Rukmeṣu, Pṛthurukma, Jyāmagha, Pālita, and Hari—Pālita and Hari were given by their father to the kings of Videha.
Rukmeṣu became king, supported by Pṛthurukma; but the king Jyāmagha, having been exiled by those two, dwelt in a hermitage.
Then the king, pacified and instructed by brāhmaṇas, took up his bow and, mounting his chariot with banner, went to another land.
He dwelt alone on the bank of the Narmadā, in a clay-built hut, having conquered Mount Ṛkṣavat, and stayed in the region of Śuktimat.
Jyāmagha's wife was Śaibyā, powerful and virtuous; though the king was childless, he did not take another wife.
He achieved victory in battle there and obtained a maiden; the lord of men, fearful, addressed his wife, calling her 'daughter-in-law.'
Hearing this, the queen asked, 'O lord, whose daughter-in-law is she?' On hearing this, Jyāmagha, best of kings, replied:
'She is the wife destined for the son who will be born to you.'
Through intense austerity, that fortunate and mature maiden gave birth to a son, Vidarbha.
Later, Vidarbha begot two sons, Kratha and Kaishika, both skilled in battle, upon the royal daughter, his daughter-in-law.
Bhima was the son of Vidarbha; Kunti became his son, and from Kunti was born Dhṛṣṭa, renowned for his valor in battle.
Three heroic sons, supremely righteous, were born to Dhṛṣṭa: Avanta, Dasharha, and the mighty Vishahara.
Dasharha's son was Vyoma; Vyoma's son was called Jīmūta; Jīmūta's son was Vikṛti, and his son was known as Bhīmaratha.
Then Bhīmaratha had a son named Navaratha; Navaratha's son was Dasharatha, and Dasharatha's son was Shakuni.
From him came Karambha; Karambha's son was Devarāta, the king; Devakṣatra was Devarāta's son, and Vṛddhakṣatra, famed for his greatness, was Devakṣatra's son.
Devakṣatra's son, equal to the gods in birth, was Madhur, the king who founded the lineage of the Madhus, and whose speech was sweet.
Then, from Madhur and the Vaidarbhi woman was born Purudvan, the foremost among men; Madhur's wife was of the Ikshvaku line, and she bore him a son.
Satvan, endowed with all virtues, increased the fame of the Sātvatas. Knowing this creation of the great-souled Jyāmagha, one should be joined with supreme delight and always be blessed with progeny.
Satvata's wife, Kaushalya, gave birth to virtuous sons: Bhāgina, Bhajamāna, the divine Devāvṛdha, and the king.
Andhaka, mighty-armed, and Vṛṣṇi, the joy of the Yadus, were also born; their four lineages are recounted here in detail.
Bhajamāna had two wives, Sṛñjayi and Bāhyakā, and Upabāhyakā; from them, many sons were born.
Krimi, Kramaṇa, Dhṛṣṭa, Śūra, and Puraṃjaya—these were born from Bhajamāna and Bāhyaka-Sṛñjayi.
Āyutājit, Sahasrājit, Śatājit, and Dāsaka were born from Bhajamāna and Upabāhyaka-Sṛñjayi.
The king Devāvṛdha, a performer of sacrifices, practiced great austerity, determined that his son would possess all virtues.
Engaged in austerity, living on leaves, and touching water, the river always pleased him as he continually purified himself.
Overwhelmed by thought, she did not reach a decision, for the river, being excellent, was favorable to the king.
He could not find such a woman by whom a son of this kind would be born; therefore, I myself will go and become his companion.
Then, having become a maiden, bearing a most splendid form, she chose the king, and that lord desired her.
In her, that noble-minded one placed a radiant embryo; then, in the tenth month, the best of rivers gave birth.
She bore a son endowed with all virtues, Babhrū, Devāvṛdha, O twice-born; in this lineage, those who know the ancient lore are renowned for singing thus.
