And when that is dissolved, becoming entirely air, and the subtle form of light is destroyed, then the fire, having fulfilled its form, is extinguished.
Then the light is extinguished, and the great wind stirs; in that darkness, when the world is established in wind, the fire ceases.
Then, upon reaching dissolution, the wind-born principle of self moves upward and across, the wind stirs in all ten directions.
The quality of wind, which is touch, is then absorbed by space; then, the wind is extinguished, and space remains uncovered.
Formless, tasteless, touchless, scentless, and without shape, that great expanse fills everything and shines forth.
That space, perfectly round and characterized by sound, is nothing but sound itself, and thus space pervades and remains everywhere.
Then, the principle of sound is again absorbed by the primordial element; when the elements and senses are simultaneously established in the primordial element.
This primordial element, characterized by ego and darkness, is known as the source of the elements; the great intellect, discerning, absorbs even the primordial element.
Earth and the great principle exist at the end of the world, both within and without; thus, the seven principles and the great intellect, in order, are the primal natures.
By reabsorption, all these enter into one another; by which all this is enveloped, the cosmic egg dissolves into the waters.
Up to the boundary of the seven continents and oceans, with the seven worlds and mountains, there is a watery enclosure; this is consumed by fire.
Fire merges into wind, wind merges into space, and space is absorbed by the primordial element, and so too is the great principle.
The great principle, along with these, is absorbed by Prakriti, O twice-born; the equilibrium of the qualities, neither excessive nor deficient, O best of the twice-born.
Prakriti is declared the cause, the chief, the supreme source; this Prakriti is all, possessing both manifest and unmanifest forms.
O Brahmins, in the unmanifest, the manifest form dissolves; only the pure, imperishable, eternal, all-pervading One remains.
That too is a portion of the Supreme Self, O foremost twice-born; all distinctions such as name and species vanish there.
In what is to be known as pure existence, in the Self of knowledge, the Supreme Self abides; that is Brahman, the supreme abode, the Supreme Soul, the Supreme Lord.
He is Vishnu, all this indeed; from Him there is no return. The nature I have described, manifest and unmanifest in form.
Both nature and the person are dissolved in the Supreme Self; the Supreme Self is the foundation of all, the Supreme Lord.
He is sung in the Vedas and in the Vedanta by the name Vishnu; both active and inactive Vedic actions are of two kinds.
By both kinds, by persons, the form of sacrifice is worshipped; by the paths of Rig, Yajur, and Sama, by active rites, He is indeed worshipped.
The Lord of sacrifice, the person of sacrifice, the supreme person is worshipped by persons; the Self of knowledge, by the yoga of knowledge, the form of knowledge is worshipped.
By the paths of yoga that are inactive, Vishnu grants the fruit of liberation; whatever is spoken, whether short, long, or drawn out, about any thing.
And whatever is beyond the reach of words, all that is the imperishable Vishnu; He is manifest, He is unmanifest, He is the imperishable person.
The Supreme Self, the Self of the universe, Hari who bears the form of the universe; in Him, nature composed of manifest and unmanifest is dissolved.
And the person too, O Brahmins, who is in the unmanifest Self, the time called 'two parardhas' which I have described, O twice-born.
That day of Vishnu, O best of Brahmins, is spoken of as the Lord's; when nature is dissolved in the manifest, and likewise in the person.
When established there, the night of Him is of the same measure, O ascetics; neither day nor night exists for the eternal Supreme Self.
Yet by convention, this is spoken of as belonging to the Lord; thus, O best of sages, the dissolution of nature has been described.
O Brahmins, knowing the threefold suffering, one who is wise, having attained knowledge and detachment, reaches the ultimate dissolution.
