'Those mortals who remember your battle with me shall be free from fever,' said Hari to him, and departed.
Then Bhagavān, having conquered the five fires and destroyed them, likewise crushed the strength of the Dānavas with ease.
Then, with his entire army, the son of Bali among the Daityas fought, as did Śaṃkara and Kārttikeya, with the valiant Kṛṣṇa.
The battle between Hari and Śaṃkara was exceedingly fierce; all the worlds were shaken, tormented by countless weapons and missiles.
The gods thought, 'Surely, the dissolution of the entire universe has now come,' as that great battle raged on.
With the Jṛmbhaṇa missile, Govinda caused Śaṃkara to yawn; then the Daityas and the Pramathas were subdued on all sides.
Overcome by the Jṛmbhaṇa, Hara sat down upon his chariot; at that moment, he was unable to fight with Kṛṣṇa, whose deeds are effortless.
Garuda, his arms wounded, was afflicted by Pradyumna's weapon; Guha, his power shaken by Kṛṣṇa's roar, withdrew.
With Śaṃkara overcome by yawning, the Daitya army destroyed, Guha defeated, and the Pramatha forces brought to ruin by the wielder of Śārṅga,
Bāṇa, mounting his great chariot yoked with horses harnessed by Nandīśa, came there to fight, together with the forces of Kṛṣṇa and the Kārṣṇis.
The mighty Balabhadra struck the army of Bāṇa in many ways with arrows; Pradyumna, acting righteously, scattered them.
With the tip of his plough he drew them in, and with his mace he struck them down; Bāṇa saw his forces being destroyed by the arrows of the wielder of the discus.
Then, a direct battle took place between Kṛṣṇa and Bāṇa; both, blazing with fury, sought to shatter each other's bodies.
Kṛṣṇa cut down those arrows of Bāṇa with his own shafts; Bāṇa wounded Keśava, and the wielder of the discus pierced Bāṇa.
Thus, Bāṇa and Kṛṣṇa released weapons against each other, desiring victory, each intent on injuring the other, and also hurled iron clubs, O twice-born ones.
As all the weapons and missiles were being destroyed, and Bāṇa was faltering, Hari resolved in his mind to slay Bāṇa.
Then Hari, the enemy of the Daitya armies, whose radiance equaled that of a hundred suns, took up the Sudarśana discus.
As the slayer of Madhu released that discus to destroy Bāṇa, a naked woman, born of Daitya magic, appeared before Hari.
Seeing her standing before him, Hari closed his eyes and released the Sudarśana discus, aiming to cut off the multitude of the enemy's arms.
Then, at the urging of Acyuta, the arms of Bāṇa were swiftly severed one by one, as the demon rapidly hurled weapons and missiles.
When the many arms were severed, that which remained in his hand, Madhusudana, desiring to liberate, recognized for the destruction of Bana.
Then, rising up, Umāpati addressed Govinda with gentle words, seeing the arrow pouring forth streams of blood from the severed arm-stumps.
Krishna, Krishna, Lord of the universe, I know you as the Supreme Person, the highest Lord, the Supreme Self, without beginning or end, the ultimate.
Among gods, animals, and humans, your taking of bodies is but your play; this act of yours is for the destruction of the demons.
Therefore, be gracious; I have granted fearlessness to this Bana, O Lord. You must not make false that word which I have spoken.
He has grown under my protection; he is not at fault toward you, O imperishable one. This demon is one to whom I have given a boon; therefore, I beg your pardon.
Thus addressed, Govinda spoke to the trident-bearer, Umāpati, his face serene, his anger gone toward the demon.
Because Bana has received a boon from you, let him live, O Shankara. Out of respect for your word, I have withdrawn this discus.
What you have granted as fearlessness, that fearlessness has also been granted by me. You should see, O Shankara, that my Self is not different from yours.
I am you, and this world, with gods, demons, and humans, is also us; but people, deluded by ignorance, see us as separate.
