एवम् अव्यक्तविषयं मोक्षम् आहुर् मनीषिणः पञ्चविंशतिमो यो ऽयं ज्ञानाद् एव प्रवर्तते
Thus, the wise declare liberation as pertaining to the unmanifest; this twenty-fifth arises only through knowledge.
एवम् अप्रतिबुद्धत्वाद् अबुद्धम् अनुवर्तते देहाद् देहसहस्राणि तथा च न स भिद्यते
Thus, due to lack of awakening, he follows the unknowing; from body to thousands of bodies, yet he is not divided.
तिर्यग्योनिसहस्रेषु कदाचिद् देवतास्व् अपि उत्पद्यति तपोयोगाद् गुणैः सह गुणक्षयात्
Among thousands of animal births, sometimes one is born even among the gods, through ascetic practice and union with qualities; but with the decline of those qualities, one falls again.
मनुष्यत्वाद् दिवं याति देवो मानुष्यम् एति च मानुष्यान् निरयस्थानम् आलयं प्रतिपद्यते
From human birth one attains heaven, and a god is born as a human; from humanity one goes to the realm of hell, entering that abode.
कोषकारो यथात्मानं कीटः समभिरुन्धति सूत्रतन्तुगुणैर् नित्यं तथायम् अगुणो गुणैः
Just as a silkworm encloses itself with threads it has spun, so too does this quality-less self become bound by qualities.
द्वंद्वम् एति च निर्द्वंद्वस् तासु तास्व् इह योनिषु शीर्षरोगे ऽक्षिरोगे च दन्तशूले गलग्रहे
He experiences dualities and freedom from duality in these various wombs here—diseases of the head, diseases of the eyes, toothache, and throat affliction.
जलोदरे ऽतिसारे च गण्डमालाविचर्चिके श्वित्रकुष्ठे ऽग्निदग्धे च सिध्मापस्मारयोर् अपि
Dropsy, diarrhea, glandular swelling, skin eruptions, leucoderma, leprosy, burns by fire, scurf, and epilepsy as well.
यानि चान्यानि द्वंद्वानि प्राकृतानि शरीरिणाम् उत्पद्यन्ते विचित्राणि तान्य् एवात्माभिमन्यते
And whatever other natural dualities arise in embodied beings, all these various conditions the self identifies as its own.
अभिमानातिमानानां तथैव सुकृतान्य् अपि एकवासाश् चतुर्वासाः शायी नित्यम् अधस् तथा
Because of pride and arrogance, even good deeds are performed; wearing a single garment or four garments, lying always below as well.
मण्डूकशायी च तथा वीरासनगतस् तथा वीरम् आसनम् आकाशे तथा शयनम् एव च
Lying like a frog, sitting in the heroic posture, heroic seat in the sky, and likewise lying in the same way.
इष्टकाप्रस्तरे चैव चक्रकप्रस्तरे तथा भस्मप्रस्तरशायी च भूमिशय्यानुलेपनः
On a bed of bricks, on a bed of wheels, lying on a bed of ashes, or anointed with earth as a bed.
वीरस्थानाम्बुपाके च शयनं फलकेषु च विविधासु च शय्यासु फलगृह्यान्वितासु च
In the heroic place, in water-cooking, lying on planks, and on various beds furnished with fruits.
उद्याने खललग्ने तु क्षौमकृष्णाजिनान्वितः मणिवालपरीधानो व्याघ्रचर्मपरिच्छदः
In a garden, attached to a threshing floor, adorned with linen or black antelope skin, wearing a jewel-studded garment, or furnished with tiger skin.
सिंहचर्मपरीधानः पट्टवासास् तथैव च फलकं परिधानश् च तथा कटकवस्त्रधृक्
Clad in lion skin, or silk garments as well, wearing a board as clothing, or a girdle-cloth.
कटैकवसनश् चैव चीरवासास् तथैव च वस्त्राणि चान्यानि बहून्य् अभिमत्य च बुद्धिमान्
Wearing only a girdle, or bark garments likewise, and many other clothes, chosen according to his preference, being wise.
भोजनानि विचित्राणि रत्नानि विविधानि च एकरात्रान्तराशित्वम् एककालिकभोजनम्
Various foods, various jewels, eating only after an interval of one night, or eating only once a day.
चतुर्थाष्टमकालं च षष्ठकालिकम् एव च षड्रात्रभोजनश् चैव तथा चाष्टाहभोजनः
Eating at the fourth or eighth part of the day, or at the sixth part, eating once in six nights, or eating once in eight days.
मासोपवासी मूलाशी फलाहारस् तथैव च वायुभक्षश् च पिण्याकदधिगोमयभोजनः
Fasting for a month, eating roots, subsisting on fruits, living on air, or eating oil-cake, curd, or cow dung.
गोमूत्रभोजनश् चैव काशपुष्पाशनस् तथा शैवालभोजनश् चैव तथा चान्येन वर्तयन्
Eating cow urine, or feeding on reeds and flowers, eating wild greens, or living by other means.
वर्तयञ् शीर्णपर्णैश् च प्रकीर्णफलभोजनः विविधानि च कृच्छ्राणि सेवते सिद्धिकाङ्क्षया
Living on dried leaves, eating scattered fruits, he undertakes various difficult practices, desiring success.
चान्द्रायणानि विधिवल् लिङ्गानि विविधानि च चातुराश्रम्ययुक्तानि धर्माधर्माश्रयाण्य् अपि
The rites of the Cāndrāyaṇa and various other observances, as well as the diverse symbols, all connected with the four stages of life, are indeed based on righteousness and unrighteousness.
उपाश्रयान् अप्य् अपरान् पाखण्डान् विविधान् अपि विविक्ताश् च शिलाछायास् तथा प्रस्रवणानि च
There are also other refuges, and many heretical paths, as well as solitary places, the shade of rocks, and likewise springs.
पुलिनानि विविक्तानि विविधानि वनानि च काननेषु विविक्ताश् च शैलानां महतीर् गुहाः
There are solitary riverbanks, various forests, and in the groves, the great caves of mountains, set apart.
नियमान् विविधांश् चापि विविधानि तपांसि च यज्ञांश् च विविधाकारान् विद्याश् च विविधास् तथा
There are also various disciplines, many forms of austerity, diverse sacrifices, and likewise manifold branches of knowledge.
वणिक्पथं द्विजक्षत्रवैश्यशूद्रांस् तथैव च दानं च विविधाकारं दीनान्धकृपणादिषु
The path of trade, and the four classes—Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras—as well as the various forms of giving to the poor, the blind, and the destitute.

जन्ममृत्युविधानेन तथा विशसनेन च शुभाशुभभयं सर्वम् एतद् आहुः सनातनम्
By the arrangement of birth and death, and by punishment as well, all auspicious and inauspicious fear—this, they say, is eternal.
प्रकृतिः कुरुते देवी भयं प्रलयम् एव च दिवसान्ते गुणान् एतान् अतीत्यैको ऽवतिष्ठते
Prakriti, the goddess, brings about fear and dissolution; at the end of the day, transcending these qualities, the One alone remains.
