Therefore, O Janārdana, I have now come here for this reason; having heard it, you ought to make every effort to remedy it.
This Bhauma, named Naraka, lord of Prāgjyotiṣapura, O subduer of foes, is causing destruction to all beings.
O Janārdana, having slain the gods, siddhas, suras, and kings, that asura confined maidens within his own palace.
He stole the umbrella that sheds water, belonging to Varuṇa, and likewise took the peak of Mandara, the jewel mountain.
That asura took the divine earrings of my mother, which pour forth nectar, and now he desires Airāvata, the elephant, from Aditi.
This is a great outrage, Govinda, as I have told you; whatever must be done here, consider it yourself.
Hearing this, the blessed son of Devakī smiled, took Indra by the hand, and rose from his excellent seat.
Mounting Garuḍa, the sky-roaming one, and placing Satyabhāmā with him, he went to the city of Prāgjyotiṣa.
Indra too, mounting the elephant Airāvata, went to the abode of the gods, his mind at ease, as the people of Dvārakā looked on.
Around this city of Prāgjyotiṣa, for a hundred yojanas, there was a barrier of Bhairava nooses, set up to repel enemy armies.
Hari cut those nooses by hurling the Sudarśana discus; then Mura arose, and Keśava struck him down.
Then Hari burned to ashes, like moths, the seven thousand sons of Mura with the fiery stream of his discus.
Having slain Mura, Hayagrīva, and Pañcajana, O twice-born ones, the wise and swift one advanced toward Prāgjyotiṣapura.
There, Naraka engaged him in battle with a great army, where Govinda, Kṛṣṇa, struck down thousands of Daityas.
As the mighty Naraka rained down showers of weapons and missiles, the wielder of the discus hurled his discus and split the Daitya's weapon in two.
When Naraka was slain, Earth, taking the earrings, approached the Lord of the Universe and spoke these words:
O Lord, when I was lifted up by you in the form of a boar, this son was born from your touch upon me.
This son was given to me by you and has now been struck down by you; take these earrings and protect his lineage.
O Lord, it is indeed You Yourself who has descended into this world with a portion of Your own being, for the purpose of relieving the burden of the earth, O gracious-faced Master.
You are the Creator and the Transformer, the Dissolver, the imperishable Origin; You are the very form of the universe, O unfailing One, who is praised—what need is there for me to praise You?
You are the all-pervading, the pervaded, the agent of action, and the act itself, O Lord; ever the Self of all beings and the Self within the Self, O unfailing One, who is praised—what need is there for me to praise You?
You are the Supreme Self, the individual self, and the Self of all beings, imperishable Lord; at all times, there is no praise apart from You—so for what purpose should praise be offered to You?
Be gracious, O Soul of all beings; whatever was done by Naraka, let that be forgiven. My son, though he has fallen, is not at fault.
Saying, 'So be it,' the Lord, the Creator of beings, then took the jewels from Naraka's abode and gave them to the earth, O best of sages.
In the city of maidens, O best of twice-born, he saw more than a thousand maidens, each possessing the strength of sixteen.
He saw six thousand fierce elephants with four tusks, and likewise twenty-one crores of horses of the Kambojas.
Govinda at once brought those maidens, those elephants, and those horses to the city of Dvaraka, along with Naraka's attendants.
He saw the umbrella of Varuna and the jeweled mountain, and Hari placed them upon Garuda, the lord of birds.
Then Krishna himself, accompanied by Satyabhama, ascended and went to the abode of the gods to give the earrings of Aditi.
Garuda, bearing the umbrella of Varuna, the jeweled mountain, and Hrishikesha with his wife, proceeded effortlessly.
