Go and tell Pauṇḍraka these words of mine: 'I will indeed hurl my own emblem, the discus, at you.'
Once you have conveyed my true message, do what must be done; when I have taken back my emblem, I will come to your city.
Without doubt, I will hurl my discus, my own emblem, at you, just as you have commanded me to come—this is what you are to say.
I will accomplish this for you tomorrow, without delay; having come to you for refuge, O king, I will act so that you will never again have any fear from me.
When the messenger had departed after these words, Hari remembered and mounted Garuḍa, and swiftly went to that city.
Hearing then of Keśava's preparations, the king of Kāśī, with all his army and followers, came to his support.
Then Pauṇḍraka Vāsudeva, with his great army and the forces of the king of Kāśī, advanced to face Keśava.
From a distance, Hari saw him standing on a splendid chariot, holding discus, conch, and mace, and a lotus in his hand.
Hari saw him adorned with a garland, bearing the bow Śārṅga, with a banner fashioned after Garuḍa, and the Śrīvatsa mark on his chest.
Seeing him, wearing a crown and earrings, clad in yellow garments, and with a deep and serious demeanor, Madhusūdana laughed.
And, O twice-born, he fought with great strength, with elephants, horses, and warriors armed with swords, spears, maces, tridents, and bows.
In a moment, with arrows released from Śārṅga blazing like fire, and with blows of the mace and discus, he destroyed that army.
Having brought the army of the king of Kāśī to ruin, Janārdana addressed the foolish Pauṇḍraka, who bore the marks of his own emblems.
What you said through your messenger to me—that I should hurl my emblems—I will now fulfill for you.
Here is the discus hurled, here is the mace cast at you, and let Garuḍa, too, as directed, ascend your banner.
Having spoken thus, he was pierced by the released discus, struck down by the mace, and Garuḍa, too, was shattered by Garuḍa.
Then, as cries of distress arose in the world, the king of Kashi fought with Vasudeva, standing firm to avenge his ally.
Thereupon, with arrows released from the Sharnga bow, he severed that king’s head and cast it into the city of Kashi, causing wonder among the people.
Having slain Paundraka and the king of Kashi along with his followers, Shauri rejoiced, entering Dvaravati like an immortal ascending to heaven.
When the people in the city of the king of Kashi saw that head fallen there, they were utterly astonished and said, 'What is this? By whom was this done?'
Then, when his son learned that he had been slain by Vasudeva, together with the family priest, he began to propitiate Shankara.
Pleased there in the great sacred place Avimukta, Shankara then said to the prince, 'Choose a boon.'
He chose, 'O Lord, by your grace, may a Kritya arise for the destruction of my father’s killer, Krishna, through your favor, O Maheshvara.'
When he said, 'So it shall be,' immediately after the southern fire, a great Kritya arose from his own fire altar.
Then, with a mouth fierce as blazing flames and hair streaming with fire, the enraged Kritya cried, 'Krishna! Krishna!' and set out for Dvaravati.
Seeing her, all the people, beholding her terrible, deformed eyes, went for refuge to Madhusudana, the protector of the worlds.
This fierce Kritya, with hair like blazing fire, was produced by the son of the king of Kashi, having worshipped the Lord with the bull-banner, for the destruction of you, O wielder of the discus. Destroy this terrible Kritya!
Then, as Krishna played, absorbed in sport, he released the discus against her, whose hair was wreathed with fire and who was terrifying with flames pouring forth.
The Sudarshana discus of Vishnu swiftly pursued the Kritya, and then, struck by the discus, that Kritya of Maheshvara was destroyed.
She, swift as the wind, fled rapidly, and the discus pursued her; the Kritya entered Varanasi in haste.
