Go quickly and tell Paulomi my words: Satyabhama speaks thus, with words proud from her husband's glory.
If you are your husband's beloved, if you are truly dear to him, then stop my husband from taking the tree.
I know your husband is Śakra, lord of the gods; I know the Pārijāta tree—yet, even so, I will take it from you, O woman.
Thus addressed, the guards went and loudly reported everything as it had happened; then Śacī began to incite her husband, the lord of the gods.
Then, surrounded by the armies of all the gods, Hari was challenged by Indra, O twice-born, to battle for the Pārijāta.
Then the gods, armed with iron clubs, swords, maces, and spears, stood ready, while Śakra, wielder of the thunderbolt, took his position.
Then Govinda, seeing Śakra stationed atop the king of serpents, surrounded by the assembly of gods and ready for battle, prepared himself.
He sounded his conch, filling the directions with its noise, and released a multitude of arrows, numbering in the thousands and tens of thousands.
Then, seeing the quarters and the sky filled with hundreds of arrows, all the gods released their many weapons and missiles.
Each and every weapon and missile launched by the gods, the Lord, slayer of Madhu, effortlessly cut down a thousandfold.
Drawing the noose of the lord of waters, the serpent-seated one shook it and cut it to pieces, as if it were the body of a young serpent.
The staff sent by Yama, broken by the blow of the mace, was cast down to the earth by the blessed son of Devakī.
The mighty Śauri, with his discus, reduced the palanquin of the lord of wealth to atoms, and with a glance, robbed the sun and moon of their brilliance.
Agni was struck hundreds of times by arrows; the Vasus were driven to the directions; the Rudras, their spear-tips cut by the discus, were cast down to earth.
The Sādhyas, Viśvedevas, Maruts, and Gandharvas—all were scattered in the sky like cotton from the silk-cotton tree by the arrows of the wielder of Śārṅga.
And Garuḍa, with his beak, wings, and talons, devoured and struck down the gods and the Dānavas alike, ever the king of birds.
Then Madhusūdana and the lord of the gods showered each other with thousands of arrows, like rainclouds pouring down streams.
In that tumultuous battle, Garuḍa fought with Airāvata, and Janārdana fought with Śakra, as the assembled gods looked on.
When the weapons and missiles were cut down and destroyed, Vāsava quickly seized the thunderbolt, and Kṛṣṇa took up the Sudarśana discus.
Then all the three worlds, with their moving and unmoving beings, cried out in alarm, seeing the lord of the gods and Janārdana, both armed with thunderbolt and discus.
When Indra hurled his thunderbolt, the blessed Hari seized it; he did not release his discus then, and said, 'Stay, stay.'
With his thunderbolt lost, Indra, whose vehicle was wounded by Garuda, was addressed by Satyabhama as he was intent on fleeing.
O Lord of the three worlds, it is not fitting for the husband of Shachi to flee; Shachi will approach you for the enjoyment of the Parijata garland.
What kind of royal status is yours, O god, when you see the radiant Parijata garland, and Shachi comes to you as before, full of affection?
Enough, O Shakra, with your exertion; you should not feel shame. Let this Parijata be taken, and let the gods be free from distress.
Because of pride in her husband and excessive esteem, Shachi did not properly receive me when I entered her house.
Because I am a woman, my mind was not noble; I was intent on praising my own husband. Therefore, O Shakra, I engaged in conflict with you.
Enough of the Parijata, whether taken by another or lost; with beauty and fame, what woman would not be proud?
When this was said, O twice-born, the king of the gods withdrew; and she said to her, 'Enough, O fierce one, friend, with your excessive complaints.'
Nor does shame arise in me from being defeated by him who is the creator, destroyer, and sustainer of all, the one who has the form of the universe.
