O best of sages, when the power of the Kritya was checked by the discus of Vishnu, then the great army of Kashi and the hosts of Pramathas were also subdued.
All that army, equipped with every weapon and missile, advanced against the discus; but, overwhelmed by the release of weapons and missiles, that force was burned up by its energy.
Having rendered that entire city unsafe, the discus entered Varanasi, filled with countless servants, citizens, horses, elephants, and men.
That city, with all its fortresses and storehouses, dreadful even for the gods to behold, had all its houses, walls, and gateways surrounded by flames.
The discus, ablaze with undiminished wrath and indifferent to trivial obstacles, swiftly consumed that entire city; then, shining with pulsating brilliance, it returned to Vishnu's hand.
O sage, we wish to hear again of the valor and heroism of wise Balabhadra; please explain it to us.
We have heard here of the drawing of the Yamuna and other deeds; O illustrious one, recount what else Balarama accomplished.
O sages, listen to the acts performed by Rama—by Ananta, the immeasurable, the support of the earth.
Samba, the heroic son of Jambavati, forcibly seized Duryodhana's daughter during her svayamvara ceremony.
Then, enraged, the mighty Karna, Duryodhana, and others, along with Bhishma and Drona, bound the defeated Samba in battle.
Upon hearing this, all the Yadavas grew angry with Duryodhana and his companions, and the sages also resolved to undertake a great effort to punish them.
Bala, restraining them, said: 'They will release him at my word; I alone will go to the Kauravas.'
Baladeva then went to the city called Nagasahvaya, staying in the outer gardens and not entering the city itself.
Learning that Bala had arrived, Duryodhana and his companions offered him a cow, water, and other gifts according to custom; then Rama addressed the Kauravas.
Ugrasena commands: Release Samba immediately.
Upon hearing these words, Bhishma, Drona, and the other twice-born, as well as Karna, Duryodhana, and their companions, became angry, O best of Brahmins.
All the kings, including Bahlikas, spoke in anger: 'Considering the Yadu lineage, wielders of the mace, they are not fit to rule.'
'Ho, ho! What is this command issued by Balabhadra? Which Yadava will give orders to the Kurus?'
If Ugrasena gives orders to the Kauravas, then let him be content with umbrellas adorned for kings among the Pandavas.
Go, Balabhadra, and release Samba, who acted wrongly; we will free him, not by your or Ugrasena's command.
The homage paid to us by the Kukuras and Andhakas is not genuine; what is this command from a servant to a master?
You have assumed pride from sharing seats and meals with us; what fault is there in your conduct, which pleases without regard?
The offering you have made to us, O Bala, is indeed worthy of worship, but it is not fitting for our lineage, nor for yours, to accept it out of affection alone.
Having spoken thus, all the Kurus, firm in their resolve, did not release Hari’s son, but entered the assembly hall called Gajasāhvaya.
Then, intoxicated and enraged, Halāyudha rose up, whirling with anger, and struck the earth with his heel.
Thereupon, the mighty one split the earth with the blow of his heel; he then clapped his hands, filling the quarters with sound, and spoke, his eyes blazing red, his face furrowed with frowning brows.
Ah, what great arrogance is this of these wicked, worthless Kauravas! Is their lordship over us truly ordained by time?
Those who do not respect the command of Ugrasena, which is inviolable, let them know that even Indra, lord of Śacī, accepts his order in accordance with dharma.
Ugrasena, the lord of Śacī, always sits upon the noble throne of justice; shame on the satisfaction these men take in a royal seat defiled by the leavings of hundreds of men.
He whose servants’ wives wear the flower clusters of the Pārijāta tree—he too is not their king.
