गण्डूषाय ह्य् अपुत्राय विष्वक्सेनो ददौ सुतान् चारुदेष्णं सुदेष्णं च पञ्चालं कृतलक्षणम्
To Gandusha, who was childless, Vishvaksena gave sons: Charudesna, Sudeshna, and Panchala, marked with auspicious signs.
असंग्रामेण यो वीरो नावर्तत कदाचन रौक्मिणेयो महाबाहुः कनीयान् द्विजसत्तमाः
That hero, son of Rukmini, mighty-armed and youngest, never turned back from battle, O best of twice-born.
वायसानां सहस्राणि यं यान्तं पृष्ठतो ऽन्वयुः चारून् अद्योपभोक्ष्यामश् चारुदेष्णहतान् इति
Thousands of crows followed him as he went, saying, 'Today we shall feast on the slain by Charudesna.'
तन्त्रिजस् तन्त्रिपालश् च सुतौ कनवकस्य तौ वीरुश् चाश्वहनुश् चैव वीरौ ताव् अथ गृञ्जिमौ
Tantrija and Tantripala were the two sons of Kanavaka; Viru and Ashvahanus, both heroes, were the two sons of Grinjima.
श्यामपुत्रः शमीकस् तु शमीको राज्यम् आवहत् जुगुप्समानो भोजत्वाद् राजसूयम् अवाप सः
Shamik, son of Shyama, attained the kingdom; though he despised the Bhoja lineage, he performed the Rajasuya sacrifice.
अजातशत्रुः शत्रूणां जज्ञे तस्य विनाशनः वसुदेवसुतान् वीरान् कीर्तयिष्याम्य् अतः परम्
Ajatashatru was born for the destruction of enemies; now I shall recount the heroic sons of Vasudeva.
वृष्णेस् त्रिविधम् एवं तु बहुशाखं महौजसम् धारयन् विपुलं वंशं नानर्थैर् इह युज्यते
Thus the mighty and many-branched lineage of Vrishni is described in threefold manner; maintaining a vast family here is not desirable for those seeking no purpose.
याः पत्न्यो वसुदेवस्य चतुर्दश वराङ्गनाः पौरवी रोहिणी नाम मदिरादितथावरा
The wives of Vasudeva, fourteen in number and of excellent beauty, were Pauravi, Rohini by name, Madira and others of noble form.
वैशाखी च तथा भद्रा सुनाम्नी चैव पञ्चमी सहदेवा शान्तिदेवा श्रीदेवी देवरक्षिता
Also Vaishakhi, Bhadra, Sunamni as the fifth, Sahadeva, Shantideva, Shrīdevi, and Devarakshita.
वृकदेव्य् उपदेवी च देवकी चैव सप्तमी सुतनुर् वडवा चैव द्वे एते परिचारिके
Vrikadevi, Upadevi, and Devaki as the seventh; Sutanū and Vaḍavā, these two were attendants.
पौरवी रोहिणी नाम बाह्लिकस्यात्मजाभवत् ज्येष्ठा पत्नी मुनिश्रेष्ठा दयितानकदुन्दुभेः
Pauravi, called Rohini, was the daughter of Bahli; she was the eldest wife, O best of sages, and beloved of Anakadundubhi.
लेभे ज्येष्ठं सुतं रामं शरण्यं शठम् एव च दुर्दमं दमनं शुभ्रं पिण्डारकम् उशीनरम्
She obtained as her eldest son Rama, the refuge of all, as well as Shatha, Durdama, Damana, Shubhra, Pindaraka, and Ushinara.
चित्रा नाम कुमारी च रोहिणीतनया नव चित्रा सुभद्रेति पुनर् विख्याता मुनिसत्तमाः
Citrā was a maiden, the daughter of Rohiṇī; Citrā, also known as Subhadrā, became renowned again, O best of sages.
वसुदेवाच् च देवक्यां जज्ञे शौरिर् महायशाः रामाच् च निशठो जज्ञे रेवत्यां दयितः सुतः
From Vasudeva and Devakī was born Śauri, of great fame; and from Rāma and Revatī was born Niśaṭha, their beloved son.
सुभद्रायां रथी पार्थाद् अभिमन्युर् अजायत अक्रूरात् काशिकन्यायां सत्यकेतुर् अजायत
From Subhadrā, the charioteer, Abhimanyu, was born to Pārtha; from Akrūra and the princess of Kāśī, Satyaketu was born.
वसुदेवस्य भार्यासु महाभागासु सप्तसु ये पुत्रा जज्ञिरे शूराः समस्तांस् तान् निबोधत
Among the seven illustrious wives of Vasudeva, the heroic sons who were born—listen to all of them.
भोजश् च विजयश् चैव शान्तिदेवासुताव् उभौ वृकदेवः सुनामायां गदश् चास्तां सुताव् उभौ
Bhoja and Vijaya, both sons of Śāntideva; Vṛkadeva, from Sunāmā, and Gada—both were sons as well.
अगावहं महात्मानं वृकदेवी व्यजायत कन्या त्रिगर्तराजस्य भार्या वै शिशिरायणेः
Vṛkadevī gave birth to Agāvaha, a great soul; the princess of Trigarta was the wife of Śiśirāyaṇa.
जिज्ञासां पौरुषे चक्रे न चस्कन्दे च पौरुषम् कृष्णायससमप्रख्यो वर्षे द्वादशमे तथा
He sought to know manliness, but manliness did not arise; he was comparable to black iron, and so it was in the twelfth year.
मिथ्याभिशस्तो गार्ग्यस् तु मन्युनातिसमीरितः घोषकन्याम् उपादाय मैथुनायोपचक्रमे
Gārgyas was falsely accused, stirred by excessive anger; taking the daughter of Ghoṣa, he began union.
गोपाली चाप्सरास् तस्य गोपस्त्रीवेषधारिणी धारयाम् आस गार्ग्यस्य गर्भं दुर्धरम् अच्युतम्
Gopālī, an apsaras, disguised as a cowherd woman, bore the difficult, unconquerable embryo of Gārgyas.
मानुष्यां गर्गभार्यायां नियोगाच् छूलपाणिनः स कालयवनो नाम जज्ञे राजा महाबलः
By the arrangement of Śūlapāṇi, in the wife of Garga, a human child was born; he was named Kālayavana, a king of great strength.
वृत्तपूर्वार्धकायस् तु सिंहसंहननो युवा अपुत्रस्य स राज्ञस् तु ववृधे ऽन्तःपुरे शिशुः
With a body shaped like a lion, youthful, and with the front half well-formed, the child grew up in the inner chambers of the king, who had no sons.
यवनस्य मुनिश्रेष्ठाः स कालयवनो ऽभवत् आयुध्यमानो नृपतिः पर्यपृच्छद् द्विजोत्तमम्
That Kālayavana became the Yavana, O best of sages; as he fought, the king questioned the foremost of twice-born.
वृष्ण्यन्धककुलं तस्य नारदो ऽकथयद् विभुः अक्षौहिण्या तु सैन्यस्य मथुराम् अभ्ययात् तदा
Nārada, the illustrious sage, told him about the Vṛṣṇi-Andhaka clan; then, with an army of an akṣauhiṇī, he marched upon Mathurā.
दूतं संप्रेषयाम् आस वृष्ण्यन्धकनिवेशनम् ततो वृष्ण्यन्धकाः कृष्णं पुरस्कृत्य महामतिम्
He sent a messenger to the settlement of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; then the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, led by Kṛṣṇa, the wise one,
समेता मन्त्रयाम् आसुर् यवनस्य भयात् तदा कृत्वा विनिश्चयं सर्वे पलायनम् अरोचयन्
Gathered together and consulted, out of fear of the Yavana; after deciding, all preferred flight.
विहाय मथुरां रम्यां मानयन्तः पिनाकिनम् कुशस्थलीं द्वारवतीं निवेशयितुम् ईप्सवः
Leaving the beautiful Mathurā, honoring Pinākin, they wished to settle in Kuśasthalī, Dvāravatī.
इति कृष्णस्य जन्मेदं यः शुचिर् नियतेन्द्रियः पर्वसु श्रावयेद् विद्वान् अनृणः स सुखी भवेत्
Thus, whoever is pure and self-controlled, and recites this account of Kṛṣṇa's birth at festivals, being learned, becomes free from debt and happy.
क्रोष्टोर् अथाभवत् पुत्रो वृजिनीवान् महायशाः वार्जिनीवतम् इच्छन्ति स्वाहिं स्वाहाकृतां वरम्
Then Kroṣṭu had a son, Vṛjinīvān, of great fame; they desire Vārjinīvat, the best, created by Svāhā.
