देवासुरसमाक्षिप्तः क्षीरोदम् इव मन्दरः मन्दरक्षोभचकिता अमृतोत्पादशङ्किताः
Like Mandara Mountain cast into the Ocean of Milk by gods and demons, they were shaken and fearful, suspecting the birth of nectar.
सहसोत्पतिता भीता भीमं दृष्ट्वा नृपोत्तमम् नता निश्चलमूर्धानो बभूवुस् ते महोरगाः
Suddenly, terrified upon seeing the mighty and supreme king, those great serpents sprang up, bowing their unmoving heads.
सायाह्ने कदलीखण्डाः कम्पिता इव वायुना स वै बद्ध्वा धनुर् ज्याभिर् उत्सिक्तं पञ्चभिः शरैः
In the evening, like plantain trunks shaken by the wind, he strung his bow and with five arrows swiftly shot forth.
लङ्केशं मोहयित्वा तु सबलं रावणं बलात् निर्जित्य वशम् आनीय माहिष्मत्यां बबन्ध तम्
Having bewildered Ravana, lord of Lanka, along with his army, he overpowered and subdued him by force, and bound him in Mahishmati.
श्रुत्वा तु बद्धं पौलस्त्यं रावणं त्व् अर्जुनेन च ततो गत्वा पुलस्त्यस् तम् अर्जुनं ददृशे स्वयम्
Hearing that Ravana, the descendant of Pulastya, had been bound by Arjuna, Pulastya himself went and saw Arjuna.
मुमोच रक्षः पौलस्त्यं पुलस्त्येनाभियाचितः यस्य बाहुसहस्रस्य बभूव ज्यातलस्वनः
At Pulastya's request, he released the demon Ravana, whose thousand arms once resounded with the twang of the bowstring.
युगान्ते तोयदस्येव स्फुटतो ह्य् अशनेर् इव अहो बत मृधे वीर्यं भार्गवस्य यद् अच्छिनत्
At the end of an age, as clouds burst or thunder cracks, so too—how wondrous!—did Bhargava's might sever his strength in battle.
राज्ञो बाहुसहस्रस्य हैमं तालवनं यथा तृषितेन कदाचित् स भिक्षितश् चित्रभानुना
Like a golden palm grove belonging to the king of a thousand arms, he was once begged by Citrabhanu, parched with thirst.
स भिक्षाम् अददाद् वीरः सप्त द्वीपान् विभावसोः पुराणि ग्रामघोषांश् च विषयांश् चैव सर्वशः
That hero gave alms—seven islands, the ancient cities of Agni, villages, hamlets, and all his territories.
जज्वाल तस्य सर्वाणि चित्रभानुर् दिधृक्षया स तस्य पुरुषेन्द्रस्य प्रभावेण महात्मनः
Citrabhanu burned all those, desiring to consume them, but it was by the power of that great-souled lord of men.
ददाह कार्तवीर्यस्य शैलांश् चैष वनानि च स शून्यम् आश्रमं रम्यं वरुणस्यात्मजस्य वै
He burned the mountains and forests of Kartavirya, and the beautiful, deserted hermitage of Varuna's own son.
ददाह बलवद्भीतश् चित्रभानुः स हैहयः यं लेभे वरुणः पुत्रं पुरा भास्वन्तम् उत्तमम्
Citrabhanu, greatly afraid, burned that Haihaya; Varuna had once obtained him as a son, the most radiant.
वसिष्ठं नाम स मुनिः ख्यात आपव इत्य् उत यत्रापवस् तु तं क्रोधाच् छप्तवान् अर्जुनं विभुः
That sage, famed as Vasiṣṭha and called Āpava, in anger pronounced a curse upon Arjuna at that very place.
यस्मान् न वर्जितम् इदं वनं ते मम हैहय तस्मात् ते दुष्करं कर्म कृतम् अन्यो हनिष्यति
Because, O Haihaya, you did not spare this forest of mine, you have performed a terrible deed; another will slay you.
रामो नाम महाबाहुर् जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान् छित्त्वा बाहुसहस्रं ते प्रमथ्य तरसा बली
A mighty-armed Rāma, son of Jamadagni, renowned for his power, will cut off your thousand arms and destroy you with force.
तपस्वी ब्राह्मणस् त्वां तु हनिष्यति स भार्गवः अनष्टद्रव्यता यस्य बभूवामित्रकर्षिणः
A Brahmin ascetic, that Bhārgava, will slay you; whose wealth was never lost, who conquered his foes.
प्रतापेन नरेन्द्रस्य प्रजा धर्मेण रक्षतः प्राप्तस् ततो ऽस्य मृत्युर् वै तस्य शापान् महामुनेः
By the majesty of that king, who protected his people with righteousness, his death then came to him by the curse of that great sage.
वरस् तथैव भो विप्राः स्वयम् एव वृतः पुरा तस्य पुत्रशतं त्व् आसीत् पञ्च शेषा महात्मनः
O Brahmins, in the same way, he once chose a boon for himself; that great soul had a hundred sons, of whom five remained.
कृतास्त्रा बलिनः शूरा धर्मात्मानो यशस्विनः शूरसेनश् च शूरश् च वृषणो मधुपध्वजः
They were skilled in weapons, strong, courageous, righteous, and renowned: Śūrasena, Śūra, Vṛṣaṇa, and Madhupadhvaja.
जयध्वजश् च नाम्नासीद् आवन्त्यो नृपतिर् महान् कार्तवीर्यस्य तनया वीर्यवन्तो महाबलाः
Jayadhvaja was the name of a great king of the Avanti region, a son of Kārtavīrya, powerful and mighty.
जयध्वजस्य पुत्रस् तु तालजङ्घो महाबलः तस्य पुत्रशतं ख्यातास् तालजङ्घा इति स्मृताः
Jayadhvaja's son was Tāla-jaṅgha, of great strength; his hundred sons became famous as the Tāla-jaṅghas.
तेषां कुले मुनिश्रेष्ठा हैहयानां महात्मनाम् वीतिहोत्राः सुजाताश् च भोजाश् चावन्तयः स्मृताः
Among their lineage, O best of sages, were the Haihayas of great soul: Vītihotras, Sujātas, Bhojas, and Avantis are remembered.
तौण्डिकेराश् च विख्यातास् तालजङ्घास् तथैव च भरताश् च सुजाताश् च बहुत्वान् नानुकीर्तिताः
The Tauṇḍikeras are also renowned, as are the Tāla-jaṅghas; likewise, the Bharatas and Sujātas, though many, are not all named.
वृषप्रभृतयो विप्रा यादवाः पुण्यकर्मिणः वृषो वंशधरस् तत्र तस्य पुत्रो ऽभवन् मधुः
Vṛṣa and others, O sages, were virtuous Yādavas; Vṛṣa was the bearer of the lineage, and his son was Madhu.
मधोः पुत्रशतं त्व् आसीद् वृषणस् तस्य वंशकृत् वृषणाद् वृष्णयः सर्वे मधोस् तु माधवाः स्मृताः
Madhu had a hundred sons, and Vṛṣaṇa established the lineage; from Vṛṣaṇa came all the Vṛṣṇis, and from Madhu, those known as Mādhavas.
यादवा यदुनाम्ना ते निरुच्यन्ते च हैहयाः न तस्य वित्तनाशः स्यान् नष्टं प्रति लभेच् च सः
The Yādavas are called by the name of Yadu, and the Haihayas likewise; he would not lose his wealth, and what was lost he would recover.
कार्तवीर्यस्य यो जन्म कथयेद् इह नित्यशः एते ययातिपुत्राणां पञ्च वंशा द्विजोत्तमाः
Whoever narrates the birth of Kārtavīrya here daily, these are the five lineages of Yayāti's sons, O best of twice-born.
कीर्तिता लोकवीराणां ये लोकान् धारयन्ति वै भूतानीव मुनिश्रेष्ठाः पञ्च स्थावरजङ्गमान्
These have been mentioned among the heroes of the world, who sustain the worlds, O best of sages, the five groups of beings, both stationary and moving.
श्रुत्वा पञ्च विसर्गांस् तु राजा धर्मार्थकोविदः वशी भवति पञ्चानाम् आत्मजानां तथेश्वरः
Having heard of the five origins, the king who knows righteousness and wealth becomes master over his five sons and lord as well.
लभेत् पञ्च वरांश् चैव दुर्लभान् इह लौकिकान् आयुः कीर्तिं तथा पुत्रान् ऐश्वर्यं भूतिम् एव च
He attains five rare worldly boons: long life, fame, sons, prosperity, and glory.
