यन् मे प्रपितामहाइति ददौ च प्रपितामहे कुशगन्धतिलोन्मिश्रं सपुष्पम् अपसव्यतः
Saying, 'Let it be for my great-grandfather,' he gave to the great-grandfather, mixing kusa grass, sesame, and flowers, from the left side.
तद्वन् मातामहेभ्यस् तु विधिं चक्रे जनार्दनः तान् अर्च्य भूयो गन्धाद्यैर् धूपं दत्त्वा तु भक्तितः
In the same way, Janardana performed the rite for the maternal ancestors, worshipping them again with fragrances and incense, offering with devotion.
आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा इत्य् उच्चार्य जगत्प्रभुः ततश् चान्नं समादाय सर्पिस्तिलकुशाकुलम्
Uttering 'Adityas, Vasus, Rudras,' the Lord of the world then took food mixed with ghee, sesame, and kusa grass.
विधाय पात्रे तच् चैव पर्यपृच्छत् ततो मुनीन् अग्नौ करिष्य इति तैः कुरुष्वेति च चोदितः
Having prepared it in a vessel, he then asked the sages, 'Shall I offer it in the fire?' and, being instructed, did so among the Kurus.
आहुतित्रितयं दद्यात् सोमायाग्नेर् यमाय च ये मामकाइति च जपेद् यजुःसप्तकम् अच्युतम्
He should offer three oblations to Soma, Agni, and Yama, reciting the seven Yajus for each, saying, 'These are mine,' to the infallible one.
हुतावशिष्टं च ददौ नामगोत्रसमन्वितम् त्रिर् आहुतिकम् एकैकं पितरं तु प्रति द्विजाः
He gave the remnants of the offering, accompanied by names and lineages, three oblations each, to every ancestor, as did the twice-born.
अतो ऽवशिष्टम् अन्नाद्यं पिण्डपात्रे तु निक्षिपेत् ततो ऽन्नं सरसं स्वादु ददौ पायसपूर्वकम्
Then, the remaining food and drink should be placed in the piṇḍa vessel; after that, rice with sauce and sweetness, along with milk pudding, was offered.
प्रत्यग्रम् एकदा स्विन्नम् अपर्युषितम् उत्तमम् अल्पशाकं बहुफलं षड्रसम् अमृतोपमम्
It was fresh, prepared at one time, warm, not stale, excellent, with little greens, much fruit, possessing six tastes, and resembling nectar.
यद् ब्राह्मणेषु प्रददौ पिण्डपात्रे पितॄंस् तथा वेदपूर्वं पितृस्वन्नम् आज्यप्लुतं मधूक्षितम्
What was given to the Brāhmaṇas in the piṇḍa vessel, so also was offered to the ancestors: ancestral rice, preceded by Vedic recitation, soaked in ghee and honey.
मन्त्रितं पृथिवीत्य् एवं मधुवातातृचं जगौ भुञ्जानेषु तु विप्रेषु जपन् वै मन्त्रपञ्चकम्
He recited the mantra 'pṛthivī' and sang the Madhuvāta hymn; as the Brāhmaṇas ate, he chanted the fivefold mantra.
यत् ते प्रकारम् आरभ्य नाधिकं ते ततो जगौ त्रिमधु त्रिसुपर्णं च बृहदारण्यकं तथा
He did not recite more than the prescribed method; he chanted the Trimadhu, Trisuparṇa, and also the Bṛhadāraṇyaka.
जजाप वैषां जाप्यं तु सूक्तं सौरं सपौरुषम् भुक्तवत्सु च विप्रेषु पृष्ट्वा तृप्ता स्थ इत्य् उत
He recited the prescribed japa, the Sāvitra hymn, and the Puruṣa hymn; when the Brāhmaṇas had eaten, he asked, 'Are you satisfied?'
तृप्ताः स्मेति सकृत् तोयं ददौ मौनविमोचनम् पिण्डपात्रं समादाय च्छायायै प्रददौ ततः
When they replied, 'We are satisfied,' he gave water once as the sign to end silence, took the piṇḍa vessel, and then offered it to the shadow.
सा तद् अन्नं द्विधा कृत्वा त्रिधैकैकम् अथाकरोत् वाराहो भूम् अथोल्लिख्य समाच्छाद्य कुशैर् अपि
She divided that food in two, then made each portion into three; having marked the earth like a boar, she covered it with kuśa grass.
दक्षिणाग्रान् कुशान् कृत्वा तेषाम् उपरि चासनम् सतिलेषु समूलेषु कुशेष्व् एव तु संश्रयः
She placed kuśa grass with their tips to the south, set a seat upon them, and on the kuśa grass with sesame roots, she established the offering.
गन्धपुष्पादिकं कृत्वा ततः पिण्डं तु भक्तितः पृथिवी दधीर् इत्य् उक्त्वा ततः पिण्डं प्रदत्तवान्
After arranging fragrance and flowers, she devotedly offered the piṇḍa, saying, 'May the earth hold it,' and then gave the piṇḍa.
पितामहाः प्रपितामहास् तथेति चान्तरिक्षतः मातामहानाम् अप्य् एवं ददौ पिण्डान् स शूकरः
The grandfathers and great-grandfathers said, 'So be it,' from the sky; likewise, she offered piṇḍas for the maternal ancestors.
पिण्डनिर्वापणोच्छिष्टम् अन्नं लेपभुजेष्व् अदात् एतद् वः पितर् इत्य् उक्त्वा ददौ वासांसि भक्तितः
She gave the leftover food from the piṇḍa offering to those who eat remnants, saying, 'This is for you, ancestors,' and devotedly gave garments.
द्व्यङ्गुलजानि शुक्लानि धौतान्य् अभिनवानि च गन्धपुष्पादिकं दत्त्वा कृत्वा चैषां प्रदक्षिणाम्
She gave white garments, two fingers wide, washed and new, with fragrance and flowers, and then circumambulated them.
आचम्याचामयेद् विप्रान् पैत्रान् आदौ ततः सुरान् ततस् त्व् अभ्युक्ष्य तां भूमिं दत्त्वापः सुमनोक्षतान्
After sipping water, she had the Brāhmaṇas sip for the ancestors first, then for the gods; then, having sprinkled that ground, she offered water with flowers.
सतिलाम्बु पितृष्व् आदौ दत्त्वा देवेषु साक्षतम् अक्षय्यं नस् त्व् इति पितॄन् प्रीयताम् इति देवताः
She first gave water with sesame to the ancestors, then pure water to the gods, saying, 'May it be inexhaustible for us, may the ancestors and gods be pleased.'
प्रीणयित्वा परावृत्य त्रिर् जपेच् चाघमर्षणम् ततो निवृत्य तु जपेद् यन् मे नाम इतीरयन्
Having satisfied them, she turned away and recited the Aghamarṣaṇa three times; then, withdrawing, she recited, 'Whatever my name is,' thus.
गृहान् नः पितरो दत्त धनधान्यप्रपूरितान् अर्घ्यपात्राणि पिण्डानाम् अन्तरे स पवित्रकान्
O ancestors, grant us homes filled with wealth and grain; between the arghya vessels and the piṇḍa offerings, she placed the purifying grass.
निक्षिप्योर्जं वहन्तीति कोकातोयम् अथो ऽजपत् हिमक्षीरं मधुतिलान् पितॄणां तर्पणं ददौ
She should place them, bearing strength, and then recited the Koka water hymn; she offered cold milk, honey, and sesame for the satisfaction of the ancestors.
स्वस्तीत्य् उक्ते पैतृकैस् तु सोराह्ने प्नावतर्पयन् रजतं दक्षिणां दत्त्वा विप्रान् देवो गदाधरः
When the ancestors had said 'May it be auspicious,' the god Gadadhara, at midday, offered them water for satisfaction, gave silver as a gift to the brahmins.
संविभागं मनुष्येभ्यो ददौ स्वद् इति चाब्रुवन् कश्चित् संपन्नम् इत्य् उक्त्वा प्रत्युक्तस् तैर् द्विजोत्तमाः
He distributed portions to the people, saying 'This is for you,' and someone, having said 'It is accomplished,' was answered by those excellent twice-born ones.
अभिरम्यताम् इत्य् उवाच प्रोचुस् ते ऽभिरताः स्म वै शिष्टम् अन्नं च पप्रच्छ तैर् इष्टैः सह चोदितः
He said, 'Please enjoy,' and they replied, 'We are indeed satisfied.' He then inquired about the remaining food, prompted by their wishes.
पाणाव् आदाय तान् विप्रान् कुर्याद् अनुगतस् तदा वाजे वाजे इति पठन् बहिर् वेदि विनिर्गतः
Taking those brahmins by the hand, he led them, reciting 'vāje vāje,' and, having gone outside the altar, he accompanied them.
कोटितीर्थजलेनासाव् अपसव्यं समुत्क्षिपन् अलग्नान् विपुलान् वालान् प्रार्थयाम् आस चाशिषम्
With water from Koṭitīrtha, he performed the apasavya rite, raising his left hand, and, seeking abundant, unbroken blades of grass, he requested blessings.
दातारो नो ऽभिवर्धन्तां तैस् तथेति समीरितः प्रदक्षिणम् उपावृत्य कृत्वा पादाभिवादनम्
They said, 'May our donors prosper,' and he, having been thus addressed, turned clockwise around them and offered his respectful salutation at their feet.
