यदा वरमदोन्मत्तो विचरन् दानवो भुवि यज्ञीयान् अकरोद् दैत्यान् अयज्ञीयाश् च देवताः
When that Dānava, intoxicated by the boon, roamed the earth, he made the Daityas performers of sacrifice and the gods deprived of sacrifice.
आदित्या वसवः साध्या विश्वे च मरुतस् तथा शरण्यं शरणं विष्णुम् उपतस्थुर् महाबलम्
The Ādityas, Vasus, Sādhyas, Viśvedevas, and Maruts then sought refuge in Viṣṇu, the mighty one, their protector.
देवब्रह्ममयं यज्ञं ब्रह्मदेवं सनातनम् भूतं भव्यं भविष्यं च प्रभुं लोकनमस्कृतम् नारायणं विभुं देवं शरण्यं शरणं गताः
They took refuge in Nārāyaṇa, the all-pervading god, the sacrifice made of gods and Brahman, the eternal one—lord of past, present, and future, honored by the worlds.
त्रायस्व नो ऽद्य देवेश हिरण्यकशिपोर् भयात् त्वं हि नः परमो देवस् त्वं हि नः परमो गुरुः
Protect us today, O Lord of gods, from the fear of Hiraṇyakaśipu; for you are our supreme god, you are indeed our highest teacher.
त्वं हि नः परमो धाता ब्रह्मादीनां सुरोत्तम उत्फुल्लामलपत्त्राक्ष शत्रुपक्षक्षयंकर क्षयाय दितिवंशस्य शरणं त्वं भवस्व नः
You are truly our supreme creator, the best of gods, even among Brahmā and the others; with eyes like fully blossomed, spotless lotus petals, destroyer of enemy hosts—be our refuge for the destruction of the race of Diti.
भयं त्यजध्वम् अमरा अभयं वो ददाम्य् अहम् तथैव त्रिदिवं देवाः प्रतिलप्स्यथ मा चिरम्
Abandon fear, O immortals; I grant you freedom from fear. And soon, O gods, you will regain heaven just as before.
एषो ऽहं सगणं दैत्यं वरदानेन दर्पितम् अवध्यम् अमरेन्द्राणां दानवेन्द्रं निहन्मि तम्
This Daitya, proud from the boon and invincible to the lords of immortals, I shall slay along with his followers—this lord of Dānavas.
एवम् उक्त्वा तु भगवान् विसृज्य त्रिदशेश्वरान् हिरण्यकशिपोः स्थानम् आजगाम महाबलः
Having thus spoken, the Lord dismissed the rulers of the gods and, possessing great might, went to the abode of Hiraṇyakaśipu.
नरस्यार्धतनुं कृत्वा सिंहस्यार्धतनुं प्रभुः नारसिंहेन वपुषा पाणिं संस्पृश्य पाणिना
Assuming a form half-man and half-lion, the Lord, with the body of Narasiṃha, touched him with his hand.
घनजीमूतसंकाशो घनजीमूतनिस्वनः घनजीमूतदीप्तौजा जीमूत इव वेगवान्
He was like a dense thundercloud in appearance, with the roar of a thundercloud, with the radiance of a thundercloud, and swift as a thundercloud.
दैत्यं सो ऽतिबलं दृष्ट्वा दृप्तशार्दूलविक्रमः दृप्तैर् दैत्यगणैर् गुप्तं हतवान् एकपाणिना
Seeing that exceedingly powerful Daitya, fierce as a proud tiger in valor, and surrounded by arrogant hosts of Daityas, he slew him single-handedly.
नृसिंह एष कथितो भूयो ऽयं वामनः परः यत्र वामनम् आस्थाय रूपं दैत्यविनाशनम्
This one is known as Narasiṃha; again, he is the supreme Vāmana, in which form, assuming the appearance of Vāmana, he brought about the destruction of the Daityas.
बलेर् बलवतो यज्ञे बलिना विष्णुना पुरा विक्रमैस् त्रिभिर् अक्षोभ्याः क्षोभितास् ते महासुराः
In the sacrifice of the mighty Bali, long ago, those great and unshakable Asuras were overcome by the powerful Viṣṇu with his three strides.
विप्रचित्तिः शिवः शङ्कुर् अयःशङ्कुस् तथैव च अयःशिरा अश्वशिरा हयग्रीवश् च वीर्यवान्
Vipracitti, Śiva, Śaṅku, Ayaḥśaṅku likewise, Ayaḥśirā, Aśvaśirā, and the mighty Hayagrīva—
वेगवान् केतुमान् उग्रः सोग्रव्यग्रो महासुरः पुष्करः पुष्कलश् चैव शाश्वो ऽश्वपतिर् एव च
Vegavān, Ketumān, Ugra, Sogravyagra the great Asura, Puṣkara, Puṣkala, Śāśva, and Aśvapati as well,
प्रह्लादो ऽश्वपतिः कुम्भः संह्रादो गमनप्रियः अनुह्रादो हरिहयो वाराहः संहरो ऽनुजः
Prahlāda, Aśvapati, Kumbha, Saṃhrāda, Gamanapriya, Anuhrāda, Harihaya, Vārāha, Saṃhara, and his younger brother,
शरभः शलभश् चैव कुपथः क्रोधनः क्रथः बृहत्कीर्तिर् महाजिह्वः शङ्कुकर्णो महास्वनः
Śarabha, Śalabha, Kupatha, Krodhana, Kratha, Bṛhatkīrti, Mahājihva, Śaṅkukarṇa, and Mahāsvana,
दीप्तजिह्वो ऽर्कनयनो मृगपादो मृगप्रियः वायुर् गरिष्ठो नमुचिः सम्बरो विस्करो महान्
Dīptajihva, Arkanayana, Mṛgapāda, Mṛgapriya, Vāyu, Gariṣṭha, Namuci, Sambara, Viskara the great,
चन्द्रहन्ता क्रोधहन्ता क्रोधवर्धन एव च कालकः कालकोपश् च वृत्रः क्रोधो विरोचनः
Candrahantā, Krodhahantā, Krodhavardhana as well, Kālaka, Kālakope, Vṛtra, Krodha, and Virocana,
गरिष्ठश् च वरिष्ठश् च प्रलम्बनरकाव् उभौ इन्द्रतापनवातापी केतुमान् बलदर्पितः
Gariṣṭha, Variṣṭha, both Pralamba and Naraka, Indratāpana, Vātāpī, Ketumān, and Baladarpita,
असिलोमा पुलोमा च बाष्कलः प्रमदो मदः स्वमिश्रः कालवदनः करालः केशिर् एव च
Asilomā, Pulomā, Bāṣkala, Pramada, Mada, Svamiśra, Kālavadana, Karāla, and Keśi as well,
एकाक्षश् चन्द्रमा राहुः संह्रादः सम्बरः स्वनः शतघ्नीचक्रहस्ताश् च तथा मुशलपाणयः
Ekākṣa, Candramā, Rāhu, Saṃhrāda, Sambara, Svanā, those bearing Śataghnī-discuses, and those wielding maces,
अश्वयन्त्रायुधोपेता भिन्दिपालायुधास् तथा शूलोलूखलहस्ताश् च परश्वधधरास् तथा
Equipped with horse-restraining weapons, with slings as weapons, with tridents and mortars in hand, and those bearing axes as well,
पाशमुद्गरहस्ताश् च तथा परिघपाणयः महाशिलाप्रहरणाः शूलहस्ताश् च दानवाः
Those with nooses and clubs in hand, those wielding iron bars, those armed with great stones, and Daityas bearing tridents,
नानाप्रहरणा घोरा नानावेशा महाबलाः कूर्मकुक्कुटवक्त्राश् च शशोलूकमुखास् तथा
Terrifying ones with various weapons, of many forms and great strength, with faces of tortoises and cocks, and also with faces of hares and owls,
खरोष्ट्रवदनाश् चैव वराहवदनास् तथा मार्जारशिखिवक्त्राश् च महावक्त्रास् तथा परे
With faces of donkeys and camels, and also of boars, with faces of cats and peacocks, and others with great jaws,
नक्रमेषाननाः शूरा गोजाविमहिषाननाः गोधाशल्लकिवक्त्राश् च क्रोष्टुवक्त्राश् च दानवाः
Heroes with faces of crocodiles and goats, with faces of cows, elephants, and buffaloes, with faces of iguanas and lizards, and Daityas with faces of jackals,
आखुदर्दुरवक्त्राश् च घोरा वृकमुखास् तथा भीमा मकरवक्त्राश् च क्रौञ्चवक्त्राश् च दानवाः
With faces of mice and frogs, terrifying ones with wolf faces, dreadful ones with faces of makaras, and Daityas with faces of cranes.
अश्वाननाः खरमुखा मयूरवदनास् तथा गजेन्द्रचर्मवसनास् तथा कृष्णाजिनाम्बराः
With faces like horses, mouths like donkeys, faces like peacocks, and clothed in elephant hides, as well as garments of black antelope skin.
चीरसंवृतगात्राश् च तथा नीलकवाससः उष्णीषिणो मुकुटिनस् तथा कुण्डलिनो ऽसुराः
Their bodies wrapped in bark-cloth, wearing blue garments, with turbans and crowns, and earrings—these were the Asuras.
