For all beings, there are three kinds of dissolution: occasional, natural, and absolute, as taught.
Among them, the Brahma dissolution is occasional, occurring at the end of a kalpa; the absolute is liberation, and the natural is of two parardhas.
O Blessed One, declare the number of a parārdha as it is stated; the dissolution of the elements is to be understood as twice that measure.
From one station to the next, O twice-born, each is counted as ten times the previous; thus, in the eighteenth division, it is called a parārdha.
That which is twice a parārdha is the great dissolution of the elements, O twice-born; then, when the unmanifest prevails, all that is manifest merges into it along with its cause.
A human blink, measured precisely, is the unit; fifteen of these make a kāṣṭhā, and thirty kāṣṭhās make a kalā.
A nāḍikā is measured as fifteen kalās; by the measure of water, it is said to be twelve and a half palas.
A vessel pierced with four gold beans, each four aṅgulas in size, by the Māgadha standard, is known as a water prastha.
O best of twice-born, two nāḍikās make a muhūrta; thirty muhūrtas make a day and night, and a month consists of such days.
Twelve months make a year, and a day and night in heaven is equal to three hundred years of the enemies of the gods.
By those twelve thousand years, a caturyuga is declared; a thousand caturyugas is said to be a day of Brahmā.
That is a kalpa, in which there are fourteen Manus, O best of Brahmins; at its end, O sages, occurs the dissolution caused by Brahmā.
Hear from me, O foremost of twice-born, the exceedingly fierce nature of that dissolution; after this, I will further describe the dissolution of the elements.
At the end of a thousand caturyugas, when the earth is nearly depleted, there arises a most terrible drought lasting a hundred years.
Then, O best of sages, all beings with little strength, especially those of the earth, perish due to extreme suffering.
Then that Blessed One, Kṛṣṇa, in the form of Rudra and imperishable, strives to bring about the destruction of all beings established in himself.
Then that Blessed Viṣṇu, abiding in the seven rays of the sun, drinks up all the waters, O best of sages.
Having drunk all the waters found in living beings, O Brahmins, he brings about the drying up of the entire surface of the earth.
He causes the destruction of all the oceans, rivers, mountains, mountain springs, and all the water that is in the netherworlds.
Then, due to the absence of that water, seven suns with a thousand rays each arise there, nourished by the lack of moisture.
Then, both below and above, those blazing ones appear—seven suns, O twice-born, burning completely the three worlds together with the realms of Pātāla.
As the three worlds are scorched by those radiant suns, with their mountains, cities, and oceans, all moisture disappears and dryness prevails.
Then, O twice-born, the entire three worlds, with their trees and waters consumed, become a land resembling the form of a tortoise's back.
Afterwards, that Rudra, the fire of time, the destroyer of creation, burns the realms of Pātāla below, inflamed by the breath of the serpent Śeṣa.
Having burned all the regions of Pātāla, that great blazing one approaches the earth and scorches its entire surface.
Then, that fierce mass of flames, swirling violently, consumes all the earthly realms and even the heavenly worlds.
At that time, the entire three worlds appear like a heap of embers, surrounded by whirlwinds of flames, their strength exhausted.
Then, O twice-born, the inhabitants of the two worlds, overwhelmed by heat and deprived of space, proceed to the Maharloka.
From there, those beings, scorched by even greater heat, move on to Janaloka, seeking refuge in the higher realms.
Then, having burned all creation, Janārdana in the form of Rudra produces clouds from his breath, O best of sages.
