Then Vishnu spoke to the ancestors and to Kokā, the great river: 'Whatever you have said to me, all this shall come to pass.'
'Yama shall be your presiding deity, Soma as declared in the svādhyāya, Agni as the adhiyajña; this is your arrangement.'
Agni, Vāyu, and Sūrya are indeed your abodes; Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Rudra are your supreme lords.
The Ādityas, Vasus, and Rudras—these are your forms; and the yogis, bodies of yoga, and streams of yoga, O virtuous ones.
You shall move about as you desire, bestowing fruits among all beings—those in heaven, those in hell, those on earth, both moving and unmoving.
By your own power of yoga, you shall nourish the excellent; this is energy, daughter of the Moon, embodiment of curds and honey.
She will become the highly fortunate Svadha, daughter of Dakṣa; here, this lovely-faced one will become your wife.
Known as Kokānadī, abiding with the king of mountains, possessing the great merit of countless sacred fords, protected by my own form.
From today onward, I shall dwell here, destroyer of sin; the vision of the Boar, its worship, grants merit, enjoyment, and liberation.
Drinking the water of Kokā destroys great sins; bathing at the fords is meritorious, and fasting here bestows heaven.
Giving here is declared inexhaustible, removing birth, death, and old age; in the dark fortnight of the month of Māgha, at the waning of the moon, by you.
Approaching the mouth of Kokā, you must remain for five days; at that time, whoever performs śrāddha for the ancestors there—
He will obtain the previously described reward, without doubt; on the eleventh and twelfth days, I shall always remain here.
Whoever, wise, fasts here, obtains the previously described fruit; now go, O highly fortunate ones, to your desired abodes as you wish.
Saying, 'I too shall dwell here,' he vanished; when Varāha departed, the ancestors, having addressed Kokā, went forth.
Kokā, together with the sacred fords, remained on the king of mountains, her shadow made of earth, her lap enlarged by the offering of balls of rice.
With faith, the beautiful one conceived the child of Varāha; from her was born a son, Bhauma, Narakāsura, and the city of Prāgjyotiṣa was given to him by Viṣṇu.
Thus have I spoken at the mouth of Kokā about Viṣṇu, the granter of boons, in his divine Boar form; hearing this, a man, freed from impurity and sin, attains the fruit of performing ten horse sacrifices.
Tell me again, O blessed one, in detail the procedure for śrāddha—how, where, when, for whom, and with what; tell this, O possessor of austerity.
Hear, O tigers among sages, the procedure for śrāddha in detail; how, where, when, for whom, and with what materials—I shall now explain.
The śrāddha rite is to be given by Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas, who observe their own prescribed duties of their lineage, accompanied by mantras.
Women, those of mixed castes, and Śūdras, following the instruction of Brāhmaṇas, should perform the rite without mantras, according to rule, and without fire offerings.
O twice-born, in holy places such as Puṣkara and others, in sacred shrines, on the peaks of great mountains, and in blessed regions,
In rivers with holy waters, in streams and lakes, at the confluences of rivers, and in the seven seas,
In one's own purified home, in places duly permitted, at the roots of divine trees, and in sacred lakes fit for sacrifice,
Śrāddha should be performed in these places; but it is said to be prohibited among Kirātas, Kaliṅgas, Koṅkaṇas, and even among Kṛmis.
Also in Daśārṇa, Kumārya, Taṅgaṇa, Kratha, on the northern bank of the Sindhu, and on the southern side of the Narmadā,
Śrāddha is not to be given in the eastern regions of the Karatoyā; here, śrāddha should be performed at the waning of the moon each month.
Śrāddha should also be performed on full moon days when the moon is in the constellation of the bear; daily and non-ritual śrāddha with people is also mentioned.
Occasional śrāddha with the gods, as well as daily and occasional rites, and other desired śrāddhas, should be performed each year by the twice-born.
