Ūrjā fell there, upon the broad plateau of the king of mountains, reaching the excellent holy place of the seven oceans.
From that place, the swift river named Kokā, filled with hundreds of sacred fords, flooded the mountain's peak; because she flowed, she is known as a river.
Then those ancestors, deprived of yoga, saw the great river with cold waters, O sages, but did not recognize her, though she was beautiful-eyed.
Seeing those ancestors afflicted by hunger, the king of mountains pointed out a jujube tree and a single cow yielding honeyed milk.
Milk, honey, the water of Kokā, and the fruit of the jujube—these were provided by the best of mountains for their nourishment.
By means of that sustenance, O best of sages, the ancestors dwelt there for ten thousand years, as if it were a single day.
Thus, when the ancestors had fallen and the svadhā offering had ceased, the Daityas, powerful sorcerers, and Rākṣasas arose in the world.
Those Daityas and Yātudhānas, swift and aggressive, attacked the groups of ancestors, who had been abandoned by all the gods.
Seeing the Daityas and Yātudhānas rushing upon them, the ancestors, in anger, seized a great rock standing on the bank of the Kokā.
As they grasped the rock, the swift river Kokā covered the ancestors with her waters, flooding Mount Himālaya.
Seeing the ancestors concealed, the Daityas and Rakshasas likewise climbed the vibhitaka tree, fasting and hidden from sight.
The ancestors, distressed by hunger and sinking in the waters, perceiving their own suffering while dwelling in the water, sang to Janardana, the god, seeking refuge in Hari.
Victory to you, Govinda, abode of the universe! May victory be ours, O Keshava. By your grace, O Janardana, you are able to lift us who are submerged in the waters, O spotless one of mighty radiance.
O Lord, most excellent, Vaikuntha, Varaha, Vishnu, Narayana, master of all, great lord of lords, proceed to the fearful ones and grant victory, O Padmanabha, against the night-dwelling beings of dreadful appearance.
Upendra, yogin, slayer of Madhu and Kaitabha, Vishnu, Ananta, Achyuta, Vasudeva, bearer of the bow, discus, lotus, and conch, protect us, O lord of the gods, from the Rakshasas.
You are the father of the world, O Shambhu; none other is able to subdue the terrifying host of night-dwellers. Therefore, we have sought refuge in you.
At the chanting of your name, the night-dwellers flee, spirits depart, and obstacles vanish. Thus, O Vishnu, righteousness and truth become supreme here.
Thus praised by the ancestors, the earth-bearer was pleased, and revealed his divine form. At the mouth of the kokā, the god saw the group of ancestors immersed in the water, bearing a stone upon their heads.
Seeing them submerged in the water, Janardana in the form of a boar resolved to lift the frightened group of ancestors.
Striking the stone with the tip of his tusk, the boar cast it aside, and taking the ancestors, the mighty one lifted them from the surface of the stone.
The ancestors, adorned with golden brilliance and attached to Varaha’s tusk, were freed from fear at the kokā’s mouth by the god Vishnu.
Having lifted the ancestors, the god, in the form of a boar, at the Vishnu tirtha, attentively gave them water through an iron spout.
Then, Keshava took kusha grass born from his own hair, and sesame seeds produced from his sweat, and made the finest offering vessel.
He fashioned a vessel shining like the sun, and a sacred tirtha as desired, and stood beneath the banyan tree, pure, with water bearing the Ganga.
Taking from the lofty peak the sacrificial herbs, honey, milk, fragrances, flowers, incense, and ointments.
Taking a cow from the lake and gems from the ocean, he scraped the earth with his tusk and sprinkled it with water.
He smeared it with heat-born clay, scraped it again with kusha grass, led it around with the offering vessel, and sprinkled it repeatedly.
Taking kusha grass with tips facing east, placed within hair pores, he summoned the sages and asked, 'I will perform the ancestor offering.'
When they also said, 'Do it among the Kurus,' the Lord summoned all the gods with mantras and bestowed their offerings in detail.
Having called them with mantras, Hari, the bearer of the discus and mace, performed the protection of the gods according to the Vedic procedure, using unbroken grains.
