समस्तभूभुजां नाथ उग्रसेनः स तिष्ठतु अद्य निष्कौरवाम् उर्वीं कृत्वा यास्यामि तां पुरीम्
Let Ugrasena, lord of all kings, remain; today, having made the earth free of Kauravas, I will depart for that city.
कर्णं दुर्योधनं द्रोणम् अद्य भीष्मं सबाह्लिकम् दुःशासनादीन् भूरिं च भूरिश्रवसम् एव च
Today I shall slay Karṇa, Duryodhana, Droṇa, Bhīṣma with Bāhlika, Duḥśāsana and others, Bhūri and Bhūriśravas as well.
सोमदत्तं शलं भीमम् अर्जुनं सयुधिष्ठिरम् यमजौ कौरवांश् चान्यान् हन्यां साश्वरथद्विपान्
I shall kill Somadatta, Śala, Bhīma, Arjuna with Yudhiṣṭhira, the sons of Yama, and the other Kauravas, together with their horses, chariots, and elephants.
वीरम् आदाय तं साम्बं सपत्नीकं ततः पुरीम् द्वारकाम् उग्रसेनादीन् गत्वा द्रक्ष्यामि बान्धवान्
Taking that hero Sāmba, together with his wife, I will go to Dvārakā, and there see Ugrasena and the others, my kinsmen.
अथवा कौरवादीनां समस्तैः कुरुभिः सह भारावतरणे शीघ्रं देवराजेन चोदितः
Or else, urged swiftly by the king of the gods, I will, together with all the Kurus and their leaders, lighten the burden of the earth.
भागीरथ्यां क्षिपाम्य् आशु नगरं नागसाह्वयम्
I will quickly cast the city of Hastināpura into the Bhāgīrathī.
इत्य् उक्त्वा क्रोधरक्ताक्षस् तालाङ्को ऽधोमुखं हलम् प्राकारवप्रे विन्यस्य चकर्ष मुशलायुधः
Having spoken thus, his eyes red with anger, bearing the palm insignia, Muśalāyudha placed his ploughshare on the rampart and moat, and began to drag it.
आघूर्णितं तत् सहसा ततो वै हस्तिनापुरम् दृष्ट्वा संक्षुब्धहृदयाश् चुक्रुशुः सर्वकौरवाः
Suddenly, the city of Hastināpura was shaken; seeing this, all the Kauravas, their hearts agitated, cried out.
राम राम महाबाहो क्षम्यतां क्षम्यतां त्वया उपसंह्रियतां कोपः प्रसीद मुशलायुध
O Rāma, Rāma, mighty-armed one, forgive us, forgive us! Restrain your anger, O Muśalāyudha, be gracious!
एष साम्बः सपत्नीकस् तव निर्यातितो बल अविज्ञातप्रभावाणां क्षम्यताम् अपराधिनाम्
Here is Sāmba, together with his wife, released for you, O Bala; forgive the offenders, whose power was unknown.
ततो निर्यातयाम् आसुः साम्बं पत्न्या समन्वितम् निष्क्रम्य स्वपुरीं तूर्णं कौरवा मुनिसत्तमाः
Then, accompanied by his wife, Samba was released; the Kauravas, O best of sages, quickly departed for their own city.
भीष्मद्रोणकृपादीनां प्रणम्य वदतां प्रियम् क्षान्तम् एव मयेत्य् आह बलो बलवतां वरः
Bala, foremost among the strong, bowed to Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and the others, and spoke pleasing words, saying, 'I have forgiven you.'
अद्याप्य् आघूर्णिताकारं लक्ष्यते तत् पुरं द्विजाः एष प्रभावो रामस्य बलशौर्यवतो द्विजाः
Even today, O twice-born, that city appears unsettled; this is the power of Rama, who possesses strength and valor, O twice-born.
ततस् तु कौरवाः साम्बं संपूज्य हलिना सह प्रेषयाम् आसुर् उद्वाहधनभार्यासमन्वितम्
Then the Kauravas, honoring Samba together with Halin, sent him forth, accompanied by his wife, with gifts for the wedding.
शृणुध्वं मुनयः सर्वे बलस्य बलशालिनः कृतं यद् अन्यद् एवाभूत् तद् अपि श्रूयतां द्विजाः
Hear, O sages, all of you, what else was done by Bala, the mighty; let that also be heard, O twice-born.
नरकस्यासुरेन्द्रस्य देवपक्षविरोधिनः सखाभवन् महावीर्यो द्विविदो नाम वानरः
There was a vanara named Dvivida, of great strength, who became the friend of Naraka, the lord of the asuras, hostile to the gods.
वैरानुबन्धं बलवान् स चकार सुरान् प्रति
He, powerful, fostered enmity against the gods.
नरकं हतवान् कृष्णो बलदर्पसमन्वितम् करिष्ये सर्वदेवानां तस्माद् एष प्रतिक्रियाम्
Krishna, endowed with the pride of strength, slew Naraka; therefore, I will act against all the gods in retaliation.
यज्ञविध्वंसनं कुर्वन् मर्त्यलोकक्षयं तथा ततो विध्वंसयाम् आस यज्ञान् अज्ञानमोहितः
Causing the destruction of sacrifices and likewise the ruin of the mortal world, he then began to destroy the sacrifices, deluded by ignorance.
बिभेद साधुमर्यादां क्षयं चक्रे च देहिनाम् ददाह चपलो देशं पुरग्रामान्तराणि च
He broke the boundaries of the virtuous, brought ruin to living beings, and, restless, burned regions and the interiors of cities and villages.
क्वचिच् च पर्वतक्षेपाद् ग्रामादीन् समचूर्णयत् शैलान् उत्पाट्य तोयेषु मुमोचाम्बुनिधौ तथा
Sometimes, by hurling mountains, he crushed villages; he uprooted rocks and cast them into waters and the ocean.
पुनश् चार्णवमध्यस्थः क्षोभयाम् आस सागरम् तेनातिक्षोभितश् चाब्धिर् उद्वेलो जायते द्विजाः
Again, standing in the midst of the ocean, he agitated the sea; thus, O twice-born, the ocean, greatly disturbed, overflowed.
प्लावयंस् तीरजान् ग्रामान् पुरादीन् अतिवेगवान् कामरूपं महारूपं कृत्वा सस्यान्य् अनेकशः
Flooding villages and cities along the shore with great speed, assuming any form at will, he destroyed many crops.
लुठन् भ्रमणसंमर्दैः संचूर्णयति वानरः तेन विप्रकृतं सर्वं जगद् एतद् दुरात्मना
Rolling, wandering, and crushing, the vanara pulverized; thus, this wicked one disrupted the entire world.
निःस्वाध्यायवषट्कारं द्विजाश् चासीत् सुदुःखितम् कदाचिद् रैवतोद्याने पपौ पानं हलायुधः
Without recitation or sacrificial utterance, the twice-born were greatly distressed; once, in the Raivata garden, Halayudha drank wine.
रेवती च महाभागा तथैवान्या वरस्त्रियः उद्गीयमानो विलसल्ललनामौलिमध्यगः
Revatī, greatly fortunate, and other noble women as well, sang, surrounded by playful maidens.
रेमे यदुवरश्रेष्ठः कुबेर इव मन्दरे ततः स वानरो ऽभ्येत्य गृहीत्वा सीरिणो हलम्
The foremost among the Yadus enjoyed himself like Kubera on Mandara; then that vanara approached, seizing the plough of Sīriṇa.
मुशलं च चकारास्य संमुखः स विडम्बनाम् तथैव योषितां तासां जहासाभिमुखं कपिः
He made a mockery, holding the pestle before him; likewise, the monkey laughed facing those women.
पानपूर्णांश् च करकांश् चिक्षेपाहत्य वै तदा ततः कोपपरीतात्मा भर्त्सयाम् आस तं बलम्
He then struck and threw away the goblets filled with drink, and, his mind overtaken by anger, began to rebuke that force.
तथापि तम् अवज्ञाय चक्रे किलकिलाध्वनिम् ततः समुत्थाय बलो जगृहे मुशलं रुषा
Yet, disregarding him, Balo made a clattering sound; then, rising up, he seized the mace in wrath.
