भिन्नासनं च शय्यां च भाजनं च विवर्जयेत् गुरूणाम् आसनं देयम् अभ्युत्थानादिसत्कृतम्
He should avoid broken seats, beds, and vessels; a teacher's seat should be offered with proper respect, including rising and other honors.
अनुकूलं तथालापम् अभिकुर्वीत बुद्धिमान् तत्रानुगमनं कुर्यात् प्रतिकूलं न संचरेत्
A wise person should speak agreeably and appropriately, follow in suitable matters, and not act contrary to his teacher.
नैकवस्त्रश् च भुञ्जीत न कुर्याद् देवतार्चनम् नावाहयेद् द्विजान् अग्नौ होमं कुर्वीत बुद्धिमान्
He should not eat with only one garment, nor perform worship of deities; he should not invite twice-born for rituals, but may perform fire offerings with discernment.
न स्नायीत नरो नग्नो न शयीत कदाचन न पाणिभ्याम् उभाभ्यां तु कण्डूयेत शिरस् तथा
A man should not bathe naked, nor ever sleep unclothed; he should not scratch his head with both hands.
न चाभीक्ष्णं शिरःस्नानं कार्यं निष्कारणं बुधैः शिरःस्नातश् च तैलेन नाङ्गं किंचिद् उपस्पृशेत्
One should not wash the head frequently without reason; after washing the head with oil, he should not touch any limb before rinsing.
अनध्यायेषु सर्वेषु स्वाध्यायं च विवर्जयेत् ब्राह्मणानलगोसूर्यान् नावमन्येत् कदाचन
On all unsuitable days, one should refrain from sacred study; he should never show disrespect to a Brahmin, fire, cow, or the sun.
उदङ्मुखो दिवा रात्राव् उत्सर्गं दक्षिणामुखः आबाधासु यथाकामं कुर्यान् मूत्रपुरीषयोः
During the day, one should face north, at night face south, when relieving oneself; in times of illness, he may do so as needed for urine and feces.
दुष्कृतं न गुरोर् ब्रूयात् क्रुद्धं चैनं प्रसादयेत् परिवादं न शृणुयाद् अन्येषाम् अपि कुर्वताम्
He should not speak of a teacher's faults, and if the teacher is angry, he should appease him; he should not listen to slander, even if others are doing so.
पन्था देयो ब्राह्मणानां राज्ञो दुःखातुरस्य च विद्याधिकस्य गर्भिण्या रोगार्तस्य महीयतः
The path should be yielded to Brahmins, kings, the distressed or suffering, those learned, pregnant women, and the sick, as well as to those of high status.
मूकान्धबधिराणां च मत्तस्योन्मत्तकस्य च देवालयं चैद्यतरुं तथैव च चतुष्पथम्
So too to the mute, blind, deaf, intoxicated, insane, to temples, sacred trees, and at crossroads.
विद्याधिकं गुरुं चैव बुधः कुर्यात् प्रदक्षिणम् उपानद्वस्त्रमाल्यादि धृतम् अन्यैर् न धारयेत्
A wise person should circumambulate a learned teacher; he should not wear shoes, garments, garlands, or the like that have been worn by others.
चतुर्दश्यां तथाष्टम्यां पञ्चदश्यां च पर्वसु तैलाभ्यङ्गं तथा भोगं योषितश् च विवर्जयेत्
On the fourteenth, eighth, and fifteenth lunar days, and on festival days, one should avoid oil-massage, indulgence, and sexual relations.
नोत्क्षिप्तबाहुजङ्घश् च प्राज्ञस् तिष्ठेत् कदाचन न चापि विक्षिपेत् पादौ पादं पादेन नाक्रमेत्
A wise person should never stand with arms or legs outstretched, nor should he swing his feet, nor step one foot over the other.
पुंश्चल्याः कृतकार्यस्य बालस्य पतितस्य च मर्माभिघातम् आक्रोशं पैशुन्यं च विवर्जयेत्
He should avoid striking the vital points, abusing, or slandering a woman who has fulfilled her purpose, a child, or someone who has fallen.
दम्भाभिमानं तैक्ष्ण्यं च न कुर्वीत विचक्षणः मूर्खोन्मत्तव्यसनिनो विरूपान् अपि वा तथा
A discerning person should not act with deceit, pride, or harshness, nor should he do so toward fools, the insane, addicts, or the deformed.
न्यूनाङ्गांश् चाधनांश् चैव नोपहासेन दूषयेत् परस्य दण्डं नोद्यच्छेच् छिक्षार्थं शिष्यपुत्रयोः
He should not insult those who are disabled or poor, nor should he raise another's punishment for the sake of instructing a student or son.
तद्वन् नोपविशेत् प्राज्ञः पादेनाकृष्य चासनम् संयावं कृशरं मांसं नात्मार्थम् उपसाधयेत्
Likewise, a wise person should not sit by pulling the seat with his foot, nor should he prepare barley, porridge, or meat for his own sake.
सायं प्रातश् च भोक्तव्यं कृत्वा चातिथिपूजनम् प्राङ्मुखोदङ्मुखो वापि वाग्यतो दन्तधावनम्
He should eat in the evening and morning, after honoring guests, facing east or north, and in silence after cleaning his teeth.
कुर्वीत सततं विप्रा वर्जयेद् वर्ज्यवीरुधम् नोदक्शिराः स्वपेज् जातु न च प्रत्यक्शिरा नरः
He should always act thus, avoiding forbidden plants; he should never sleep with his head to the north or west.
शिरस् त्व् आगस्त्याम् आधाय शयीताथ पुरंदरीम् न तु गन्धवतीष्व् अप्सु शयीत न तथोषसि
He should sleep with his head toward Agastya or Purandara, but not in fragrant waters, nor on burning ground.
उपरागे परं स्नानम् ऋते दिनम् उदाहृतम् अपमृज्यान् न वस्त्रान्तैर् गात्राण्य् अम्बरपाणिभिः
Bathing is prescribed at the time of lunar eclipses except during the day; he should not clean his limbs with the ends of his clothes or with garments in hand.
न चावधूनयेत् केशान् वाससी न च निर्धुनेत् अनुलेपनम् आदद्यान् नास्नातः कर्हिचिद् बुधः
He should not shake his hair, nor shake his clothes; a wise person should never apply ointments without bathing.
न चापि रक्तवासाः स्याच् चित्रासितधरो ऽपि वा न च कुर्याद् विपर्यासं वाससोर् नापि भूषयोः
He should not wear red or variegated black clothes, nor should he reverse his garments or ornaments.
वर्ज्यं च विदशं वस्त्रम् अत्यन्तोपहतं च यत् कीटकेशावपन्नं च तथा श्वभिर् अवेक्षितम्
He should avoid torn clothes, those extremely damaged, those infested with insects or hair, and those watched by dogs.
अवलीढं शुना चैव सारोद्धरणदूषितम् पृष्ठमांसं वृथामांसं वर्ज्यमांसं च वर्जयेत्
He should avoid meat licked by a dog, meat spoiled by removal from the sauce, back meat, useless meat, and forbidden meat.
न भक्षयेच् च सततं प्रत्यक्षं लवणं नरः वर्ज्यं चिरोषितं विप्राः शुष्कं पर्युषितं च यत्
He should never constantly eat visible salt; Brahmins should avoid food that is stale, dried, or long-kept.
पिष्टशाकेक्षुपयसां विकारा द्विजसत्तमाः तथा मांसविकाराश् च नैव वर्ज्याश् चिरोषिताः
O best of twice-born, preparations of flour, vegetables, sugarcane, and milk, as well as meat preparations, should be avoided if long-kept.
उदयास्तमने भानोः शयनं च विवर्जयेत् नास्नातो नैव संविष्टो न चैवान्यमना नरः
He should avoid sleeping at sunrise and sunset; he should not bathe or sit with a distracted mind.
न चैव शयने नोर्व्याम् उपविष्टो न शब्दकृत् प्रेष्याणाम् अप्रदायाथ न भुञ्जीत कदाचन
He should not sit or lie on the ground making noise, nor should he eat without first giving to servants.
भुञ्जीत पुरुषः स्नातः सायंप्रातर् यथाविधि परदारा न गन्तव्याः पुरुषेण विपश्चिता
A person should eat after bathing, in the evening and morning as prescribed; a wise man should not approach another's wife.
