परिवादं न कुर्वीत परिहासं च भो द्विजाः धवलाम्बरसंवीतः सितपुष्पविभूषितः
Do not speak ill or mock, O twice-borns; be dressed in white garments and adorned with white flowers.
सदा माङ्गल्यवेषः स्यान् न वामाङ्गल्यवान् भवेत् नोद्धतोन्मत्तमूढैश् च नाविनीतैश् च पण्डितः
One should always wear auspicious attire and not be adorned with inauspicious things; the learned should not associate with arrogant, intoxicated, foolish, or ill-mannered people.
गच्छेन् मैत्रीम् अशीलेन न वयोजातिदूषितैः न चातिव्ययशीलैश् च पुरुषैर् नैव वैरिभिः
One should pursue friendship not with the immoral, nor with those corrupted by age or caste, nor with those excessively wasteful, nor with enemies.
कार्याक्षमैर् निन्दितैर् न न चैव विटसङ्गिभिः निस्वैर् न वादैकपरैर् नरैश् चान्यैस् तथाधमैः
Nor with those incapable of duty, nor with the censured, nor with those who consort with prostitutes, nor with those who are harsh, quarrelsome, or otherwise base.
सुहृद्दीक्षितभूपालस्नातकश्वशुरैः सह उत्तिष्ठेद् विभवाच् चैनान् अर्चयेद् गृहम् आगतान्
With friends, initiated kings, graduates, and fathers-in-law, one should rise from one's seat and honor them when they come to the house, according to one's means.
यथाविभवतो विप्राः प्रतिसंवत्सरोषितान् सम्यग् गृहे ऽर्चनं कृत्वा यथास्थानम् अनुक्रमात्
According to one's means, one should properly honor the Brahmins who have stayed each year in the house, in due order and place.
संपूजयेत् तथा वह्नौ प्रदद्याच् चाहुतीः क्रमात् प्रथमां ब्रह्मणे दद्यात् प्रजानां पतये ततः
One should likewise honor them at the fire, offering oblations in order: first to Brahma, then to the lord of creatures.
तृतीयां चैव गृह्येभ्यः कश्यपाय तथापराम् ततो ऽनुमतये दद्याद् दद्याद् बहुबलिं ततः
The third oblation is for the household deities, then for Kashyapa; after that, one should offer to Anumati, and then to Bahubali.
पूर्वं ख्याता मया या तु नित्यक्रमविधौ क्रिया वैश्वदेवं ततः कुर्याद् वदत शृणुत द्विजाः
The rite previously described by me in the daily sequence, after that, one should perform the Vaiśvadeva ritual; speak and listen, O twice-borns.
यथास्थानविभागं तु देवान् उद्दिश्य वै पृथक् पर्जन्यापोधरित्रीणां दद्यात् तु मणिके त्रयम्
According to their proper place and division, one should separately offer three grains for the gods, for Parjanya, for water, and for the earth.
वायवे च प्रतिदिशं दिग्भ्यः प्राच्यादिषु क्रमात् ब्रह्मणे चान्तरिक्षाय सूर्याय च यथाक्रमात्
To Vayu in each direction, in order from east onward; to Brahma, to the atmosphere, and to the sun, in due sequence.
विश्वेभ्यश् चैव देवेभ्यो विश्वभूतेभ्य एव च उषसे भूतपतये दद्याद् वोत्तरतः शुचिः
To all the gods and all beings, to Ushas and the lord of beings, one should offer, being pure, facing north.
स्वधा च नम इत्य् उक्त्वा पितृभ्यश् चैव दक्षिणे कृत्वापसव्यं वायव्यां यक्ष्मैतत् तैति संवदन्
Saying 'svadhā' and 'namas', one should offer to the ancestors facing south, making the left-hand gesture in the northwest, reciting 'yakṣmaitat taiti'.
अन्नावशेषमिश्रं वै तोयं दद्याद् यथाविधि देवानां च ततः कुर्याद् ब्राह्मणानां नमस्क्रियाम्
One should offer water mixed with leftover food to the gods as prescribed, and then perform the salutation ritual for the Brahmins.
अङ्गुष्ठोत्तरतो रेखा पाणेर् या दक्षिणस्य च एतद् ब्राह्मम् इति ख्यातं तीर्थम् आचमनाय वै
The line above the thumb on the right hand is known as the Brahma tīrtha, used for sipping water in purification.
तर्जन्यङ्गुष्ठयोर् अन्तः पित्र्यं तीर्थम् उदाहृतम् पितॄणां तेन तोयानि दद्यान् नान्दीमुखाद् ऋते
The space between the index finger and thumb is called the Pitrya tīrtha; with it, one should offer water to the ancestors, except during the Nandimukha rite.
अङ्गुल्यग्रे तथा दैवं तेन दिव्यक्रियाविधिः तीर्थं कनिष्ठिकामूले कायं तत्र प्रजापतेः
The divine ritual is performed at the tip of the finger; the sacred water is taken at the base of the little finger; the body is offered there to Prajapati.
एवम् एभिः सदा तीर्थैर् विधानं पितृभिः सह सदा कार्याणि कुर्वीत नान्यतीर्थः कदाचन
Thus, one should always perform rites together with the ancestors using these sacred waters; no other water should ever be used.
ब्राह्मेणाचमनं शस्तं पैत्र्यं पित्र्येण सर्वदा देवतीर्थेन देवानां प्राजापत्यं जितेन च
The Brahma tirtha is prescribed for sipping water; the Pitrya tirtha for ancestral rites; the Deva tirtha for the gods; and the Prajapatya tirtha for Prajapati.
नान्दीमुखानां कुर्वीत प्राज्ञः पिण्डोदकक्रियाम् प्राजापत्येन तीर्थेन यच् च किंचित् प्रजापतेः
A wise person should use the Prajapatya tirtha for the offering of balls of rice and water to the Nandimukha ancestors, and for any rite pertaining to Prajapati.
युगपज् जलम् अग्निं च बिभृयान् न विचक्षणः गुरुदेवपितॄन् विप्रान् न च पादौ प्रसारयेत्
One who is not discerning should not hold water and fire together at the same time; nor should he extend his feet toward teachers, gods, ancestors, or Brahmins.
नाचक्षीत धयन्तीं गां जलं नाञ्जलिना पिबेत् शौचकालेषु सर्वेषु गुरुष्व् अल्पेषु वा पुनः न विलम्बेत मेधावी न मुखेनानलं धमेत्
He should not look at a cow while it is urinating; nor drink water with his hands shaped as a cup; at all times of purification, whether with elders or alone, the wise should not delay, nor blow on fire with the mouth.
तत्र विप्रा न वस्तव्यं यत्र नास्ति चतुष्टयम् ऋणप्रदाता वैद्यश् च श्रोत्रियः सजला नदी
Brahmins should not dwell where the four are absent: one who gives loans, a physician, a learned Brahmin, and a river with water.
जितभृत्यो नृपो यत्र बलवान् धर्मतत्परः तत्र नित्यं वसेत् प्राज्ञः कुतः कुनृपतौ सुखम्
Where the king has mastered his servants, is strong, and devoted to righteousness, the wise should always reside; how can there be happiness under a wicked king?
पौराः सुसंहता यत्र सततं न्यायवर्तिनः शान्तामत्सरिणो लोकास् तत्र वासः सुखोदयः
Where the townspeople are united, always follow justice, and the people are peaceful and free from envy, dwelling there brings happiness.
यस्मिन् कृषीवला राष्ट्रे प्रायशो नातिमानिनः यत्रौषधान्य् अशेषाणि वसेत् तत्र विचक्षणः
Where the farmers in the land are generally not arrogant, and all medicinal plants are abundant, the discerning should reside there.
तत्र विप्रा न वस्तव्यं यत्रैतत् त्रितयं सदा जिगीषुः पूर्ववैरश् च जनश् च सततोत्सवः
Brahmins should not dwell where these three are always found: those who constantly seek conflict, old enmity, and people always engaged in festivities.
वसेन् नित्यं सुशीलेषु सहचारिषु पण्डितः यत्राप्रधृष्यो नृपतिर् यत्र सस्यप्रदा मही
A learned person should always reside among companions of good character, where the king is unassailable, and the land yields abundant crops.
इत्य् एतत् कथितं विप्रा मया वो हितकाम्यया अतःपरं प्रवक्ष्यामि भक्ष्यभोज्यविधिक्रियाम्
Thus, O Brahmins, I have spoken this for your welfare; next, I will explain the rules for what is to be eaten and enjoyed.
भोज्यम् अन्नं पर्युषितं स्नेहाक्तं चिरसंभृतम् अस्नेहा अपि गोधूमयवगोरसविक्रियाः
Food that is stale, mixed with oil, kept for a long time, as well as preparations of wheat, barley, and cow's milk without oil, are fit to be eaten.
