Only mildly sour and pungent foods should be given in the śrāddha rite; extremely sour, overly salty, and excessively pungent items should be avoided.
Here, foods belonging to the demons are to be avoided from a distance; those that are well-cooked, unctuous, and only slightly bitter or sour are suitable.
Sweet foods are fit for the gods; these should be used in the śrāddha. Also, goat meat, domestic fowl, partridge, and hare meat.
Meat of the porcupine, rhinoceros, and fish called śivāla may be used in the śrāddha; also, vulture, red śiva fish, iron-colored fish, and those with scales.
Lion-headed fish and swordfish are also said to be suitable for śrāddha. As stated by Manu, rohu fish should also be used.
These should be used in offerings to gods and ancestors, and not omitted. Thus it has been stated by me, having been seen in the Vāraha scripture.
One who eats what I have forbidden will go to the hell called Raurava. These forbidden items have also been declared by Vāraha, O ascetics.
Foods unfit for twice-borns must not be given even to the ancestors; rohu fish, pig, tortoise, iguana, and swan should be avoided.
Also, the chakravāka, madgu, fish without scales, the kurara bird, boneless, those killed in the house, and domestic fowl should be avoided.
Kalaviṅka, peacock, bhāradvāja, śārṅgaka, mongoose, owl, cat, lopa, and other very difficult-to-catch animals should also be avoided.
Whoever eats the ṭiṭṭibha, jackal, tiger, bear, hyena, and other impure creatures is a person of evil mind.
Such a great sinner will go to Raurava hell; and whoever gives these condemned meats to the ancestors is wicked-souled.
He will cast even ancestors who dwell in heaven into hell; kusumbha greens, jambīra, sigruka, and kovidāra should be avoided.
Also, piṇyāka, vipruṣa, lentils, gṛñjana, hemp, kodrava, kokilākṣa, cukra, kambuka, and padmaka should be avoided.
Whoever eats the meat of the cakora, śyena, round gourd, bottle gourd, or the fruit of palm trees will go to hell.
Having given these to the ancestors, a man will go to a foul-smelling hell along with them; therefore, the wise should never bring these by any means.
These forbidden items have been declared by Vāraha himself for the sake of the ancestors; sages have preferred even eating their own flesh over these.
But indeed, one should never take these forbidden things with respect; even if done once out of ignorance or carelessness, O twice-borns—
If one has eaten forbidden foods, one should then perform expiation with fruits, roots, curd, milk, buttermilk, cow's urine, and barley gruel.
For each instance of eating food that is permitted or forbidden, one should observe a seven-day penance for each day, even if a twice-born commits such a forbidden act only once.
The body should be purified, especially by devotees of Vishnu; the forbidden substance should be avoided, as previously stated, O best of twice-born.
After this, one should gather oneself and perform the śrāddha according to one's ability; by performing śrāddha in this prescribed manner, suited to one's means, a person pleases the entire world, from Brahmā down to a blade of grass.
If a person's father is alive, or if both parents are deceased, how should the śrāddha be performed for the father? Please explain this in detail.
To whomever the father gives śrāddha, to that person the son should himself give śrāddha; thus, neither worldly nor Vedic dharma is diminished.
If the father is deceased but the grandfather is alive, O Brāhmaṇa, how should he perform the śrāddha? You are worthy to explain this.
He should offer the piṇḍa to the father and also feed the grandfather; as for the great-grandfather, the piṇḍa should be given—this is the decision in the scriptures.
For the deceased, the piṇḍa should be given, and the living should be fed; there is no sapiṇḍīkaraṇa, nor is the fortnightly śrāddha appropriate.
Whoever follows the conduct prescribed for the pitṛmedha ritual quickly prospers in life, wealth, and sons—of this there is no doubt.
Whoever recites this chapter on pitṛmedha at the time of śrāddha, for three ages, O twice-born, his ancestors eat that food.
Thus I have declared the pitṛmedha rite, which removes sin and increases merit; it should be heard by those who are intent, and it should also be recited at śrāddha ceremonies.
