इष्टापूर्तायुषां हन्त्री परदारगतिर् नृणाम् नहीदृशम् अनायुष्यं लोके किंचन विद्यते
The act of approaching another's wife destroys the merit gained from sacrifices and charitable works, and shortens one's lifespan; nothing so harmful to longevity exists in this world.
यादृशं पुरुषस्येह परदाराभिमर्शनम् देवाग्निपितृकार्याणि तथा गुर्वभिवादनम्
Just as a man's contact with another's wife is significant, so too are duties toward the gods, fire, ancestors, and respectful greeting of one's teacher.
कुर्वीत सम्यग् आचम्य तद्वद् अन्नभुजिक्रियाम् अफेनशब्दगन्धाभिर् अद्भिर् अच्छाभिर् आदरात्
One should properly perform ācamana after eating, using clean water free from foam, sound, and odor, with care and respect.
आचामेच् चैव तद्वच् च प्राङ्मुखोदङ्मुखो ऽपि वा अन्तर्जलाद् आवसथाद् वल्मीकान् मूषिकास्थलात्
One should perform ācamana in the same manner, whether facing east or north, and also after coming from water, a dwelling, an anthill, or a place where mice reside.
कृतशौचावशिष्टाश् च वर्जयेत् पञ्च वै मृदः प्रक्षाल्य हस्तौ पादौ च समभ्युक्ष्य समाहितः
After cleansing, one should avoid the five types of leftover clay; after washing hands and feet thoroughly, one should remain attentive.
अन्तर्जानुस् तथाचामेत् त्रिश् चतुर् वापि वै नरः परिमृज्य द्विर् आवर्त्य खानि मूर्धानम् एव च
One should perform ācamana with water within the knees, three or four times; after cleaning, one should rub the cavities and the head twice.
सम्यग् आचम्य तोयेन क्रियां कुर्वीत वै शुचिः क्षुते ऽवलीढे वाते च तथा निष्ठीवनादिषु
Having properly performed ācamana with water, a pure person should carry out rituals, especially after sneezing, yawning, passing wind, or spitting.
कुर्याद् आचमनं स्पर्शे वास्पृष्टस्यार्कदर्शनम् कुर्वीतालम्भनं चापि दक्षिणश्रवणस्य च
One should perform ācamana after touching an impure object or seeing the sun, and also touch the right ear.
यथाविभवतो ह्य् एतत् पूर्वाभावे ततः परम् न विद्यमाने पूर्वोक्त उत्तरप्राप्तिर् इष्यते
According to one's means, this should be done; if the previous method is unavailable, the next prescribed method is accepted.
न कुर्याद् दन्तसंघर्षं नात्मनो देहताडनम् स्वापे ऽध्वनि तथा भुञ्जन् स्वाध्यायं च विवर्जयेत्
One should not grind the teeth, strike one's own body, sleep, travel, eat, or study at improper times.
संध्यायां मैथुनं चापि तथा प्रस्थानम् एव च तथापराह्णे कुर्वीत श्रद्धया पितृतर्पणम्
During the twilight, one should not engage in sexual union or depart; in the afternoon, one should perform the ancestral offering with faith.
शिरःस्नानं च कुर्वीत दैवं पित्र्यम् अथापि च प्राङ्मुखोदङ्मुखो वापि श्मश्रुकर्म च कारयेत्
One should bathe the head for divine and ancestral purposes, whether facing east or north, and also perform shaving of the beard and hair.
व्यङ्गिनीं वर्जयेत् कन्यां कुलजां वाप्य् अरोगिणीम् उद्वहेत् पितृमात्रोश् च सप्तमीं पञ्चमीं तथा
One should avoid marrying a girl who is deformed, from one's own family, or unhealthy; one may marry the seventh or fifth daughter from the father's or mother's side.
रक्षेद् दारांस् त्यजेद् ईर्ष्यां तथाह्नि स्वप्नमैथुने परोपतापकं कर्म जन्तुपीडां च सर्वदा
One should protect one's wife, abandon jealousy, avoid sleep and sexual union during the day, and always refrain from actions that harm others or cause suffering to living beings.
उदक्या सर्ववर्णानां वर्ज्या रात्रिचतुष्टयम् स्त्रीजन्मपरिहारार्थं पञ्चमीं चापि वर्जयेत्
For all castes, the woman who fetches water should be avoided for four nights; to prevent the birth of a daughter, the fifth night should also be avoided.
ततः षष्ठ्यां व्रजेद् रात्र्यां ज्येष्ठयुग्मासु रात्रिषु युग्मासु पुत्रा जायन्ते स्त्रियो ऽयुग्मासु रात्रिषु
Then, on the sixth night and on even nights in the month of Jyeshtha, sons are born; on odd nights, daughters are born.
विधर्मिणो वै पर्वादौ संध्याकालेषु षण्ढकाः क्षुरकर्मणि रिक्तां वै वर्जयीत विचक्षणः
Those who act against dharma, during festival beginnings and twilight times, as well as eunuchs, should avoid shaving on empty lunar days, according to the wise.
ब्रुवताम् अविनीतानां न श्रोतव्यं कदाचन न चोत्कृष्टासनं देयम् अनुत्कृष्टस्य चादरात्
One should never listen to the words of the disrespectful, nor give a superior seat to one who is not worthy, even out of respect.
क्षुरकर्मणि चान्ते च स्त्रीसंभोगे च भो द्विजाः स्नायीत चैलवान् प्राज्ञः कटभूमिम् उपेत्य च
O twice-borns, after shaving, at the end of sexual union, and upon entering a cremation ground, the wise should bathe while still clothed.
देववेदद्विजातीनां साधुसत्यमहात्मनाम् गुरोः पतिव्रतानां च ब्रह्मयज्ञतपस्विनाम्
For the gods, the Vedas, the twice-born, the virtuous, truthful, great-souled, for the teacher, for devoted wives, and for those who perform the Brahma sacrifice and austerities—
परिवादं न कुर्वीत परिहासं च भो द्विजाः धवलाम्बरसंवीतः सितपुष्पविभूषितः
Do not speak ill or mock, O twice-borns; be dressed in white garments and adorned with white flowers.
सदा माङ्गल्यवेषः स्यान् न वामाङ्गल्यवान् भवेत् नोद्धतोन्मत्तमूढैश् च नाविनीतैश् च पण्डितः
One should always wear auspicious attire and not be adorned with inauspicious things; the learned should not associate with arrogant, intoxicated, foolish, or ill-mannered people.
गच्छेन् मैत्रीम् अशीलेन न वयोजातिदूषितैः न चातिव्ययशीलैश् च पुरुषैर् नैव वैरिभिः
One should pursue friendship not with the immoral, nor with those corrupted by age or caste, nor with those excessively wasteful, nor with enemies.
कार्याक्षमैर् निन्दितैर् न न चैव विटसङ्गिभिः निस्वैर् न वादैकपरैर् नरैश् चान्यैस् तथाधमैः
Nor with those incapable of duty, nor with the censured, nor with those who consort with prostitutes, nor with those who are harsh, quarrelsome, or otherwise base.
सुहृद्दीक्षितभूपालस्नातकश्वशुरैः सह उत्तिष्ठेद् विभवाच् चैनान् अर्चयेद् गृहम् आगतान्
With friends, initiated kings, graduates, and fathers-in-law, one should rise from one's seat and honor them when they come to the house, according to one's means.
यथाविभवतो विप्राः प्रतिसंवत्सरोषितान् सम्यग् गृहे ऽर्चनं कृत्वा यथास्थानम् अनुक्रमात्
According to one's means, one should properly honor the Brahmins who have stayed each year in the house, in due order and place.
संपूजयेत् तथा वह्नौ प्रदद्याच् चाहुतीः क्रमात् प्रथमां ब्रह्मणे दद्यात् प्रजानां पतये ततः
One should likewise honor them at the fire, offering oblations in order: first to Brahma, then to the lord of creatures.
तृतीयां चैव गृह्येभ्यः कश्यपाय तथापराम् ततो ऽनुमतये दद्याद् दद्याद् बहुबलिं ततः
The third oblation is for the household deities, then for Kashyapa; after that, one should offer to Anumati, and then to Bahubali.
पूर्वं ख्याता मया या तु नित्यक्रमविधौ क्रिया वैश्वदेवं ततः कुर्याद् वदत शृणुत द्विजाः
The rite previously described by me in the daily sequence, after that, one should perform the Vaiśvadeva ritual; speak and listen, O twice-borns.
यथास्थानविभागं तु देवान् उद्दिश्य वै पृथक् पर्जन्यापोधरित्रीणां दद्यात् तु मणिके त्रयम्
According to their proper place and division, one should separately offer three grains for the gods, for Parjanya, for water, and for the earth.
