O best of twice-born, when the abode of the Seven Sages is reached and water stands everywhere, then this entire threefold world becomes a single ocean.
Then, O Brahmins, the wind arising from Vishnu's exhalation drives away those clouds over the course of more than a hundred years.
The Lord, who is the source and sustainer of all beings, inconceivable, the origin and beginningless one of the universe, after having completely consumed the wind,
Then, in that single ocean, the Lord, assuming the form of Brahma, rests upon the serpent-bed, Hari, the originator, lies there.
He is praised by the Siddhas dwelling in Janaloka, beginning with Sanaka, and contemplated by those seeking liberation who reside in Brahmaloka.
Assuming the divine sleep of yoga, composed of his own maya, the Supreme Lord contemplates himself as Vāsudeva.
O foremost of Brahmins, this is called the occasional dissolution, and its cause is that Hari, bearing the form of Brahma, lies thus.
When the All-Self awakens, then the world acts; when he reclines on the bed of maya, O infallible one, all this entirely dissolves.
The day of the Lotus-born, which is as long as a thousand fourfold ages, is matched by a night of equal length when the world is made into a single ocean.
Then, at the end of the night, the Unborn, taking the form of Brahma, Vishnu, as previously described to you, again creates the world.
Thus this is the dissolution of a kalpa, the intermediate dissolution, O twice-born; the occasional one has been described to you—now hear of the supreme, natural dissolution.
When, through drought, fire, and the like, the bed is properly prepared, O Brahmins, in all the worlds and in all the nether regions,
When, due to the particular transformation of the Mahat and so on, that dissolution occurs, and, caused by Krishna's will, the reabsorption begins,
First, the waters consume the earth's qualities such as scent; having absorbed the scent, the earth is then prepared for dissolution.
When the subtle element of scent is destroyed, the earth becomes of the nature of water; then the waters, set in motion, rush forth with great sound.
Filling and pervading everything, they remain and move about; with their waves, the waters encompass Lokāloka on every side.
The quality of water, when consumed by fire, is lost; the waters, being intensely heated, perish due to the exhaustion of their essence.
Then, the waters, whose essence is like nectar, truly attain the state of fire, for when enveloped on all sides by fire, they become fiery in nature.
That fire, pervading everywhere, then absorbs all that water; as it fills everything, this entire world is gradually enveloped.
When that fire spreads with its flames in all directions—across, above, and below—then air consumes the supreme form of light, which is radiant.
And when that is dissolved, becoming entirely air, and the subtle form of light is destroyed, then the fire, having fulfilled its form, is extinguished.
Then the light is extinguished, and the great wind stirs; in that darkness, when the world is established in wind, the fire ceases.
Then, upon reaching dissolution, the wind-born principle of self moves upward and across, the wind stirs in all ten directions.
The quality of wind, which is touch, is then absorbed by space; then, the wind is extinguished, and space remains uncovered.
Formless, tasteless, touchless, scentless, and without shape, that great expanse fills everything and shines forth.
That space, perfectly round and characterized by sound, is nothing but sound itself, and thus space pervades and remains everywhere.
Then, the principle of sound is again absorbed by the primordial element; when the elements and senses are simultaneously established in the primordial element.
This primordial element, characterized by ego and darkness, is known as the source of the elements; the great intellect, discerning, absorbs even the primordial element.
Earth and the great principle exist at the end of the world, both within and without; thus, the seven principles and the great intellect, in order, are the primal natures.
By reabsorption, all these enter into one another; by which all this is enveloped, the cosmic egg dissolves into the waters.
