असिलोमा पुलोमा च बाष्कलः प्रमदो मदः स्वमिश्रः कालवदनः करालः केशिर् एव च
Asilomā, Pulomā, Bāṣkala, Pramada, Mada, Svamiśra, Kālavadana, Karāla, and Keśi as well,
एकाक्षश् चन्द्रमा राहुः संह्रादः सम्बरः स्वनः शतघ्नीचक्रहस्ताश् च तथा मुशलपाणयः
Ekākṣa, Candramā, Rāhu, Saṃhrāda, Sambara, Svanā, those bearing Śataghnī-discuses, and those wielding maces,
अश्वयन्त्रायुधोपेता भिन्दिपालायुधास् तथा शूलोलूखलहस्ताश् च परश्वधधरास् तथा
Equipped with horse-restraining weapons, with slings as weapons, with tridents and mortars in hand, and those bearing axes as well,
पाशमुद्गरहस्ताश् च तथा परिघपाणयः महाशिलाप्रहरणाः शूलहस्ताश् च दानवाः
Those with nooses and clubs in hand, those wielding iron bars, those armed with great stones, and Daityas bearing tridents,
नानाप्रहरणा घोरा नानावेशा महाबलाः कूर्मकुक्कुटवक्त्राश् च शशोलूकमुखास् तथा
Terrifying ones with various weapons, of many forms and great strength, with faces of tortoises and cocks, and also with faces of hares and owls,
खरोष्ट्रवदनाश् चैव वराहवदनास् तथा मार्जारशिखिवक्त्राश् च महावक्त्रास् तथा परे
With faces of donkeys and camels, and also of boars, with faces of cats and peacocks, and others with great jaws,
नक्रमेषाननाः शूरा गोजाविमहिषाननाः गोधाशल्लकिवक्त्राश् च क्रोष्टुवक्त्राश् च दानवाः
Heroes with faces of crocodiles and goats, with faces of cows, elephants, and buffaloes, with faces of iguanas and lizards, and Daityas with faces of jackals,
आखुदर्दुरवक्त्राश् च घोरा वृकमुखास् तथा भीमा मकरवक्त्राश् च क्रौञ्चवक्त्राश् च दानवाः
With faces of mice and frogs, terrifying ones with wolf faces, dreadful ones with faces of makaras, and Daityas with faces of cranes.
अश्वाननाः खरमुखा मयूरवदनास् तथा गजेन्द्रचर्मवसनास् तथा कृष्णाजिनाम्बराः
With faces like horses, mouths like donkeys, faces like peacocks, and clothed in elephant hides, as well as garments of black antelope skin.
चीरसंवृतगात्राश् च तथा नीलकवाससः उष्णीषिणो मुकुटिनस् तथा कुण्डलिनो ऽसुराः
Their bodies wrapped in bark-cloth, wearing blue garments, with turbans and crowns, and earrings—these were the Asuras.
किरीटिनो लम्बशिखाः कम्बुग्रीवाः सुवर्चसः नानावेशधरा दैत्या नानामाल्यानुलेपनाः
Crowned, with long locks of hair, possessing necks like conch shells, radiant in appearance, the Daityas wore various costumes and adorned themselves with diverse garlands and ointments.
स्वान्य् आयुधानि संगृह्य प्रदीप्तानि च तेजसा क्रममाणं हृषीकेशम् उपावर्तन्त सर्वशः
Gathering their own weapons, blazing with energy, they all approached Hṛṣīkeśa as he advanced.
प्रमथ्य सर्वान् दैतेयान् पादहस्ततलैर् विभुः रूपं कृत्वा महाभीमं जहाराशु स मेदिनीम्
The mighty one crushed all the Daityas with his hands and feet, assuming a most terrifying form, and swiftly seized the earth.
तस्य विक्रमतो भूमिं चन्द्रादित्यौ स्तनान्तरे नभः प्रक्रममाणस्य नाभ्यां किल तथा स्थितौ
As he strode across the earth, the moon and sun were between his breasts, and as he moved through the sky, they were said to be at his navel.
परम् आक्रममाणस्य जानुदेशे व्यवस्थितौ विष्णोर् अमितवीर्यस्य वदन्त्य् एवं द्विजातयः
As he took his supreme stride, the moon and sun were positioned at his knees—so say the twice-born regarding Viṣṇu of immeasurable power.
हृत्वा स मेदिनीं कृत्स्नां हत्वा चासुरपुंगवान् ददौ शक्राय वसुधां विष्णुर् बलवतां वरः
Having seized the entire earth and slain the foremost Asuras, Viṣṇu, the best among the powerful, gave the earth to Śakra.
एष वो वामनो नाम प्रादुर्भावो महात्मनः वेदविद्भिर् द्विजैर् एतत् कथ्यते वैष्णवं यशः
This is the manifestation of Vāmana, the great soul; the knowers of the Vedas, the twice-born, recount this as the glory of Viṣṇu.
भूयो भूतात्मनो विष्णोः प्रादुर्भावो महात्मनः दत्तात्रेय इति ख्यातः क्षमया परया युतः
Again, there was a manifestation of Viṣṇu, the great soul, known as Dattātreya, endowed with supreme patience.
तेन नष्टेषु वेदेषु प्रक्रियासु मखेषु च चातुर्वर्ण्ये च संकीर्णे धर्मे शिथिलतां गते
When the Vedas, rituals, and sacrifices were lost, and the fourfold order was confused, and dharma had become weakened,
अतिवर्धति चाधर्मे सत्ये नष्टे ऽनृते स्थिते प्रजासु शीर्यमाणासु धर्मे चाकुलतां गते
When unrighteousness greatly increased, truth was lost and falsehood prevailed, people decayed, and dharma was in turmoil,
सयज्ञाः सक्रिया वेदाः प्रत्यानीता हि तेन वै चातुर्वर्ण्यम् असंकीर्णं कृतं तेन महात्मना
He restored the Vedas with their rites and sacrifices, and established the fourfold order without confusion, that great soul.
तेन हैहयराजस्य कार्तवीर्यस्य धीमतः वरदेन वरो दत्तो दत्तात्रेयेण धीमता
To the wise king Kārtavīrya of the Haihayas, a boon was granted by Dattātreya, the wise one.
एतद् बाहुद्वयं यत् ते तत् ते मम कृते नृप शतानि दश बाहूनां भविष्यन्ति न संशयः
This pair of arms of yours, O king, will become, for my sake, ten hundred arms—there is no doubt.
पालयिष्यसि कृत्स्नां च वसुधां वसुधेश्वर दुर्निरीक्ष्यो ऽरिवृन्दानां युद्धस्थश् च भविष्यसि
You will protect the entire earth, O lord of the earth, and you will be impossible to behold for hosts of enemies, and will stand firm in battle.
एष वो वैष्णवः श्रीमान् प्रादुर्भावो ऽद्भुतः शुभः भूयश् च जामदग्न्यो ऽयं प्रादुर्भावो महात्मनः
This is the glorious, wondrous, auspicious manifestation of Viṣṇu for you; again, this is the manifestation of the great soul Jāmadagnya.
यत्र बाहुसहस्रेण द्विषतां दुर्जयं रणे रामो ऽर्जुनम् अनीकस्थं जघान नृपतिं प्रभुः
Where, with a thousand arms, Rāma, the lord, slew the unconquerable king Arjuna, stationed in the ranks, in battle.
रथस्थं पार्थिवं रामः पातयित्वार्जुनं भुवि धर्षयित्वार्जुनं रामः क्रोशमानं च मेघवत्
Rama struck down the king seated in his chariot, casting Arjuna to the ground; Rama, overpowering Arjuna, cried out like a thundercloud.
कृत्स्नं बाहुसहस्रं च चिच्छेद भृगुनन्दनः परश्वधेन दीप्तेन ज्ञातिभिः सहितस्य वै
The son of Bhrigu cut down the entire thousand-armed host with his blazing axe, even as they stood together with their kin.
कीर्णा क्षत्रियकोटीभिर् मेरुमन्दरभूषणा त्रिः सप्तकृत्वः पृथिवी तेन निःक्षत्रिया कृता
Adorned by Meru and Mandara, the earth was filled with countless Kshatriyas; yet, three times seven, it was made devoid of Kshatriyas by him.
कृत्वा निःक्षत्रियां चैनां भार्गवः सुमहायशाः सर्वपापविनाशाय वाजिमेधेन चेष्टवान्
Having rendered the earth free of Kshatriyas, the illustrious Bhargava performed a horse sacrifice for the destruction of all sins.
