समादिशति तान् घोरान् निग्रहाय स्वकिंकरान् यथा यस्य विनिर्दिष्टो वसिष्ठाद्यैर् विनिग्रहः
He commands those fierce attendants to punish, as prescribed by Vasiṣṭha and others, according to the specific punishment assigned for each.
पापस्य तद् भृशं क्रुद्धाः कुर्वन्ति यमकिंकराः अङ्कुशैर् मुद्गरैर् दण्डैः क्रकचैः शक्तितोमरैः
Then, greatly enraged at the sinner, Yama's attendants torment him with goads, mallets, staffs, saws, spears, and javelins.
खड्गशूलनिपातैश् च भिद्यन्ते पापकारिणः नरकाणां सहस्रेषु लक्षकोटिशतेषु च
With blows of swords and spears, sinners are torn apart in thousands and hundreds of millions of hells.
स्वकर्मोपार्जितैर् दोषैः पीड्यन्ते यमकिंकरैः शृणुध्वं नरकाणां च स्वरूपं च भयंकरम्
Afflicted by the faults earned through their own actions, they are tormented by Yama's attendants. Hear now the dreadful nature and forms of the hells.
नामानि च प्रमाणं च येन यान्ति नराश् च तान् महावाचीति विख्यातं नरकं शोणितप्लुतम्
The names and measures by which men go to them—there is a hell called Mahāvācī, renowned and flooded with blood.
वज्रकण्टकसंमिश्रं योजनायुतविस्तृतम् तत्र संपीड्यते मग्नो भिद्यते वज्रकण्टके
It is mixed with adamantine thorns and stretches ten thousand yojanas wide; there, plunged and pressed, one is pierced by adamantine thorns.
वर्षलक्षं महाघोरं गोघाती नरके नरः योजनानां शतं लक्षं कुम्भीपाकं सुदारुणम्
A person who kills a cow endures a terrible hell for a hundred thousand years, in the dreadful Kumbhipāka, stretching a hundred thousand yojanas.
ताम्रकुम्भवती दीप्ता वालुकाङ्गारसंवृता ब्रह्महा भूमिहर्ता च निक्षेपस्यापहारकः
There is a blazing cauldron filled with burning sand and coals, where the slayer of a Brahmin, the usurper of land, and the thief of deposits are cast.
दह्यन्ते तत्र संक्षिप्ता यावद् आभूतसंप्लवम् रौरवो वज्रनाराचैः प्रज्वलद्भिः समावृतः
There, those thrown in are burned until the dissolution of creation; Raurava is surrounded by blazing, adamantine arrows.
योजनानां सहस्राणि षष्टिर् आयामविस्तरैः भिद्यन्ते तत्र नाराचैः सज्वालैर् नरके नराः
In that hell, sixty thousand yojanas in length and breadth, people are pierced by flaming arrows.
इक्षुवत् तत्र पीड्यन्ते ये नराः कूटसाक्षिणः अयोमयं प्रज्वलितं मञ्जूषं नरकं स्मृतम्
There, those who bear false witness are tormented like sugarcane, in a hell remembered as an iron, blazing chest.
निक्षिप्तास् तत्र दह्यन्ते बन्दिग्राहकृताश् च ये अप्रतिष्ठेति नरकं पूयमूत्रपुरीषकम्
Those cast there are burned, as are those who imprison others; this hell, called Apratiṣṭha, is filled with pus, urine, and excrement.
अधोमुखः पतेत् तत्र ब्राह्मणस्योपपीडकः लाक्षाप्रज्वलितं घोरं नरकं तु विलेपकम्
There, one who oppresses a Brahmin falls headfirst into a dreadful hell called Vilepaka, blazing with lac.
निमग्नास् तत्र दह्यन्ते मद्यपाने द्विजोत्तमाः महाप्रभेति नरकं दीप्तशूलमहोच्छ्रयम्
There, the best of twice-born, who are immersed in drinking liquor, are burned; this hell, called Mahāprabha, is filled with towering, blazing spears.
तत्र शूलेन भिद्यन्ते पतिभार्योपभेदिनः नरकं च महाघोरं जयन्ती चायसी शिला
There, those who violate another's wife are pierced with spears; the terrible hell called Jayantī is an iron rock.
तया चाक्रम्यते पापः परदारोपसेवकः नरकं शाल्मलाख्यं तु प्रदीप्तदृढकण्टकम्
By that, the sinner who approaches another's wife is trampled; the hell called Śālmalī is filled with blazing, hard thorns.
तया लिङ्गति दुःखार्ता नारी बहुनरंगमा ये वदन्ति सदासत्यं परमर्मावकर्तनम्
There, a woman tormented by much suffering clings to him; those who always speak falsehoods undergo the cutting of their vital organs.
जिह्वा चोच्छ्रियते तेषां सदस्यैर् यमकिंकरैः ये तु रागैः कटाक्षैश् च वीक्षन्ते परयोषितम्
Their tongues are torn out by the servants of Yama in the assembly; those who look at another's wife with lustful glances—
तेषां चक्षूंषि नाराचैर् विध्यन्ते यमकिंकरैः
—their eyes are pierced with arrows by the servants of Yama.
मातरं ये ऽपि गच्छन्ति भगिनीं दुहितरं स्नुषाम् स्त्रीबालवृद्धहन्तारो यावद् इन्द्राश् चतुर्दश ज्वालामालाकुलं रौद्रं महारौरवसंज्ञितम्
Those who approach their mother, sister, daughter, or daughter-in-law, and those who kill women, children, or the elderly, as long as the fourteen Indras reign, are cast into the dreadful hell called Mahāraurava, filled with garlands of flames.
नरकं योजनानां च सहस्राणि चतुर्दश पुरं क्षेत्रं गृहं ग्रामं यो दीपयति वह्निना
The hell stretches fourteen thousand yojanas; one who sets fire to a city, field, house, or village—
स तत्र दह्यते मूढो यावत् कल्पस्थितिर् नरः तामिस्रम् इति विख्यातं लक्षयोजनविस्तृतम्
—that deluded person is burned there for the duration of a kalpa; this hell, known as Tāmisra, extends a hundred thousand yojanas.
निपतद्भिः सदा रौद्रः खड्गपट्टिशमुद्गरैः तत्र चौरा नराः क्षिप्तास् ताड्यन्ते यमकिंकरैः
There, it is always dreadful, with swords, pikes, and maces falling; thieves are thrown there and beaten by the servants of Yama.
शूलशक्तिगदाखड्गैर् यावत् कल्पशतत्रयम् तामिस्राद् द्विगुणं प्रोक्तं महातामिस्रसंज्ञितम्
With spears, missiles, maces, and swords, for three hundred kalpas; Mahātāmisra, said to be twice as severe as Tāmisra.
जलौकासर्पसंपूर्णां निरालोकं सुदुःखदम् मातृहा पितृहा चैव मित्रविस्रम्भघातकः
Filled with leeches and serpents, utterly dark and exceedingly painful is the hell for the slayer of mother, slayer of father, and betrayer of trust in friendship.
तिष्ठन्ति तक्ष्यमाणाश् च यावत् तिष्ठति मेदिनी असिपत्त्रवनं नाम नरकं भूरिदुःखदम्
There, they are cut continuously for as long as the earth endures—this is the hell called the Forest of Sword-leaves, a place of immense suffering.
योजनायुतविस्तारं ज्वलत्खड्गैः समाकुलम् पातितस् तत्र तैः खड्गैः शतधा तु समाहतः
Extending for ten thousand yojanas and crowded with blazing swords, one who falls there is struck by those swords and cut into a hundred pieces.
मित्रघ्नः कृत्यते तावद् यावद् आभूतसंप्लवम् करम्भवालुका नाम नरकं योजनायुतम्
The slayer of a friend is tormented there until the dissolution of creation, in the hell called Karambha-sand, which stretches for ten thousand yojanas.
कूपाकारं वृतं दीप्तैर् वालुकाङ्गारकण्टकैः दह्यते भिद्यते वर्षलक्षायुतशतत्रयम्
Shaped like a well and filled with blazing sand and coals with thorns, one is burned and broken there for three hundred million years.
येन दग्धो जनो नित्यं मिथ्योपायैः सुदारुणैः काकोलं नाम नरकं कृमिपूयपरिप्लुतम्
By whom people are always scorched with cruel deceptions, that one falls into the hell called Kakola, filled with worms and foul pus.
