ततो जहासाथ बलं कलिङ्गाधिपतिर् द्विजाः दन्तान् विदर्शयन् मूढो रुक्मी चाह मदोद्धतः
Then, O twice-born, the king of Kalinga laughed at Bala, showing his teeth, and the arrogant Rukmi spoke, intoxicated with pride.
अविद्यो ऽयं महाद्यूते बलभद्रः पराजितः मृषैवाक्षावलेपत्वाद् यो ऽयं मेने ऽक्षकोविदम्
'This Balabhadra is ignorant in the great game of dice and has been defeated; it is false pride alone that made him think himself skilled at dice.'
दृष्ट्वा कलिङ्गराजं तु प्रकाशदशनाननम् रुक्मिणं चापि दुर्वाक्यं कोपं चक्रे हलायुधः
Seeing the king of Kaliṅga with his teeth bared in a broad grin, and Rukmi uttering harsh words, Baladeva grew angry.
ततः कोपपरीतात्मा निष्ककोटिं हलायुधः ग्लहं जग्राह रुक्मी च ततस् त्व् अक्षान् अपातयत्
Then, his mind overcome by wrath, Baladeva seized the dice without stakes, and Rukmi cast the dice thereafter.
अजयद् बलदेवो ऽथ प्राहोच्चैस् तं जितं मया ममेति रुक्मी प्राहोच्चैर् अलीकोक्तैर् अलं बलम्
Baladeva won, and proclaimed loudly, 'He is defeated by me, he is mine!' But Rukmi loudly replied with deceitful words, 'Enough of your strength!'
त्वयोक्तो ऽयं ग्लहः सत्यं न ममैषो ऽनुमोदितः एवं त्वया चेद् विजितं न मया विजितं कथम्
'This game was declared by you, truly, but I did not consent to it. If you have thus won by your own claim, how is it that I am defeated by you?'
ततो ऽन्तरिक्षे वाग् उच्चैः प्राह गम्भीरनादिनी बलदेवस्य तं कोपं वर्धयन्ती महात्मनः
Then, a voice resounded from the sky, deep and thunderous, increasing the great soul Baladeva's anger.
जितं तु बलदेवेन रुक्मिणा भाषितं मृषा अनुक्त्वा वचनं किंचित् कृतं भवति कर्मणा
'The victory belongs to Baladeva; Rukmi's words are false. Without speaking the truth, how can an act be accomplished?'
ततो बलः समुत्थाय क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः जघानाष्टापदेनैव रुक्मिणं स महाबलः
Then Bala, his eyes reddened with rage, rose up and, with the chessboard itself, struck down Rukmi, that mighty one.
कलिङ्गराजं चादाय विस्फुरन्तं बलाद् बलः बभञ्ज दन्तान् कुपितो यैः प्रकाशं जहास सः
Seizing the king of Kaliṅga, who was trembling, Bala in his fury broke the teeth with which he had openly laughed.
आकृष्य च महास्तम्भं जातरूपमयं बलः जघान ये तत्पक्षास् तान् भूभृतः कुपितो बलः
And pulling up a great golden pillar, Bala, enraged, struck down those kings who were on Rukmi's side.
ततो हाहाकृतं सर्वं पलायनपरं द्विजाः तद् राजमण्डलं सर्वं बभूव कुपिते बले
Then, as Bala raged, all the twice-born and the entire royal assembly were thrown into panic and fled, crying out in distress.
बलेन निहतं श्रुत्वा रुक्मिणं मधुसूदनः नोवाच वचनं किंचिद् रुक्मिणीबलयोर् भयात्
Hearing that Rukmi had been slain by Bala, Madhusūdana spoke not a word, out of fear for Rukmiṇī and Bala.
ततो ऽनिरुद्धम् आदाय कृतोद्वाहं द्विजोत्तमाः द्वारकाम् आजगामाथ यदुचक्रं सकेशवम्
Then, taking Aniruddha, whose wedding had been performed, the best of the twice-born, along with the Yadu clan and Keśava, returned to Dvārakā.
द्वारवत्यां ततः शौरिं शक्रस् त्रिभुवनेश्वरः आजगामाथ मुनयो मत्तैरावतपृष्ठगः
Then, in Dvārakā, Śakra, lord of the three worlds, came to see Śauri, accompanied by sages and riding the intoxicated Airāvata.
प्रविश्य द्वारकां सो ऽथ समीपे च हरेस् तदा कथयाम् आस दैत्यस्य नरकस्य विचेष्टितम्
Entering Dvārakā, he approached Hari and began to recount the deeds of the demon Naraka.
त्वया नाथेन देवानां मनुष्यत्वे ऽपि तिष्ठता प्रशमं सर्वदुःखानि नीतानि मधुसूदन
'By you, lord of the gods, even while dwelling in human form, all sufferings have been brought to an end, O Madhusūdana.'
तपस्विजनरक्षायै सो ऽरिष्टो धेनुकस् तथा प्रलम्बाद्यास् तथा केशी ते सर्वे निहतास् त्वया
'For the protection of ascetics, Ariṣṭa, Dhenuka, Pralamba, Keśī, and others have all been slain by you.'
कंसः कुवलयापीडः पूतना बालघातिनी नाशं नीतास् त्वया सर्वे ये ऽन्ये जगदुपद्रवाः
'Kaṃsa, Kuvalayāpīḍa, Pūtanā the child-killer, and all other disturbers of the world have been destroyed by you.'
युष्मद्दोर्दण्डसंबुद्धिपरित्राते जगत्त्रये यज्ञे यज्ञहविः प्राश्य तृप्तिं यान्ति दिवौकसः
'When, by the power of your arm and wisdom, you rescue the three worlds, the gods, having received their share of the sacrifice, attain satisfaction.'
सो ऽहं सांप्रतम् आयातो यन्निमित्तं जनार्दन तच् छ्रुत्वा तत्प्रतीकारप्रयत्नं कर्तुम् अर्हसि
Therefore, O Janārdana, I have now come here for this reason; having heard it, you ought to make every effort to remedy it.
भौमो ऽयं नरको नाम प्राग्ज्योतिषपुरेश्वरः करोति सर्वभूतानाम् अपघातम् अरिंदम
This Bhauma, named Naraka, lord of Prāgjyotiṣapura, O subduer of foes, is causing destruction to all beings.
देवसिद्धसुरादीनां नृपाणां च जनार्दन हत्वा तु सो ऽसुरः कन्या रुरोध निजमन्दिरे
O Janārdana, having slain the gods, siddhas, suras, and kings, that asura confined maidens within his own palace.
छत्त्रं यत् सलिलस्रावि तज् जहार प्रचेतसः मन्दरस्य तथा शृङ्गं हृतवान् मणिपर्वतम्
He stole the umbrella that sheds water, belonging to Varuṇa, and likewise took the peak of Mandara, the jewel mountain.
अमृतस्राविणी दिव्ये मातुर् मे ऽमृतकुण्डले जहार सो ऽसुरो ऽदित्या वाञ्छत्य् ऐरावतं द्विपम्
That asura took the divine earrings of my mother, which pour forth nectar, and now he desires Airāvata, the elephant, from Aditi.
दुर्नीतम् एतद् गोविन्द मया तस्य तवोदितम् यद् अत्र प्रतिकर्तव्यं तत् स्वयं परिमृश्यताम्
This is a great outrage, Govinda, as I have told you; whatever must be done here, consider it yourself.
इति श्रुत्वा स्मितं कृत्वा भगवान् देवकीसुतः गृहीत्वा वासवं हस्ते समुत्तस्थौ वरासनात्
Hearing this, the blessed son of Devakī smiled, took Indra by the hand, and rose from his excellent seat.
संचिन्तितम् उपारुह्य गरुडं गगनेचरम् सत्यभामां समारोप्य ययौ प्राग्ज्योतिषं पुरम्
Mounting Garuḍa, the sky-roaming one, and placing Satyabhāmā with him, he went to the city of Prāgjyotiṣa.
आरुह्यैरावतं नागं शक्रो ऽपि त्रिदशालयम् ततो जगाम सुमनाः पश्यतां द्वारकौकसाम्
Indra too, mounting the elephant Airāvata, went to the abode of the gods, his mind at ease, as the people of Dvārakā looked on.
प्राग्ज्योतिषपुरस्यास्य समन्ताच् छतयोजनम् आचितं भैरवैः पाशैः परसैन्यनिवारणे
Around this city of Prāgjyotiṣa, for a hundred yojanas, there was a barrier of Bhairava nooses, set up to repel enemy armies.
