ब्राह्मणैः क्षत्रियैर् वैश्यैः श्राद्धं स्ववरणोदितम् कुलधर्मम् अनुतिष्ठद्भिर् दातव्यं मन्त्रपूर्वकम्
The śrāddha rite is to be given by Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas, who observe their own prescribed duties of their lineage, accompanied by mantras.
स्त्रीभिर् वर्णावरैः शूद्रैर् विप्राणाम् अनुशासनात् अमन्त्रकं विधिपूर्वं वह्नियागविवर्जितम्
Women, those of mixed castes, and Śūdras, following the instruction of Brāhmaṇas, should perform the rite without mantras, according to rule, and without fire offerings.
पुष्करादिषु तीर्थेषु पुण्येष्व् आयतनेषु च शिखरेषु गिरीन्द्राणां पुण्यदेशेषु भो द्विजाः
O twice-born, in holy places such as Puṣkara and others, in sacred shrines, on the peaks of great mountains, and in blessed regions,
सरित्सु पुण्यतोयासु नदेषु च सरःसु च संगमेषु नदीनां च समुद्रेषु च सप्तसु
In rivers with holy waters, in streams and lakes, at the confluences of rivers, and in the seven seas,
स्वनुलिप्तेषु गेहेषु स्वेष्व् अनुज्ञापितेषु च दिव्यपादपमूलेषु यज्ञियेषु ह्रदेषु च
In one's own purified home, in places duly permitted, at the roots of divine trees, and in sacred lakes fit for sacrifice,
श्राद्धम् एतेषु दातव्यं वर्ज्यम् एतेषु चोच्यते किरातेषु कलिङ्गेषु कोङ्कणेषु कृमिष्व् अपि
Śrāddha should be performed in these places; but it is said to be prohibited among Kirātas, Kaliṅgas, Koṅkaṇas, and even among Kṛmis.
दशार्णेषु कुमार्येषु तङ्गणेषु क्रथेष्व् अपि सिन्धोर् उत्तरकूलेषु नर्मदायाश् च दक्षिणे
Also in Daśārṇa, Kumārya, Taṅgaṇa, Kratha, on the northern bank of the Sindhu, and on the southern side of the Narmadā,
पूर्वेषु करतोयाया न देयं श्राद्धम् उच्यते श्राद्धं देयम् उशन्तीह मासि मास्य् उडुपक्षये
Śrāddha is not to be given in the eastern regions of the Karatoyā; here, śrāddha should be performed at the waning of the moon each month.
पौर्णमासेषु श्राद्धं च कर्तव्यम् ऋक्षगोचरे नित्यश्राद्धम् अदैवं च मनुष्यैः सह गीयते
Śrāddha should also be performed on full moon days when the moon is in the constellation of the bear; daily and non-ritual śrāddha with people is also mentioned.
नैमित्तिकं सुरैः सार्धं नित्यं नैमित्तिकं तथा काम्यान्य् अन्यानि श्राद्धानि प्रतिसंवत्सरं द्विजैः
Occasional śrāddha with the gods, as well as daily and occasional rites, and other desired śrāddhas, should be performed each year by the twice-born.
वृद्धिश्राद्धं च कर्तव्यं जातकर्मादिकेषु च तत्र युग्मान् द्विजान् आहुर् मन्त्रपूर्वं तु वै द्विजाः
The śrāddha for increase should be performed at birth and similar occasions; there, pairs of Brāhmaṇas are to be invited, indeed with mantras, O twice-born.
कन्यां गते सवितरि दिनानि दश पञ्च च पूर्वेणैवेह विधिना श्राद्धं तत्र विधीयते
After the girl’s first menstruation, for fifteen days, śrāddha is prescribed there according to the previous rule.
प्रतिपद्धनलाभाय द्वितीया द्विपदप्रदा पुत्रार्थिनी तृतीया तु चतुर्थी शत्रुनाशिनी
The first lunar day grants acquisition of wealth, the second gives two-footed offspring, the third is for those desiring sons, and the fourth destroys enemies.
श्रियं प्राप्नोति पञ्चम्यां षष्ठ्यां पूज्यो भवेन् नरः गणाधिपत्यं सप्तम्याम् अष्टम्यां बुद्धिम् उत्तमाम्
On the fifth day one attains prosperity, on the sixth a man becomes worthy of honor, on the seventh lordship over groups, and on the eighth the highest wisdom.
स्त्रियो नवम्यां प्राप्नोति दशम्यां पूर्णकामताम् वेदांस् तथाप्नुयात् सर्वान् एकादश्यां क्रियापरः
On the ninth day, women are obtained; on the tenth, fulfillment of all desires; on the eleventh, one who is devoted to rites attains all the Vedas.
द्वादश्यां जयलाभं च प्राप्नोति पितृपूजकः प्रजावृद्धिं पशुं मेधां स्वातन्त्र्यं पुष्टिम् उत्तमाम्
On the twelfth day, one who worships the ancestors gains victory, increase of offspring, cattle, intelligence, independence, and excellent nourishment.
दीर्घायुर् अथवैश्वर्यं कुर्वाणस् तु त्रयोदशीम् अवाप्नोति न संदेहः श्राद्धं श्रद्धासमन्वितः
By performing on the thirteenth day, one attains long life and prosperity; there is no doubt that śrāddha performed with faith yields these results.
यथासंभविनान्नेन श्राद्धं श्रद्धासमन्वितः युवानः पितरो यस्य मृताः शस्त्रेण वा हताः
Śrāddha should be performed with whatever food is available, with faith; for one whose ancestors died young or were slain in battle.
तेन कार्यं चतुर्दश्यां तेषां तृप्तिम् अभीप्सता श्राद्धं कुर्वन्न् अमावास्यां यत्नेन पुरुषः शुचिः
Therefore, desiring to satisfy them, a pure man should diligently perform the śrāddha on the new moon day, especially on the fourteenth day.
सर्वान् कामान् अवाप्नोति स्वर्गं चानन्तम् अश्नुते अतःपरं मुनिश्रेष्ठाः शृणुध्वं वदतो मम
He attains all desires and enjoys endless heaven; now, O best of sages, listen to my words.
पितॄणां प्रीतये यत्र यद् देयं प्रीतिकारिणा मासं तृप्तिः पितॄणां तु हविष्यान्नेन जायते
Whatever is to be given for the pleasure of the ancestors, that which brings joy, their satisfaction in the month arises from offerings of cooked food.
मासद्वयं मत्स्यमांसैस् तृप्तिं यान्ति पितामहाः त्रीन् मासान् हारिणं मांसं विज्ञेयं पितृतृप्तये
Grandfathers gain satisfaction for two months from fish and meat; for three months, know that deer meat satisfies the ancestors.
पुष्णाति चतुरो मासाञ् शशस्य पिशितं पितॄन् शाकुनं पञ्च वै मासान् षण् मासाञ् शूकरामिषम्
Rabbit meat nourishes the ancestors for four months; bird meat for five months, and pork for six months.
छागलं सप्त वै मासान् ऐणेयं चाष्टमासकान् करोति तृप्तिं नव वै रुरुमांसं न संशयः
Goat meat satisfies for seven months, antelope meat for eight months, and there is no doubt that deer meat brings satisfaction for nine months.
गव्यं मांसं पितृतृप्तिं करोति दशमासिकीम् तथैकादश मासांस् तु औरभ्रं पितृतृप्तिदम्
Cow meat brings satisfaction to the ancestors for ten months; likewise, sheep meat satisfies for eleven months.
संवत्सरं तथा गव्यं पयः पायसम् एव च वाध्रीनम् आमिषं लोहं कालशाकं तथा मधु
For a year, cow meat, milk, rice pudding, wild boar meat, iron, black nightshade, and honey bring satisfaction.
रोहितामिषम् अन्नं च दत्तान्य् आत्मकुलोद्भवैः अनन्तं वै प्रयच्छन्ति तृप्तियोगं सुतांस् तथा
Red fish meat and food given by one's own family grant endless satisfaction and the union of contentment to the children.
पितॄणां नात्र संदेहो गयाश्राद्धं च भो द्विजाः यो ददाति गुडोन्मिश्रांस् तिलान् वा श्राद्धकर्मणि
There is no doubt, O twice-born, that the Gayā śrāddha, or whoever offers sesame mixed with jaggery in the śrāddha ritual, satisfies the ancestors.
मधु वा मधुमिश्रं वा अक्षयं सर्वम् एव तत् अपि नः स कुले भूयाद् यो नो दद्याज् जलाञ्जलिम्
Honey or honey mixed offerings are all inexhaustible; may he be born in our family who gives us water offerings.
पायसं मधुसंयुक्तं वर्षासु च मघासु च एष्टव्या बहवः पुत्रा यद्य् एको ऽपि गयां व्रजेत्
Rice pudding mixed with honey, in the rainy season and under the Maghā stars, is to be desired; many sons are wished for, if even one goes to Gayā.
