Giving here is declared inexhaustible, removing birth, death, and old age; in the dark fortnight of the month of Māgha, at the waning of the moon, by you.
Approaching the mouth of Kokā, you must remain for five days; at that time, whoever performs śrāddha for the ancestors there—
He will obtain the previously described reward, without doubt; on the eleventh and twelfth days, I shall always remain here.
Whoever, wise, fasts here, obtains the previously described fruit; now go, O highly fortunate ones, to your desired abodes as you wish.
Saying, 'I too shall dwell here,' he vanished; when Varāha departed, the ancestors, having addressed Kokā, went forth.
Kokā, together with the sacred fords, remained on the king of mountains, her shadow made of earth, her lap enlarged by the offering of balls of rice.
With faith, the beautiful one conceived the child of Varāha; from her was born a son, Bhauma, Narakāsura, and the city of Prāgjyotiṣa was given to him by Viṣṇu.
Thus have I spoken at the mouth of Kokā about Viṣṇu, the granter of boons, in his divine Boar form; hearing this, a man, freed from impurity and sin, attains the fruit of performing ten horse sacrifices.
Tell me again, O blessed one, in detail the procedure for śrāddha—how, where, when, for whom, and with what; tell this, O possessor of austerity.
Hear, O tigers among sages, the procedure for śrāddha in detail; how, where, when, for whom, and with what materials—I shall now explain.
The śrāddha rite is to be given by Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas, who observe their own prescribed duties of their lineage, accompanied by mantras.
Women, those of mixed castes, and Śūdras, following the instruction of Brāhmaṇas, should perform the rite without mantras, according to rule, and without fire offerings.
O twice-born, in holy places such as Puṣkara and others, in sacred shrines, on the peaks of great mountains, and in blessed regions,
In rivers with holy waters, in streams and lakes, at the confluences of rivers, and in the seven seas,
In one's own purified home, in places duly permitted, at the roots of divine trees, and in sacred lakes fit for sacrifice,
Śrāddha should be performed in these places; but it is said to be prohibited among Kirātas, Kaliṅgas, Koṅkaṇas, and even among Kṛmis.
Also in Daśārṇa, Kumārya, Taṅgaṇa, Kratha, on the northern bank of the Sindhu, and on the southern side of the Narmadā,
Śrāddha is not to be given in the eastern regions of the Karatoyā; here, śrāddha should be performed at the waning of the moon each month.
Śrāddha should also be performed on full moon days when the moon is in the constellation of the bear; daily and non-ritual śrāddha with people is also mentioned.
Occasional śrāddha with the gods, as well as daily and occasional rites, and other desired śrāddhas, should be performed each year by the twice-born.
The śrāddha for increase should be performed at birth and similar occasions; there, pairs of Brāhmaṇas are to be invited, indeed with mantras, O twice-born.
After the girl’s first menstruation, for fifteen days, śrāddha is prescribed there according to the previous rule.
The first lunar day grants acquisition of wealth, the second gives two-footed offspring, the third is for those desiring sons, and the fourth destroys enemies.
On the fifth day one attains prosperity, on the sixth a man becomes worthy of honor, on the seventh lordship over groups, and on the eighth the highest wisdom.
On the ninth day, women are obtained; on the tenth, fulfillment of all desires; on the eleventh, one who is devoted to rites attains all the Vedas.
On the twelfth day, one who worships the ancestors gains victory, increase of offspring, cattle, intelligence, independence, and excellent nourishment.
By performing on the thirteenth day, one attains long life and prosperity; there is no doubt that śrāddha performed with faith yields these results.
Śrāddha should be performed with whatever food is available, with faith; for one whose ancestors died young or were slain in battle.
Therefore, desiring to satisfy them, a pure man should diligently perform the śrāddha on the new moon day, especially on the fourteenth day.
He attains all desires and enjoys endless heaven; now, O best of sages, listen to my words.
