Śikhivāsa, Savaidūrya, Kapila, and Gandhamādana, with Jānudhi at their head, are likewise the Kesarācalas to the west.
Adjacent to Meru, situated in the regions beginning with Jaṭhara, are Śaṅkhakūṭa, Ṛṣabha, Haṃsa, Nāga, and other mountains.
To the north, the Kesarācalas begin with Kālañjara and others; there is a great city, fourteen thousand yojanas in extent.
Above Meru, O best of Brāhmaṇas, is said to be the city of Brahmā in the heavens; in all eight directions and intermediate quarters it is found.
There are the renowned foremost cities of Indra and the other guardians of the worlds, emanating from the feet of Viṣṇu and flooding the region of the moon.
All around the city of Brahma, the Ganga fell from the sky; there, having fallen, she divided herself into four directions.
Sita, Alakananda, Caksus, and Bhadra—these are their names in order; first, Sita, moving through the sky, goes from mountain to mountain.
Then, by the eastern region, Bhadra goes to the ocean of Sarnava; likewise, Alakananda, by the southern way, reaches the land of Bharata.
Becoming sevenfold, she proceeds to the ocean, O best of twice-born; and Caksus, crossing the western mountains, then all the rest.
She reaches the western ocean, following the land called Ketumala; Bhadra, in turn, crosses the northern mountains and the northern Kurus.
Crossing the northern ocean, she arrives there, O best of twice-born; the twin ranges of Anila and Nisadha, and Malyavat and Gandhamadana.
Between these two lies Meru, shaped like a lotus stalk; the lands of Bharata, Ketumala, Bhadrashva, and also the Kurus.
The leaves of the world-mountain are outside the boundary mountains; Jathara and Devakuta are both boundary mountains.
These two, Anila and Nisadha, are situated to the south and north; Gandhamadana and Kailasa are to the east and west, respectively.
Eighty yojanas in length, they are set within the ocean; Nisadha and Pariyatra are both boundary mountains.
These two, Anila and Nisadha, are situated to the south and north; on the western side of Meru, they stand just as in the east.
Trisringa and Jarudhi are the northern mountains of the regions; these two, extending east and west, are set within the ocean.
Thus, O twice-born, I have described the boundary mountains situated around Meru, two by two in each of the four directions.
And those mountains called Kesara, which I have mentioned in the four directions of Meru, beginning with Shita, O twice-born, are exceedingly delightful.
The inner valleys of these mountains, frequented by Siddhas and Caranas, are most charming, and within them are ancient forests as well.
O best of sages, in those places are the foremost shrines of Lakshmi, Vishnu, Agni, Surya, Indra, and the gods, adorned by humans and Kinnaras.
Gandharvas, Yakshas, Rakshasas, as well as Daityas and Danavas, play day and night in those delightful mountain valleys.
Indeed, these are remembered as earthly heavens, the abodes of the righteous, O twice-born; evil-doers do not reach them, even in a hundred births.
In Bhadrāśva, the blessed Viṣṇu abides as Hayagrīva, O twice-born; in Ketumāla, he is the Boar; in Bhārata, he takes the form of the Tortoise.
Govinda dwells among the Kurus in the form of the Fish, eternal; Hari, the Lord of all, is present everywhere in his universal form.
He is the foundation of all, O twice-born, and pervades everything; as for the eight regions, beginning with Kiṃpuruṣa, O best of the twice-born—
In those regions, there is no sorrow, no fatigue, no distress, nor fear of hunger; the people are well, free from trouble, and untouched by all suffering.
