He beheld that foot, shaped like a deer’s, and stood firm; then, with that very spear, he struck it, O best of Brahmins.
When he approached, he saw there a man bearing four arms; bowing down, he addressed him again and again, saying, 'Be gracious to me.'
Unknowing, I have done this, mistaking you for a deer; forgive me—do not burn me, already scorched by the sin of my own self.
Then the Blessed Lord said to him, 'There is not the slightest danger for you; go, by my grace, O hunter, attain the lordship of heaven.'
Immediately after those words, a celestial chariot arrived; ascending it, the hunter went to heaven by his grace.
When he had departed, the Blessed Lord, uniting his self with the Supreme Self—Brahman, imperishable, inconceivable, pure, and filled with Vāsudeva—
In the unborn, ageless, indestructible, immeasurable, all-pervading Self, having abandoned the human body, he attained the threefold path.
Arjuna, seeking out the bodies of Krishna and Rama, performed their funeral rites, as well as those of the others, in due order.
The eight queens, led by Rukmiṇī, having embraced Hari’s body, entered the fire.
And Revati, the most virtuous, embracing Rama’s body, entered the blazing fire, cooled by the joy of his companionship.
Hearing of this, Ugrasena, Anakadundubhi, Devakī, and Rohiṇī likewise entered the sacred fire.
Then Arjuna, having performed the funeral rites for them according to rule, departed, taking all the people and Vajra with him.
The wives of Krishna, by the thousands, departed from Dvārakā; Kaunteya, protecting Vajra and the people, went forth slowly.
The Sudharmā assembly hall, which Krishna had brought to the mortal world, O Brahmins, went to heaven, as did the Pārijāta tree.
On the very day when Hari departed, leaving the earth for heaven, on that day, it is said, Kali, the embodiment of Time, descended.
The great ocean flooded that empty Dvārakā, but did not flood the single house of the chief of the Yadus.
Even today, O Brahmins, the great ocean does not cross that place, for the Blessed Keśava is eternally present there.
That place is supremely holy, destroyer of all sins, filled with the play of Viṣṇu; seeing it, one is freed from sin.
Partha dwelt in the land of the Five Rivers, abundant in grain and wealth, O best of sages, together with all the people.
Then greed arose in Partha, the lone archer, upon seeing women being led away by bandits whose leaders had been slain.
Then those evil-doers, their minds overcome by greed, the Abhiras, gathered and conspired together, exceedingly arrogant.
This lone Arjuna, armed with his bow, is leading away the women whose chiefs have been killed, surpassing us; shame, let force be used.
Having slain Bhishma, Drona, Jayadratha, and Karna and others, he is filled with pride, yet he does not know the strength of the villagers.
He scorns all the other men, especially the strongest among the villagers; what use are many words to you?
Then the bandits, wielding clubs and hurling stones, in their thousands, rushed upon those people whose leaders had been slain; then Kaunteya withdrew and spoke to the Abhiras, as if laughing.
Turn back, you who do not know righteousness, if you do not wish to die.
Disregarding his words, they seized the wealth and the women from Kaunteya, who was guarded by Vishvaksena.
Then Arjuna, mighty in battle, tried to string his divine bow Gandiva, ageless in war, but he could not.
With difficulty he made it ready, but again it became slack; Pandava did not recall the weapons, though he pondered.
Partha joyfully released arrows at them, but the rest did not cause any harm; the arrows from Gandiva's bow had no effect.
