सोमात् सङ्गानुकर्षाणां ध्वजिनां सवरूथिनाम् रथानां मेघघोषाणां सहस्राणि दशैव तु
From Soma, ten thousand armies with standards and chariots, with troops and elephants, resounding like thunderclouds.
रौप्यकाञ्चनकक्षाणां सहस्राण्य् एकविंशतिः तावत्य् एव सहस्राणि उत्तरस्यां तथा दिशि
Twenty-one thousand with silver and gold armor, just as many thousands also in the northern direction.
आभूमिपाला भोजास् तु सन्ति ज्याकिङ्किणीकिनः आहुः किं चाप्य् अवन्तिभ्यः स्वसारं ददुर् अन्धकाः
The Bhojas, protectors of the earth, are skilled in the use of bows and jingling girdles; it is said that the Andhakas also gave their sister to the Avantis.
आहुकस्य तु काश्यायां द्वौ पुत्रौ संबभूवतुः देवकश् चोग्रसेनश् च देवगर्भसमाव् उभौ
To Āhuka and Kāśyā, two sons were born: Devaka and Ugrasena, both filled with divine power.
देवकस्याभवन् पुत्राश् चत्वारस् त्रिदशोपमाः देववान् उपदेवश् च संदेवो देवरक्षितः
Devaka had four sons, equal to the gods: Devavan, Upadeva, Samdeva, and Devarakshita.
कुमार्यः सप्त चास्याथ वसुदेवाय ता ददौ देवकी शान्तिदेवा च सुदेवा देवरक्षिता
And Devaki had seven daughters, whom she gave to Vasudeva: Shantideva, Sudeva, Devarakshita,
वृकदेव्य् उपदेवी च सुनाम्नी चैव सप्तमी नवोग्रसेनस्य सुतास् तेषां कंसस् तु पूर्वजः
Vrikadevi, Upadevi, Sunamni, and the seventh, Navogra—these were the daughters of Ugrasena; among them, Kamsa was the eldest.
न्यग्रोधश् च सुनामा च तथा कङ्कः सुभूषणः राष्ट्रपालो ऽथ सुतनुर् अनावृष्टिस् तु पुष्टिमान्
Nyagrodha, Sunama, Kanka, Subhushana, Rashtrapala, Sutanur, Anavrishti, and Pushtiman—
तेषां स्वसारः पञ्चासन् कंसा कंसवती तथा सुतनू राष्ट्रपाली च कङ्का चैव वराङ्गना
Their sisters were five: Kamsa, Kamsavati, Sutanū, Rashtrapali, and Kanka, all women of noble qualities.
उग्रसेनः सहापत्यो व्याख्यातः कुकुरोद्भवः कुकुराणाम् इमं वंशं धारयन्न् अमितौजसाम्
Ugrasena, along with his sons, has been described; born of the Kukura lineage, he upholds this dynasty of the mighty Kukuras.
आत्मनो विपुलं वंशं प्रजावान् आप्नुयान् नरः
A man who possesses many descendants attains a vast lineage.
भजमानस्य पुत्रो ऽथ रथमुख्यो विदूरथः राजाधिदेवः शूरस् तु विदूरथसुतो ऽभवत्
The son of Bhajamana was Rathamukhya; Viduratha was his son. Rajadhideva was a king, and Shura was the son of Viduratha.
राजाधिदेवस्य सुता जज्ञिरे वीर्यवत्तराः दत्तातिदत्तौ बलिनौ शोणाश्वः श्वेतवाहनः
Rajadhideva had sons born, powerful and strong: Dattātidatta, Shonashva, and Shvetavahana.
शमी च दण्डशर्मा च दन्तशत्रुश् च शत्रुजित् श्रवणा च श्रविष्ठा च स्वसारौ संबभूवतुः
Shami, Dandasharma, Dantashatru, Shatrujit, Shravanā, and Shraviṣṭhā—these two were sisters.
शमिपुत्रः प्रतिक्षत्रः प्रतिक्षत्रस्य चात्मजः स्वयंभोजः स्वयंभोजाद् भदिकः संबभूव ह
Shami's son was Pratikshatra, and Pratikshatra's son was Swayambhoja; from Swayambhoja came Bhadika.
तस्य पुत्रा बभूवुर् हि सर्वे भीमपराक्रमाः कृतवर्माग्रजस् तेषां शतधन्वा तु मध्यमः
His sons were all of great valor: Kritavarma was the eldest among them, Shatadhanva was the middle one.
देवान्तश् च नरान्तश् च भिषग्वैतरणश् च यः सुदान्तश् चातिदान्तश् च निकाश्यः कामदम्भकः
Devanta, Naranta, Bhishagvaitarana, Sudanta, Atidanta, Nikashya, and Kamadambhaka—
देवान्तस्याभवत् पुत्रो विद्वान् कम्बलबर्हिषः असमौजाः सुतस् तस्य नासमौजाश् च ताव् उभौ
Devanta's son was the wise Kambalabarhisha; Asamauja was his son, and Nasamauja was also his son—both.
अजातपुत्राय सुतान् प्रददाव् असमौजसे सुदंष्ट्रश् च सुचारुश् च कृष्ण इत्य् अन्धकाः स्मृताः
To Asamauja, who had no sons, sons were given: Sudaṃshtra, Sucharu, and Krishna—these are known as the Andhakas.
गान्धारी चैव माद्री च क्रोष्टुभार्ये बभूवतुः गान्धारी जनयाम् आस अनमित्रं महाबलम्
Gandhari and Madri became the wives of Kroshṭu; Gandhari gave birth to Anamitra, who was greatly powerful.
माद्री युधाजितं पुत्रं ततो वै देवमीधुषम् अनमित्रम् अमित्राणां जेतारम् अपराजितम्
Madri bore the son Yudhajit, and then Devamidhuṣa; Anamitra was the unconquered victor of enemies.
अनमित्रसुतो निघ्नो निघ्नतो द्वौ बभूवतुः प्रसेनश् चाथ सत्राजिच् छत्रुसेनाजिताव् उभौ
Anamitra's son was Nighna; Nighna had two sons: Prasena and Satrajit, both conquerors of enemies.
प्रसेनो द्वारवत्यां तु निवसन् यो महामणिम् दिव्यं स्यमन्तकं नाम स सूर्याद् उपलब्धवान्
Prasena, residing in Dvaravati, obtained from the Sun the divine Syamantaka jewel, a great gem.
तस्य सत्राजितः सूर्यः सखा प्राणसमो ऽभवत् स कदाचिन् निशापाये रथेन रथिनां वरः
Satrajit, whose friend and very life was the Sun, once, at the end of night, the best of charioteers, set out in his chariot.
तोयकूलम् अपः स्प्रष्टुम् उपस्थातुं ययौ रविम् तस्योपतिष्ठतः सूर्यं विवस्वान् अग्रतः स्थितः
He went to the riverbank to touch the water, and as he approached, Vivasvan, the Sun, stood before him.
विस्पष्टमूर्तिर् भगवांस् तेजोमण्डलवान् विभुः अथ राजा विवस्वन्तम् उवाच स्थितम् अग्रतः
The Blessed Lord, radiant and surrounded by a circle of light, appeared clearly; then the king spoke to Vivasvan, standing before him.
यथैव व्योम्नि पश्यामि सदा त्वां ज्योतिषां पते तेजोमण्डलिनं देवं तथैव पुरतः स्थितम्
"Just as I always see you in the sky, O Lord of lights, shining with a circle of radiance, so now I see you standing before me."
को विशेषो ऽस्ति मे त्वत्तः सख्येनोपगतस्य वै एतच् छ्रुत्वा तु भगवान् मणिरत्नं स्यमन्तकम्
"What difference is there for me, who has approached you in friendship?" Hearing this, the Blessed Lord took the Syamantaka gem.
स्वकण्ठाद् अवमुच्याथ एकान्ते न्यस्तवान् विभुः ततो विग्रहवन्तं तं ददर्श नृपतिस् तदा
Then, removing the Syamantaka jewel from his own neck, the mighty one set it aside in a secluded place; and the king then saw him in bodily form.
प्रीतिमान् अथ तं दृष्ट्वा मुहूर्तं कृतवान् कथाम् तम् अभिप्रस्थितं भूयो विवस्वन्तं स सत्रजित्
Seeing him, the king was pleased and conversed with him for a while; as Vivasvan was about to depart, Satrajit again addressed him.
