दिशाभिः प्रदिशाभिश् च नदीभिः सागरैस् तथा नक्षत्रैश् च मुहूर्तैश् च खेचरैश् च महाग्रहैः
With the directions and intermediate directions, with rivers and oceans, with stars and moments, with celestial beings and great planets,
देवर्षिभिस् तपोवृद्धैः सिद्धैर् विद्वद्भिर् एव च राजर्षिभिः पुण्यतमैर् गन्धर्वैर् अप्सरोगणैः
With divine sages accomplished in austerity, with Siddhas and learned ones, with the most virtuous royal sages, with Gandharvas and hosts of Apsarases,
चराचरगुरुः श्रीमान् वृतः सर्वैः सुरैस् तथा ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मविदां श्रेष्ठो दैत्यं वचनम् अब्रवीत्
The glorious preceptor of all moving and unmoving beings, surrounded by all the gods, Brahmā, the foremost knower of Brahman, spoke to the Daitya.
प्रीतो ऽस्मि तव भक्तस्य तपसानेन सुव्रत वरं वरय भद्रं ते यथेष्टं कामम् आप्नुहि
"I am pleased with your devotion and this austerity, O virtuous one. Choose a boon, good fortune to you; obtain whatever desire you wish."
न देवासुरगन्धर्वा न यक्षोरगराक्षसाः ऋषयो वाथ मां शापैः क्रुद्धा लोकपितामह
"Let neither gods, nor Asuras, nor Gandharvas, nor Yakṣas, nor serpents, nor Rākṣasas, nor even sages, O Lord of creatures, curse me in anger."
शपेयुस् तपसा युक्ता वर एष वृतो मया न शस्त्रेण न वास्त्रेण गिरिणा पादपेन वा
"Even if endowed with austerity, let them not curse me; this boon I have chosen. Let me not be slain by weapon, missile, mountain, or tree."
न शुष्केण न चार्द्रेण न चैवोर्ध्वं न चाप्य् अधः पाणिप्रहारेणैकेन सभृत्यबलवाहनम्
"Not by something dry nor by something wet, not from above nor from below, not by a blow of the hand, whether alone or with attendants, army, or vehicles."
यो मां नाशयितुं शक्तः स मे मृत्युर् भविष्यति भवेयम् अहम् एवार्कः सोमो वायुर् हुताशनः
"Whoever is able to destroy me, let him be my death. May I become the sun, the moon, the wind, or the fire-offering."
सलिलं चान्तरिक्षं च आकाशं चैव सर्वशः अहं क्रोधश् च कामश् च वरुणो वासवो यमः धनदश् च धनाध्यक्षो यक्षः किंपुरुषाधिपः
"And water, and the atmosphere, and all of space; may I be anger and desire, Varuṇa, Indra, Yama, the lord of wealth, the treasurer, the Yakṣa, and the lord of Kiṃpuruṣas."
एते दिव्या वरास् तात मया दत्तास् तवाद्भुताः सर्वान् कामान् इमांस् तात प्राप्स्यसि त्वं न संशयः
"These divine and wondrous boons, dear one, I have granted you. You shall obtain all these desires, dear one, without doubt."
एवम् उक्त्वा तु भगवाञ् जगामाशु पितामहः वैराजं ब्रह्मसदनं ब्रह्मर्षिगणसेवितम्
Having thus spoken, the blessed Lord, the Grandfather, swiftly departed to the celestial abode of Virāja, attended by hosts of Brahmarṣis.
ततो देवाश् च नागाश् च गन्धर्वा मुनयस् तथा वरप्रदानं श्रुत्वैव पितामहम् उपस्थिताः
Then the gods, the serpents, the Gandharvas, and the sages, having heard of the granting of the boon, approached the Grandfather.
वरेणानेन भगवन् बाधिष्यति स नो ऽसुरः तत् प्रसीदाशु भगवन् वधो ऽप्य् अस्य विचिन्त्यताम्
O Lord, with this boon that demon will oppress us; therefore, be gracious, O Lord, and quickly consider his destruction.
भगवन् सर्वभूतानां स्वयंभूर् आदिकृत् प्रभुः स्रष्टा च हव्यकव्यानाम् अव्यक्तं प्रकृतिर् ध्रुवम्
O Lord, you are the Self-born, the primeval creator and master of all beings, the maker of offerings to gods and ancestors, the unmanifest, nature itself, and the eternal.
ततो लोकहितं वाक्यं श्रुत्वा देवः प्रजापतिः प्रोवाच भगवान् वाक्यं सर्वदेवगणांस् तथा
Then, having heard these words spoken for the welfare of the worlds, the god Prajāpati addressed all the hosts of gods with these words.
अवश्यं त्रिदशास् तेन प्राप्तव्यं तपसः फलम् तपसो ऽन्ते च भगवान् वधं विष्णुः करिष्यति
Certainly, the gods must receive the fruit of his austerity; but at the end of his penance, Lord Viṣṇu himself will bring about his death.
एतच् छ्रुत्वा सुराः सर्वे वाक्यं पङ्कजजन्मनः स्वानि स्थानानि दिव्यानि जग्मुस् ते वै मुदान्विताः
Hearing these words of the lotus-born one, all the gods, filled with joy, returned to their own divine abodes.
लब्धमात्रे वरे चापि सर्वाः सो ऽबाधत प्रजाः हिरण्यकशिपुर् दैत्यो वरदानेन दर्पितः
As soon as he obtained the boon, that Daitya Hiraṇyakaśipu, made arrogant by the granting of the boon, began to oppress all beings.
आश्रमेषु महाभागान् मुनीन् वै संशितव्रतान् सत्यधर्मरतान् दान्तांस् तदा धर्षितवांस् तथा
He then violated the great and noble sages in their hermitages—those of firm vows, devoted to truth and righteousness, self-controlled.
त्रिदिवस्थांस् तथा देवान् पराजित्य महाबलः त्रैलोक्यं वशम् आनीय स्वर्गे वसति सो ऽसुरः
Having conquered the gods dwelling in heaven with his great might, that Asura brought the three worlds under his control and dwelt in heaven.
यदा वरमदोन्मत्तो विचरन् दानवो भुवि यज्ञीयान् अकरोद् दैत्यान् अयज्ञीयाश् च देवताः
When that Dānava, intoxicated by the boon, roamed the earth, he made the Daityas performers of sacrifice and the gods deprived of sacrifice.
आदित्या वसवः साध्या विश्वे च मरुतस् तथा शरण्यं शरणं विष्णुम् उपतस्थुर् महाबलम्
The Ādityas, Vasus, Sādhyas, Viśvedevas, and Maruts then sought refuge in Viṣṇu, the mighty one, their protector.
देवब्रह्ममयं यज्ञं ब्रह्मदेवं सनातनम् भूतं भव्यं भविष्यं च प्रभुं लोकनमस्कृतम् नारायणं विभुं देवं शरण्यं शरणं गताः
They took refuge in Nārāyaṇa, the all-pervading god, the sacrifice made of gods and Brahman, the eternal one—lord of past, present, and future, honored by the worlds.
त्रायस्व नो ऽद्य देवेश हिरण्यकशिपोर् भयात् त्वं हि नः परमो देवस् त्वं हि नः परमो गुरुः
Protect us today, O Lord of gods, from the fear of Hiraṇyakaśipu; for you are our supreme god, you are indeed our highest teacher.
त्वं हि नः परमो धाता ब्रह्मादीनां सुरोत्तम उत्फुल्लामलपत्त्राक्ष शत्रुपक्षक्षयंकर क्षयाय दितिवंशस्य शरणं त्वं भवस्व नः
You are truly our supreme creator, the best of gods, even among Brahmā and the others; with eyes like fully blossomed, spotless lotus petals, destroyer of enemy hosts—be our refuge for the destruction of the race of Diti.
भयं त्यजध्वम् अमरा अभयं वो ददाम्य् अहम् तथैव त्रिदिवं देवाः प्रतिलप्स्यथ मा चिरम्
Abandon fear, O immortals; I grant you freedom from fear. And soon, O gods, you will regain heaven just as before.
एषो ऽहं सगणं दैत्यं वरदानेन दर्पितम् अवध्यम् अमरेन्द्राणां दानवेन्द्रं निहन्मि तम्
This Daitya, proud from the boon and invincible to the lords of immortals, I shall slay along with his followers—this lord of Dānavas.
एवम् उक्त्वा तु भगवान् विसृज्य त्रिदशेश्वरान् हिरण्यकशिपोः स्थानम् आजगाम महाबलः
Having thus spoken, the Lord dismissed the rulers of the gods and, possessing great might, went to the abode of Hiraṇyakaśipu.
नरस्यार्धतनुं कृत्वा सिंहस्यार्धतनुं प्रभुः नारसिंहेन वपुषा पाणिं संस्पृश्य पाणिना
Assuming a form half-man and half-lion, the Lord, with the body of Narasiṃha, touched him with his hand.
घनजीमूतसंकाशो घनजीमूतनिस्वनः घनजीमूतदीप्तौजा जीमूत इव वेगवान्
He was like a dense thundercloud in appearance, with the roar of a thundercloud, with the radiance of a thundercloud, and swift as a thundercloud.
