रथ्यागमनविज्ञानं दासवर्गेण संस्कृतम् प्राक्प्रशस्तं चिरातीतम् अनेकान्तरितं लघु
Objects that have been on the street, recognized by servants, previously praised, long unused, or separated by many intervals, are easily purified.
अन्तः प्रभूतं बालं च वृद्धान्तरविचेष्टितम् कर्मान्तागारशालाश् च स्तनद्वयं शुचि स्त्रियाः
Objects that have been much handled inside, touched by children, by the elderly, or moved about, as well as workrooms and kitchens, and a woman's two breasts, are pure.
शुचयश् च तथैवापः स्रवन्त्यो गन्धवर्जिताः भूमिर् विशुध्यते कालाद् दाहमार्जनगोकुलैः
Pure water, especially that which flows and is free from odor, is always pure; the earth becomes pure over time, by burning, sweeping, or by cows.
लेपाद् उल्लेखनात् सेकाद् वेश्म संमार्जनादिना केशकीटावपन्ने च गोघ्राते मक्षिकान्विते
By smearing, scraping, sprinkling, and sweeping the house, as well as when hair or insects fall, or when there is a cow's odor or presence of flies, purification is achieved.
मृदम्बु भस्म चाप्य् अन्ने प्रक्षेप्तव्यं विशुद्धये औदुम्बराणाम् अम्लेन वारिणा त्रपुसीसयोः
Earth, water, and ashes should be sprinkled on food for purification; wooden vessels are purified with sour water, and tin or lead vessels likewise.
भस्माम्बुभिश् च कांस्यानां शुद्धिः प्लावो द्रवस्य च अमेध्याक्तस्य मृत्तोयैर् गन्धापहरणेन च
Bronze vessels are purified with ashes and water; liquids by filtering; and earthen vessels smeared with impurity are purified by washing with water and removing odor.
अन्येषां चैव द्रव्याणां वर्णगन्धांश् च हारयेत् शुचि मांसं तु चाण्डालक्रव्यादैर् विनिपातितम्
For other substances, their color and odor should be removed; meat that has fallen due to outcastes or hunters is considered pure.
रथ्यागतं च तैलादि शुचि गोतृप्तिदं पयः रजो ऽग्निर् अश्वगोछाया रश्मयः पवनो मही
Oil and similar substances found on the street, milk that satisfies cows, dust, fire, the shadow of a horse, sunlight, wind, and earth are pure.
विप्लुषो मक्षिकाद्याश् च दुष्टसङ्गाद् अदोषिणः अजाश्वं मुखतो मेध्यं न गोर् वत्सस्य चाननम्
Flies and similar insects, though touching impure things, are not themselves impure; the mouth of a goat or horse is pure, but not the mouth of a cow's calf.
मातुः प्रस्रवणे मेध्यं शकुनिः फलपातने आसनं शयनं यानं तटौ नद्यास् तृणानि च
The mother's milk at the time of flowing is pure; a bird when dropping fruit is pure; seats, beds, vehicles, and grass on the riverbank are pure.
सोमसूर्यांशुपवनैः शुध्यन्ते तानि पण्यवत् रथ्यापसर्पणे स्नाने क्षुत्पानानां च कर्मसु
These are purified by the rays of the moon, sun, and wind, just like merchandise; also by moving aside on the road, by bathing, and by acts such as sneezing or drinking.
आचामेत यथान्यायं वाससः परिधापने स्पृष्टानाम् अथ संस्पर्शैर् द्विरथ्याकर्दमाम्भसि
One should perform ācāmanam as prescribed when putting on garments, and after touching or being touched by others, or after stepping into muddy water on a double road.
पक्वेष्टकचितानां च मेध्यता वायुसंश्रयात् प्रभूतोपहताद् अन्नाद् अग्रम् उद्धृत्य संत्यजेत्
From food that has been affected by excessive air or has been spoiled, and from the top portion of cooked bricks, one should remove and discard the part that is impure.
शेषस्य प्रोक्षणं कुर्याद् आचम्याद्भिस् तथा मृदा उपवासस् त्रिरात्रं तु दुष्टभक्ताशिनो भवेत्
One should sprinkle water over the remnants, using water and clay after sipping, and if one has eaten spoiled food, a three-night fast should be observed.
अज्ञाने ज्ञानपूर्वे तु तद्दोषोपशमे न तु उदक्यां वावलग्नां च सूतिकान्त्यावसायिनः
If the fault occurred unknowingly but was preceded by knowledge, its remedy is permitted; but not for those who are water-carriers, recently delivered women, or those involved in funerals.
स्पृष्ट्वा स्नायीत शौचार्थं तथैव मृतहारिणः नारं स्पृष्ट्वास्थि सस्नेहं स्नात्वा विप्रो विशुध्यति
After touching, one should bathe for the sake of purity; likewise, after carrying the dead. If a Brahmin touches a bone with marrow, he becomes purified by bathing.
आचम्यैव तु निःस्नेहं गाम् आलभ्यार्कम् ईक्ष्य वा न लङ्घयेत् तथैवाथ ष्ठीवनोद्वर्तनानि च
After sipping water, one may touch a cow without oil, or gaze at the sun, but should not cross over it; likewise, avoid spitting and rubbing the body.
गृहाद् उच्छिष्टविण्मूत्रं पादाम्भस् तत् क्षिपेद् बहिः पञ्चपिण्डान् अनुद्धृत्य न स्नायात् परवारिणि
One should throw out leftover food, excrement, urine, and foot-washing water from the house; without removing the five lumps, one should not bathe in another's water.
स्नायीत देवखातेषु गङ्गाह्रदसरित्सु च नोद्यानादौ विकालेषु प्राज्ञस् तिष्ठेत् कदाचन
One should bathe in sacred pits, in the Ganges, in lakes and rivers; but a wise person should never stand in gardens or at improper times.
नालपेज् जनविद्विष्टान् वीरहीनास् तथा स्त्रियः देवतापितृसच्छास्त्रयज्विसंन्यासिनिन्दकैः
One should not converse with those hated by people, those lacking valor, women, or those who revile deities, ancestors, true scriptures, sacrifices, or renunciants.
कृत्वा तु स्पर्शनालापं शुध्यत्य् अर्कावलोकनात् अवलोक्य तथोदक्यां संन्यस्तं पतितं शवम्
After touching or conversing, one becomes purified by gazing at the sun; having looked, one should likewise purify after touching water-carriers or abandoned corpses.
विधर्मिसूतिकाषण्ढविवस्त्रान्त्यावसायिनः मृतनिर्यातकांश् चैव परदाररताश् च ये
Those who act against dharma, women in childbirth, eunuchs, those naked or involved in funerals, those who carry out the dead, and those who enjoy others' wives—
एतद् एव हि कर्तव्यं प्राज्ञैः शोधनम् आत्मनः अभोज्यभिक्षुपाखण्डमार्जारखरकुक्कुटान्
This alone should be done by the wise for self-purification: after touching food unfit for eating, beggars, impostors, cats, donkeys, and roosters—
पतितापविद्धचाण्डालमृताहारांश् च धर्मवित् संस्पृश्य शुध्यते स्नानाद् उदक्याग्रामशूकरौ
And after touching outcastes, those abandoned, Chandalas, corpse-bearers, the knower of dharma becomes purified by bathing, as well as after touching water-carriers, village pigs.
तद्वच् च सूतिकाशौचदूषितौ पुरुषाव् अपि यस्य चानुदिनं हानिर् गृहे नित्यस्य कर्मणः
Likewise, after touching men defiled by childbirth impurity, and in whose house daily rites are continually lost—
यश् च ब्राह्मणसंत्यक्तः किल्बिषाशी नराधमः नित्यस्य कर्मणो हानिं न कुर्वीत कदाचन
And one who is abandoned by Brahmins, eats impure food, and is the lowest of men, should never cause the loss of daily rites.
तस्य त्व् अकरणं वक्ष्ये केवलं मृतजन्मसु दशाहं ब्राह्मणस् तिष्ठेद् दानहोमविवर्जितः
I will now declare the omission of rites only in cases of death or birth: a Brahmin should remain for ten days, abstaining from giving and offering.
क्षत्रियो द्वादशाहं च वैश्यो मासार्धम् एव च शूद्रश् च मासम् आसीत निजकर्मविवर्जितः
A Kshatriya for twelve days, a Vaishya for half a month, and a Shudra for a month should sit, abstaining from their own duties.
ततः परं निजं कर्म कुर्युः सर्वे यथोचितम् प्रेताय सलिलं देयं बहिर् गत्वा तु गोत्रकैः
Afterwards, all should perform their own duties as appropriate; water should be offered to the departed, going outside with relatives.
प्रथमे ऽह्नि चतुर्थे च सप्तमे नवमे तथा तस्यास्थिसंचयः कार्यश् चतुर्थे ऽहनि गोत्रकैः
On the first, fourth, seventh, and ninth days, the collection of bones should be performed by relatives on the fourth day.
