आरामाणि विचित्राणि पुष्पाढ्यानीह मानवाः रोपयन्ति फलाढ्यानि नराणाम् उपकारिणः
Those who plant beautiful gardens here, rich in flowers and fruits, for the benefit of people,
वृक्षच्छायासु रम्यासु शीतलासु स्वलंकृताः वरस्त्रीगीतवाद्यैश् च सेव्यमाना व्रजन्ति ते
enjoy pleasant, cool, and well-adorned shade under trees, served by songs and music of noble women.
सुवर्णं रजतं वापि विद्रुमं मौक्तिकं तथा ये प्रयच्छन्ति ते यान्ति विमानैः कनकोज्ज्वलैः
Those who give gold, silver, coral, or pearls travel in chariots shining with gold.
भूमिदा दीप्यमानाश् च सर्वकामैस् तु तर्पिताः उदितादित्यसंकाशैर् विमानैर् भृशनादितैः
Land donors, radiant and satisfied with all desires, travel in chariots blazing like the rising sun, resounding loudly.
कन्यां तु ये प्रयच्छन्ति ब्रह्मदेयाम् अलंकृताम् दिव्यकन्यावृता यान्ति विमानैस् ते यमालयम्
Those who give a well-adorned maiden in marriage for Brahmin rites, surrounded by divine maidens, travel in chariots to the abode of Yama.
सुगन्धागुरुकर्पूरान् पुष्पधूपान् द्विजोत्तमाः प्रयच्छन्ति द्विजातिभ्यो भक्त्या परमयान्विताः
Those best of twice-borns who offer fragrant aloe, camphor, flowers, and incense to Brahmins with utmost devotion,
ते सुगन्धाः सुवेशाश् च सुप्रभाः सुविभूषिताः यान्ति धर्मपुरं यानैर् विचित्रैर् अभ्यलंकृताः
They, fragrant, well-attired, radiant, and splendidly adorned, proceed to the city of Dharma in wondrous, ornamented vehicles.
दीपदा यान्ति यानैश् च दीपयन्तो दिशो दश आदित्यसदृशैर् यानैर् दीप्यमाना यथाग्नयः
Illuminating the ten directions as they go, they travel in vehicles shining like the sun, blazing like fire.
गृहावसथदातारो गृहैः काञ्चनमण्डितैः व्रजन्ति बालार्कनिभैर् धर्मराजगृहं नराः
Those who give shelter to others, in houses adorned with gold, journey to the house of the Lord of Dharma in dwellings bright as the rising sun.
जलभाजनदातारः कुण्डिकाकरकप्रदाः पूजमानाप्सरोभिश् च यान्ति दृप्ता महागजैः
Those who give water vessels, pitchers, and pots, honored by Apsarases, go proudly on great elephants.
पादाभ्यङ्गं शिरोभ्यङ्गं स्नानपानोदकं तथा ये प्रयच्छन्ति विप्रेभ्यस् ते यान्त्य् अश्वैर् यमालयम्
Those who offer foot and head massages, as well as water for bathing and drinking, to Brahmins—these go to Yama’s abode on horses.
विश्रामयन्ति ये विप्राञ् श्रान्तान् अध्वनि कर्शितान् चक्रवाकप्रयुक्तेन यान्ति यानेन ते सुखम्
Those who give rest to weary Brahmins, exhausted from travel, journey happily in vehicles drawn by chakravāka birds.
स्वागतेन च यो विप्रं पूजयेद् आसनेन च स गच्छति तम् अध्वानं सुखं परमनिर्वृतः
He who welcomes a Brahmin with hospitality and a seat travels that path in supreme happiness and comfort.
नमो ब्रह्मण्यदेवेति यो हरिं चाभिवादयेत् गां च पापहरेत्य् उक्त्वा सुखं यान्ति च तत् पथम्
He who greets Hari with 'Salutations to the god of the Brahmanas,' and says, 'The cow removes sin,' travels that path happily.
अनन्तराशिनो ये च दम्भानृतविवर्जिताः ते ऽपि सारसयुक्तैस् तु यान्ति यानैश् च तत् पथम्
Those who eat only after feeding others, free from deceit and falsehood, also travel that path in vehicles drawn by cranes.
वर्तन्ते ह्य् एकभक्तेन शाठ्यदम्भविवर्जिताः हंसयुक्तैर् विमानैस् तु सुखं यान्ति यमालयम्
Those who eat once a day, without hypocrisy or deceit, travel happily to Yama’s abode in aerial cars drawn by swans.
चतुर्थेनैकभक्तेन वर्तन्ते ये जितेन्द्रियाः ते यान्ति धर्मनगरं यानैर् बर्हिणयोजितैः
Those who, having conquered their senses, eat only once in four days, journey to the city of Dharma in vehicles yoked with peacocks.
तृतीये दिवसे ये तु भुञ्जते नियतव्रताः ते ऽपि हस्तिरथैर् दिव्यैर् यान्ति यानैश् च तत् पदम्
Those who, observing strict vows, eat on the third day, also reach that place in divine vehicles drawn by elephants and chariots.
षष्ठे ऽन्नभक्षको यस् तु शौचनित्यो जितेन्द्रियः स याति कुञ्जरस्थस् तु शचीपतिर् इव स्वयम्
He who eats on the sixth day, always pure and self-controlled, goes seated on an elephant, like the lord of Śacī himself.
धर्मराजपुरं दिव्यं नानामणिविभूषितम् नानास्वरसमायुक्तं जयशब्दरवैर् युतम्
The divine city of the Lord of Dharma is adorned with various jewels, filled with manifold melodies, and resounds with victorious shouts.
पक्षोपवासिनो यान्ति यानैः शार्दूलयोजितैः पुरं तद् धर्मराजस्य सेव्यमानाः सुरासुरैः
Those who fast on alternate days travel in vehicles yoked with tigers to that city of the Lord of Dharma, attended by gods and demons.
ये च मासोपवासं तु कुर्वते संयतेन्द्रियाः ते ऽपि सूर्यप्रदीप्तैस् तु यान्ति यानैर् यमालयम्
Those who observe a monthly fast, with controlled senses, also go to Yama’s abode in vehicles blazing like the sun.
महाप्रस्थानम् एकाग्रो यः प्रयाति दृढव्रतः सेव्यमानस् तु गन्धर्वैर् याति यानैर् यमालयम्
He who, with focused mind and firm vow, undertakes the great journey, goes to Yama’s abode in vehicles attended by Gandharvas.
शरीरं साधयेद् यस् तु वैष्णवेनान्तरात्मना स रथेनाग्निवर्णेन यातीह त्रिदशालयम्
He who perfects his body with a Vaiṣṇava spirit within, travels here to the abode of the gods in a chariot shining like fire.
अग्निप्रवेशं यः कुर्यान् नारायणपरायणः स यात्य् अग्निप्रकाशेन विमानेन यमालयम्
Whoever, devoted to Nārāyaṇa, enters fire, goes to the abode of Yama in a radiant chariot shining like fire.
प्राणांस् त्यजति यो मर्त्यः स्मरन् विष्णुं सनातनम् यानेनार्कप्रकाशेन याति धर्मपुरं नरः
A mortal who gives up his life remembering the eternal Viṣṇu travels to the city of Dharma in a vehicle shining like the sun.
प्रविष्टो ऽन्तर् जलं यस् तु प्राणांस् त्यजति मानवः सोममण्डलकल्पेन याति यानेन वै सुखम्
A man who dies after entering water journeys happily in a chariot resembling the orb of the moon.
स्वशरीरं हि गृध्रेभ्यो वैष्णवो यः प्रयच्छति स याति रथमुख्येन काञ्चनेन यमालयम्
Whoever, as a devotee of Viṣṇu, offers his own body to the vultures goes to the abode of Yama in a foremost golden chariot.
स्त्रीग्रहे गोग्रहे वापि युद्धे मृत्युम् उपैति यः स यात्य् अमरकन्याभिः सेव्यमानो रविप्रभः
Whoever meets death in the house of a woman, in a cowshed, or in battle, goes, served by celestial maidens, shining like the sun.
वैष्णवा ये च कुर्वन्ति तीर्थयात्रां जितेन्द्रियाः तत् पथं यान्ति ते घोरं सुखयानैर् अलंकृताः
Those Vaiṣṇavas who, with controlled senses, undertake pilgrimages to holy places travel that difficult path adorned with comfortable vehicles.
