पावन्तीं शतपत्त्रां च गन्धशेफालिकाम् अपि कुब्जकं तगरं चैव मृगम् आरण्यकेतकीम्
Pāvantī, śatapattrā, gandhaśephalika, kubjaka, tagara, and wild ketakī flowers should be given.
यूथिकाम् अतिमुक्तं च श्राद्धयोग्यानि भो द्विजाः कमलं कुमुदं पद्मं पुण्डरीकं च यत्नतः
Yūthikā and atimukta, which are suitable for śrāddha, as well as lotus, kumuda, padma, and puṇḍarīka, should be offered with care, O twice-born.
इन्दीवरं कोकनदं कह्लारं च नियोजयेत् कुष्ठं मांसी वालकं च कुक्कुटी जातिपत्त्रकम्
One should employ blue lotus, red lotus, white water-lily, kushta, mamsi, valaka, kukkuti, and jatipattra.
नलिकोशीरमुस्तं च ग्रन्थिपर्णी च सुन्दरी पुनर् अप्य् एवमादीनि गन्धयोग्यानि चक्षते
Nalikā, usira, musta, granthiparni, and sundari, as well as other such fragrant substances, are also considered suitable.
गुग्गुलुं चन्दनं चैव श्रीवासम् अगुरुं तथा धूपानि पितृयोग्यानि ऋषिगुग्गुलम् एव च
Guggulu, sandalwood, shrivasa, aguru, and other incenses are appropriate for offerings to ancestors, as is rishi-guggulu.
राजमाषांश् च चणकान् मसूरान् कोरदूषकान् विप्रुषान् मर्कटांश् चैव कोद्रवांश् चैव वर्जयेत्
One should avoid royal black gram, chickpeas, lentils, kodrava, viprusa, markata, and kodrava grains.
माहिषं चामरं मार्गम् आविकैकशफोद्भवम् स्त्रैणम् औष्ट्रम् आविकं च दधि क्षीरं घृतं त्यजेत्
Buffalo, yak, deer, sheep with a single hoof, female camel, camel, sheep, curd, milk, and ghee should be abandoned.
तालं वरुणकाकोलौ बहुपत्त्रार्जुनीफलम् जम्बीरं रक्तबिल्वं च शालस्यापि फलं त्यजेत्
Palm fruit, varuna, kakola, bahupatra, arjuna fruit, jambira, red bilva, and even the fruit of shala tree should be avoided.
मत्स्यसूकरकूर्माश् च गावो वर्ज्या विशेषतः पूतिकं मृगनाभिं च रोचनां पद्मचन्दनम्
Fish, boar, and tortoise, as well as cows, should especially be avoided, along with putika, deer musk, rochana, and padma-sandalwood.
कालेयकं तूग्रगन्धं तुरुष्कं चापि वर्जयेत् पालङ्कं च कुमारीं च किरातं पिण्डमूलकम्
Kāleyaka, substances with strong odor, turushka, palanka, kumari, kirata, and pindamulaka should be avoided.
गृञ्जनं चुक्रिकां चुक्रं वरुमां चनपत्त्रिकाम् जीवं च शतपुष्पां च नालिकां गन्धशूकरम्
Grinjana, cukrika, cukra, varuma, canapatrika, jiva, shatapuspa, nalika, and gandha-shukara should not be used.
हलभृत्यं सर्षपं च पलाण्डुं लशुनं त्यजेत् मानकन्दं विषकन्दं वज्रकन्दं गदास्थिकम्
Halabhṛtya, mustard, onion, and garlic should be abandoned, as well as manakanda, vishakanda, vajrakanda, and gadāsthika.
पुरुषाल्वं सपिण्डालुं श्राद्धकर्मणि वर्जयेत् अलाबुं तिक्तपर्णां च कूष्माण्डं कटुकत्रयम्
Purushalva, sapindalu, should be avoided in shraddha rites, as well as bottle gourd, bitter-leaved plants, kushmanda, and the three bitter things.
वार्ताकं शिवजातं च लोमशानि वटानि च कालीयं रक्तवाणां च बलाका लकुचं तथा
Eggplant, shivajata, hairy plants, banyan fruits, black vata, red vana, balaka, and lakucha should also be avoided.
श्राद्धकर्मणि वर्ज्यानि विभीतकफलं तथा आरनालं च शुक्तं च शीर्णं पर्युषितं तथा
In shraddha rites, vibhitaka fruit, aranala, fermented foods, stale, and old food should be avoided.
नोग्रगन्धं च दातव्यं कोविदारकशिग्रुकौ अत्यम्लं पिच्छिलं सूक्ष्मं यातयामं च सत्तमाः
One should not give substances with strong odor, kovidara, kashigru, excessively sour, slimy, minute, or overcooked foods, O best ones.
न च देयं गतरसं मद्यगन्धं च यद् भवेत् हिङ्गूग्रगन्धं फणिशं भूनिम्बं निम्बराजिके
Nor should one give food that has lost its taste, has the smell of liquor, or has a strong asafoetida odor, phanisha, bhunimba, or nimbarajika.
कुस्तुम्बुरुं कलिङ्गोत्थं वर्जयेद् अम्लवेतसम् दाडिमं मागधीं चैव नागरार्द्रकतित्तिडीः
Kustumburu, kaliṅga, amlavetasa, pomegranate, magadhi, ginger, wet ginger, and titthidi should be avoided.
आम्रातकं जीवकं च तुम्बुरुं च नियोजयेत् पायसं शाल्मलीमुद्गान् मोदकादींश् च भक्तितः
One should employ amrataka, jivaka, tumburu, payasa, shalmali, mudga, and various sweets with devotion.
पानकं च रसालं च गोक्षीरं च निवेदयेत् यानि चाभ्यवहार्याणि स्वादुस्निग्धानि भो द्विजाः
One should offer panaka, rasala, and cow's milk, as well as other foods that are wholesome, sweet, and unctuous, O twice-born ones.
ईषदम्लकटून्य् एव देयानि श्राद्धकर्मणि अत्यम्लं चातिलवणम् अतिरिक्तकटूनि च
Only mildly sour and pungent foods should be given in the śrāddha rite; extremely sour, overly salty, and excessively pungent items should be avoided.
आसुराणीह भोज्यानि तान्य् अतो दूरतस् त्यजेत् मृष्टस्निग्धानि यानि स्युर् ईषत्कट्वम्लकानि च
Here, foods belonging to the demons are to be avoided from a distance; those that are well-cooked, unctuous, and only slightly bitter or sour are suitable.
स्वादूनि देवभोज्यानि तानि श्राद्धे नियोजयेत् छागमांसं वार्तिकं च तैत्तिरं शशकामिषम्
Sweet foods are fit for the gods; these should be used in the śrāddha. Also, goat meat, domestic fowl, partridge, and hare meat.
शिवालावकराजीवमांसं श्राद्धे नियोजयेत् वाघ्रीणसं रक्तशिवं लोहं शल्कसमन्वितम्
Meat of the porcupine, rhinoceros, and fish called śivāla may be used in the śrāddha; also, vulture, red śiva fish, iron-colored fish, and those with scales.
सिंहतुण्डं च खड्गं च श्राद्धे योज्यं तथोच्यते यद् अप्य् उक्तं हि मनुना रोहितं प्रतियोजयेत्
Lion-headed fish and swordfish are also said to be suitable for śrāddha. As stated by Manu, rohu fish should also be used.
योक्तव्यं हव्यकव्येषु तथा न विप्रयोजयेत् एवम् उक्तं मया विप्रा वाराहेणावलोकितम्
These should be used in offerings to gods and ancestors, and not omitted. Thus it has been stated by me, having been seen in the Vāraha scripture.
मया निषिद्धं भुञ्जानो रौरवं नरकं व्रजेत् एतानि च निषिद्धानि वाराहेण तपोधनाः
One who eats what I have forbidden will go to the hell called Raurava. These forbidden items have also been declared by Vāraha, O ascetics.
अभक्ष्याणि द्विजातीनां न देयानि पितृष्व् अपि रोहितं शूकरं कूर्मं गोधाहंसं च वर्जयेत्
Foods unfit for twice-borns must not be given even to the ancestors; rohu fish, pig, tortoise, iguana, and swan should be avoided.
चक्रवाकं च मद्गुं च शल्कहीनांश् च मत्स्यकान् कुररं च निरस्थिं च वासहातं च कुक्कुटान्
Also, the chakravāka, madgu, fish without scales, the kurara bird, boneless, those killed in the house, and domestic fowl should be avoided.
कलविङ्कमयूरांश् च भारद्वाजांश् च शार्ङ्गकान् नकुलोलूकमार्जारांल् लोपान् अन्यान् सुदुर्ग्रहान्
Kalaviṅka, peacock, bhāradvāja, śārṅgaka, mongoose, owl, cat, lopa, and other very difficult-to-catch animals should also be avoided.
