पादेनाप्य् अस्य पारत्र्यं कुर्याच् छ्रेयः स्वम् आत्मवान् अर्धेन चात्मभरणं नित्यनैमित्तिकानि च
With one quarter, he should pursue his own highest good, being self-controlled; with half, he should maintain himself and perform daily and occasional duties.
पादेनैव तथाप्य् अस्य मूलभूतं विवर्धयेत् एवम् आचरतो विप्रा अर्थः साफल्यम् ऋच्छति
With the remaining quarter, he should increase his fundamental resources; by acting thus, O Brahmins, one attains fruitful prosperity.
तद्वत् पापनिषेधार्थं धर्मः कार्यो विपश्चिता परत्रार्थस् तथैवान्यः कार्यो ऽत्रैव फलप्रदः
Likewise, for the prevention of sin, the wise should practice dharma; another kind is for the sake of the next world, and another here gives its reward.
प्रत्यवायभयात् कामस् तथान्यश् चाविरोधवान् द्विधा कामो ऽपि रचितस् त्रिवर्गायाविरोधकृत्
Out of fear of negative consequences, desire and another kind that is unobstructed arise; desire is also of two types, fashioned for the three aims and not causing obstruction.
परस्परानुबन्धांश् च सर्वान् एतान् विचिन्तयेत् विपरीतानुबन्धांश् च बुध्यध्वं तान् द्विजोत्तमाः
He should consider all their mutual connections, and also discern those with contrary effects; understand these, O best of the twice-born.
धर्मो धर्मानुबन्धार्थो धर्मो नात्मार्थपीडकः उभाभ्यां च द्विधा कामं तेन तौ च द्विधा पुनः
Dharma is for the sake of dharma's connection, and not for harming oneself; by both, desire is twofold, and thus those two are again twofold.
ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते बुध्येत धर्मार्थाव् अनुचिन्तयेत् समुत्थाय तथाचम्य प्रस्नातो नियतः शुचिः
He should awaken at the Brahma hour and reflect on dharma and wealth; rising, he should cleanse himself, and after rinsing his mouth, remain disciplined and pure.
पूर्वां संध्यां सनक्षत्रां पश्चिमां सदिवाकराम् उपासीत यथान्यायं नैनां जह्याद् अनापदि
He should worship the morning twilight with the stars and the evening with the sun, according to proper rule, and should not neglect it except in adversity.
असत्प्रलापम् अनृतं वाक्पारुष्यं च वर्जयेत् असच्छास्त्रम् असद्वादम् असत्सेवां च वै द्विजाः
He should avoid false speech, lies, harsh words, and also, O twice-born, reject false scriptures, false doctrines, and association with the unworthy.
सायंप्रातस् तथा होमं कुर्वीत नियतात्मवान् नोदयास्तमने चैवम् उदीक्षेत विवस्वतः
He should perform the fire offering in the evening and morning, being self-controlled, and thus observe the rising and setting of the sun.
केशप्रसाधनादर्शदन्तधावनम् अञ्जनम् पूर्वाह्ण एव कार्याणि देवतानां च तर्पणम्
Combing the hair, looking in the mirror, cleaning the teeth, applying collyrium—these should be done in the forenoon, along with offering satisfaction to the deities.
ग्रामावसथतीर्थानां क्षेत्राणां चैव वर्त्मनि न विण्मूत्रम् अनुष्ठेयं न च कृष्टे न गोव्रजे
On the paths of villages, dwellings, sacred places, and fields, one should not pass urine or stool, nor in cultivated land nor in a cow enclosure.
नग्नां परस्त्रियं नेक्षेन् न पश्येद् आत्मनः शकृत् उदक्यादर्शनस्पर्शम् एवं संभाषणं तथा
He should not gaze upon a naked woman who is not his wife, nor look at his own excrement; avoid seeing or touching a menstruating woman, and likewise avoid conversation with her.
नाप्सु मूत्रं पुरीषं वा मैथुनं वा समाचरेत् नाधितिष्ठेच् छकृन्मूत्रे केशभस्मसपालिकाः
He should not urinate, defecate, or engage in intercourse in water; nor should he sit on excrement or urine, nor on hair, ashes, or broken pottery.
तुषाङ्गारविशीर्णानि रज्जुवस्त्रादिकानि च नाधितिष्ठेत् तथा प्राज्ञः पथि वस्त्राणि वा भुवि
A wise person should not remain where there are scattered husks, embers, ropes, or cloth, nor should he place garments on the road or on the ground.
पितृदेवमनुष्याणां भूतानां च तथार्चनम् कृत्वा विभवतः पश्चाद् गृहस्थो भोक्तुम् अर्हति
After worshipping ancestors, gods, humans, and beings according to his means, a householder is then entitled to partake of food.
प्राङ्मुखोदङ्मुखो वापि स्वाचान्तो वाग्यतः शुचिः भुञ्जीत चान्नं तच्चित्तो ह्य् अन्तर्जानुः सदा नरः
Facing east or north, or in a clean and secluded place, with restrained speech and purity, a man should eat food with focused mind, always seated with his knees drawn up.
उपघातम् ऋते दोषान् नान्नस्योदीरयेद् बुधः प्रत्यक्षलवणं वर्ज्यम् अन्नम् उच्छिष्टम् एव च
Except in cases of harm or defect, the wise should not criticize food; food that is visibly salty or leftover should be avoided.
न गच्छन् न च तिष्ठन् वै विण्मूत्रोत्सर्गम् आत्मवान् कुर्वीत चैवम् उच्छिष्टं न किंचिद् अपि भक्षयेत्
One who is self-controlled should not pass urine or feces while walking or standing; likewise, he should not eat any leftovers in such a state.
उच्छिष्टो नालपेत् किंचित् स्वाध्यायं च विवर्जयेत् न पश्येच् च रविं चेन्दुं नक्षत्राणि च कामतः
One who has eaten should not speak of anything, nor should he recite sacred study; he should not look at the sun, moon, or stars at will.
भिन्नासनं च शय्यां च भाजनं च विवर्जयेत् गुरूणाम् आसनं देयम् अभ्युत्थानादिसत्कृतम्
He should avoid broken seats, beds, and vessels; a teacher's seat should be offered with proper respect, including rising and other honors.
अनुकूलं तथालापम् अभिकुर्वीत बुद्धिमान् तत्रानुगमनं कुर्यात् प्रतिकूलं न संचरेत्
A wise person should speak agreeably and appropriately, follow in suitable matters, and not act contrary to his teacher.
नैकवस्त्रश् च भुञ्जीत न कुर्याद् देवतार्चनम् नावाहयेद् द्विजान् अग्नौ होमं कुर्वीत बुद्धिमान्
He should not eat with only one garment, nor perform worship of deities; he should not invite twice-born for rituals, but may perform fire offerings with discernment.
न स्नायीत नरो नग्नो न शयीत कदाचन न पाणिभ्याम् उभाभ्यां तु कण्डूयेत शिरस् तथा
A man should not bathe naked, nor ever sleep unclothed; he should not scratch his head with both hands.
न चाभीक्ष्णं शिरःस्नानं कार्यं निष्कारणं बुधैः शिरःस्नातश् च तैलेन नाङ्गं किंचिद् उपस्पृशेत्
One should not wash the head frequently without reason; after washing the head with oil, he should not touch any limb before rinsing.
अनध्यायेषु सर्वेषु स्वाध्यायं च विवर्जयेत् ब्राह्मणानलगोसूर्यान् नावमन्येत् कदाचन
On all unsuitable days, one should refrain from sacred study; he should never show disrespect to a Brahmin, fire, cow, or the sun.
उदङ्मुखो दिवा रात्राव् उत्सर्गं दक्षिणामुखः आबाधासु यथाकामं कुर्यान् मूत्रपुरीषयोः
During the day, one should face north, at night face south, when relieving oneself; in times of illness, he may do so as needed for urine and feces.
दुष्कृतं न गुरोर् ब्रूयात् क्रुद्धं चैनं प्रसादयेत् परिवादं न शृणुयाद् अन्येषाम् अपि कुर्वताम्
He should not speak of a teacher's faults, and if the teacher is angry, he should appease him; he should not listen to slander, even if others are doing so.
पन्था देयो ब्राह्मणानां राज्ञो दुःखातुरस्य च विद्याधिकस्य गर्भिण्या रोगार्तस्य महीयतः
The path should be yielded to Brahmins, kings, the distressed or suffering, those learned, pregnant women, and the sick, as well as to those of high status.
मूकान्धबधिराणां च मत्तस्योन्मत्तकस्य च देवालयं चैद्यतरुं तथैव च चतुष्पथम्
So too to the mute, blind, deaf, intoxicated, insane, to temples, sacred trees, and at crossroads.
