When Indra hurled his thunderbolt, the blessed Hari seized it; he did not release his discus then, and said, 'Stay, stay.'
With his thunderbolt lost, Indra, whose vehicle was wounded by Garuda, was addressed by Satyabhama as he was intent on fleeing.
O Lord of the three worlds, it is not fitting for the husband of Shachi to flee; Shachi will approach you for the enjoyment of the Parijata garland.
What kind of royal status is yours, O god, when you see the radiant Parijata garland, and Shachi comes to you as before, full of affection?
Enough, O Shakra, with your exertion; you should not feel shame. Let this Parijata be taken, and let the gods be free from distress.
Because of pride in her husband and excessive esteem, Shachi did not properly receive me when I entered her house.
Because I am a woman, my mind was not noble; I was intent on praising my own husband. Therefore, O Shakra, I engaged in conflict with you.
Enough of the Parijata, whether taken by another or lost; with beauty and fame, what woman would not be proud?
When this was said, O twice-born, the king of the gods withdrew; and she said to her, 'Enough, O fierce one, friend, with your excessive complaints.'
Nor does shame arise in me from being defeated by him who is the creator, destroyer, and sustainer of all, the one who has the form of the universe.
In whom this entire world exists, without beginning or end, from whom and by whom nothing else will arise; how can shame exist, O goddess, for being defeated by him who is the cause of creation, dissolution, and preservation of all beings?
He whose form is the entire universe, subtle and minute, known by all the Vedas, not known by others; that unborn, uncreated, eternal Lord, who acts for the benefit of the world by his own will—who is capable of conquering him?
Thus praised by the king of the gods, Keśava, the blessed one, smiled deeply and spoke these words, O best of twice-born.
You are the king of the gods, Indra; we are mortals, O Lord of the world. You must forgive this offense committed by me.
Let this Parijata tree be taken to its proper place; I have taken it, O Shakra, for the sake of truthful speech.
Take this thunderbolt; it is to be used by you in sacrifice. It is your own weapon, O Shakra, for tearing apart enemies.
O Lord, why do you bewilder me, saying 'I am mortal'? We know you, O blessed one, as the knower of infinite happiness.
You are who you are, O Lord of the universe; you are established in activity and in rest. You remove the thorn from the world, O slayer of demons.
Let this Pārijāta tree be taken, O Krishna, to the city of Dvāravatī; once you are freed in the mortal world, it will not remain on earth.
Having said 'so be it,' Hari descended to earth, praised by Siddhas, Gandharvas, and sages sent forth by the king of gods.
Krishna swiftly departed, taking the supreme tree; then, blowing his conch, he stood above Dvārakā.
He brought joy to the Brahmins dwelling in Dvārakā, and, descending from Garuda, was accompanied by Satyabhāmā.
He placed the great Pārijāta tree in the courtyard, where all who approached remembered their former lineage.
The fragrance of its flowers spread three yojanas across the earth; thus, all the Yādavas perceived divine, superhuman scents.
They saw Krishna at the tree, showing his face, while attendants brought wealth, elephants, horses, and more.
Krishna also took the women from Naraka's captivity; then, at an auspicious time, Janārdana married them.
Those maidens gathered from Naraka's abode, from all directions, Govinda married all at one time, O best of Brahmins.
He properly took their hands, each in separate bodies according to custom: sixteen thousand and one hundred women.
The blessed Madhusūdana assumed as many forms, and each maiden regarded Madhusūdana as her own.
Govinda performed the marriage with each, thinking 'he has taken my hand'; in their homes, Keśava, creator of the world, dwelled with them, O Brahmins, manifesting his universal form.
