A Shudra, by giving food to the twice-born, is freed from sin, even if he has earned it by his own strength and through injurious means.
Whoever gives food to Brahmins does not encounter hardships; a man who, with joy, gives food obtained justly.
By giving food to the twice-born, especially those advanced in the Veda, one is freed from sin; food that gives strength in this world makes the giver strong.
Having followed the path of the virtuous, one is freed from all sins; the path made by the knowers of giving is that which the wise follow.
Even among them, those who give food possess the eternal dharma; food acquired justly, in any circumstance, should be given by a person.
One should always give food obtained by rightful means, for food is the highest path; by giving food, a person attains the supreme destination.
Endowed with all desires, he enjoys happiness after death; thus, a person joined with merit is freed from sins.
Therefore, food should be given, avoiding injustice; the householder who eats food after offering it as a sacrifice to life-forces, always acts rightly.
A person should make each day fruitful by giving food; one who always feeds a hundred, especially the best among those learned in the Vedas.
To those who know justice, dharma, and history, such a person does not go to terrible hell nor does he engage in worldly suffering.
Endowed with all desires, he enjoys happiness after death; thus, one joined with good deeds delights, free from distress.
He becomes handsome, renowned, and wealthy; all this has been told to you—the great fruit of giving food. This is the root of dharmas and of all gifts, O twice-born.
As for those who have gone to the other world and reside in the place of their own deeds, how should their śrāddha be understood by sons and other relatives?
After bowing to Jagannātha, Varāha, the creator of worlds, listen—I will fully explain the śrāddha rite as it is prescribed.
Long ago, the Lord rescued the ancestors who were submerged in the waters of the Kokā, after performing śrāddha, just as the gods did there, O best of twice-born.
For what reason were your ancestors submerged in the waters of the Kokā? How were they rescued by Varāha, O best of twice-born?
At that Kokā-mukha tīrtha, which grants both enjoyment and liberation, we wish to hear—tell us, for our curiosity is great.
At the juncture of the Tretā and Dvāpara ages, the divine and human ancestors once stood with all the gods on the summit of Mount Meru.
As those ancestors, descended from Soma, sat together, a beautiful, divine maiden stood before them with joined palms; the divine ancestors gathered there spoke to her.
Who are you, O blessed one? Who is your lord? You should tell us.
She spoke to the ancestors and gods: 'I am Kalā, daughter of the Moon. I choose your lordship, if you desire.'
'Ūrjā is my first name, and then Svadhā; today, by you, the name Kokā has been established.'
Hearing her words, the divine and human ancestors gazed upon her face, yet could not be satisfied.
The Viśvadevas, seeing those ancestors intent on gazing at the maiden and fallen from their yoga, departed, abandoning heaven.
The blessed Moon, not seeing his daughter Ūrjā, became deeply troubled and pondered, 'Where has she gone?'
Then Soma understood that the ancestors, overcome by desire, had received her, gazed upon her, and taken her to heart by the power of their austerity.
Thereupon, filled with anger, the Moon cursed the ancestors: 'You have fallen from yoga and lost your senses; you shall fall down!'
Because you, foolish ones, desire my daughter without having received her, and because this virtuous maiden has accepted husbands while her father yet lives—
Therefore, abandoning her own duty and acting independently, let her become a flowing river, renowned in the world as Kokā, sheltered by the snowy mountain.
Thus cursed by the Moon, the divine and human ancestors, fallen from yoga, descended to the foot of Mount Himavat.
