After touching or conversing, one becomes purified by gazing at the sun; having looked, one should likewise purify after touching water-carriers or abandoned corpses.
Those who act against dharma, women in childbirth, eunuchs, those naked or involved in funerals, those who carry out the dead, and those who enjoy others' wives—
This alone should be done by the wise for self-purification: after touching food unfit for eating, beggars, impostors, cats, donkeys, and roosters—
And after touching outcastes, those abandoned, Chandalas, corpse-bearers, the knower of dharma becomes purified by bathing, as well as after touching water-carriers, village pigs.
Likewise, after touching men defiled by childbirth impurity, and in whose house daily rites are continually lost—
And one who is abandoned by Brahmins, eats impure food, and is the lowest of men, should never cause the loss of daily rites.
I will now declare the omission of rites only in cases of death or birth: a Brahmin should remain for ten days, abstaining from giving and offering.
A Kshatriya for twelve days, a Vaishya for half a month, and a Shudra for a month should sit, abstaining from their own duties.
Afterwards, all should perform their own duties as appropriate; water should be offered to the departed, going outside with relatives.
On the first, fourth, seventh, and ninth days, the collection of bones should be performed by relatives on the fourth day.
After the collection (of the bones), the touching of the body is prescribed; all the rites by the relatives should be performed after the collection.
On the day of death, mere contact applies to those of the same lineage; similarly, by intention, in the case of weapons, rope-binding, or fire.
Even in cases of death by poison, heat, and the like, or when the body is lost, or for a child, or one who is abroad, or for a renunciant who has died, the same applies.
For humans, immediate impurity is prescribed; for others, impurity lasts three days. If another of the same lineage dies during this period, the impurity is renewed.
The previous impurity has been described; the daily rites should be performed during that time. This same rule is observed even at birth.
For those of the same lineage, and for those who share water, the proper rites are to be performed. When a son is born, the father should bathe with his clothes on.
If, in that case, another follows in death, then the purification is said to occur after the days prescribed for the previous death.
After ten, twelve, or half a month has passed, all the castes should perform their respective rites according to rule.
After the funeral, the ekoddiṣṭa (single-offering) rite should be performed; and gifts should be given to learned Brahmins.
Whatever is most cherished in the world, and whatever was dear to the deceased at home, that should be given to a worthy person by one who desires imperishable merit.
After the full days have passed, having touched water, vehicles, and weapons, and having offered rice-balls for the departed, all castes, having performed the rites, are purified.
They should act in full purity, for the benefit of this world and the next; the three Vedas should always be studied, and the wise should act accordingly.
Wealth should be acquired righteously, and sacrifices performed with care, so that the self, O twice-born, does not incur reproach.
One should do, without hesitation, that which need not be concealed from great people; thus acting, O Brahmins, while living in the house.
Having attained righteousness, wealth, and desire, both here and hereafter, this secret is auspicious, life-giving, blessed, and increases wisdom.
It destroys all sins, is meritorious, grants prosperity, nourishment, health, and auspiciousness; it bestows fame and glory on people, and increases brilliance and strength.
It should always be practiced by men as the highest means to heaven, O best of sages, by Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras.
It should be thoroughly learned with great effort by those who desire supreme good; and having known it, whoever always performs it at the proper time—
Freed from all sin, one is honored in the heavenly realm; this has been declared, and it is the most excellent among the excellent, O best of twice-born.
The dharma spoken in the Vedas and Smritis should not be given to just anyone; it should not be given to an atheist, nor to one with a wicked mind, O twice-born; nor to a hypocrite, a fool, or one who speaks false arguments.
