तुर्वसोस् तु सुतो वह्निर् गोभानुस् तस्य चात्मजः गोभानोस् तु सुतो राजा ऐशानुर् अपराजितः
Turvasu's son was Vahni; Gobhānu was his son; Gobhānu's son was King Aiśānu, unconquered.
करंधमस् तु ऐशानोर् मरुत्तस् तस्य चात्मजः अन्यस् त्व् आविक्षितो राजा मरुत्तः कथितो मया
Aiśānu's son was Karaṃdhama; Marutta was his son; another king, Āvikṣita, and Marutta have been described by me.
अनपत्यो ऽभवद् राजा यज्वा विपुलदक्षिणः दुहिता संयता नाम तस्यासीत् पृथिवीपतेः
The king became childless, though a performer of sacrifices with abundant gifts; his daughter was named Saṃyatā, ruler of the earth.
दक्षिणार्थं तु सा दत्ता संवर्ताय महात्मने दुष्यन्तं पौरवं चापि लेभे पुत्रम् अकल्मषम्
For the sake of sacrificial gifts, she was given to the great-souled Saṃvarta; she obtained a faultless son, Duṣyanta, of the Paurava line.
एवं ययातिशापेन जरासंक्रमणे तदा पौरवं तुर्वसोर् वंशं प्रविवेश द्विजोत्तमाः
Thus, by the curse of Yayati, at that time, the transmission of old age entered the Paurava and Turvasu lineages, O best of twice-born.
दुष्यन्तस्य तु दायादः करूरोमः प्रजेश्वरः करूरोमाद् अथाह्रीदश् चत्वारस् तस्य चात्मजाः
The heir of Duṣyanta was Karūroma, lord of people; from Karūroma came Ahrīda, and he had four sons.
पाण्ड्यश् च केरलश् चैव कालश् चोलश् च पार्थिवः द्रुह्योश् च तनयो राजन् बभ्रुसेतुश् च पार्थिवः
Pāṇḍya, Kerala, Kāla, and Cola were kings; and the son of Druhyu, O king, was Babhrusetu, also a ruler.
अङ्गारसेतुस् तत्पुत्रो मरुतां पतिर् उच्यते यौवनाश्वेन समरे कृच्छ्रेण निहतो बली
Aṅgārasetu was his son, called the lord of the Maruts; in battle, he was slain with difficulty by Yauvanāśva, though mighty.
युद्धं सुमहद् अप्य् आसीन् मासान् परिचरद् दश अङ्गारसेतोर् दायादो गान्धारो नाम पार्थिवः
A great war took place, lasting ten months; the heir of Aṅgārasetu was a king named Gāndhāra.
ख्यायते यस्य नाम्ना वै गान्धारविषयो महान् गान्धारदेशजाश् चैव तुरगा वाजिनां वराः
By whose name the vast region of Gāndhāra is known; and the horses born in Gāndhāra are renowned as the best among steeds.
अनोस् तु पुत्रो धर्मो ऽभूद् द्यूतस् तस्यात्मजो ऽभवत् द्यूताद् वनदुहो जज्ञे प्रचेतास् तस्य चात्मजः
Ano's son was Dharma; Dyūta was Dharma's son; from Dyūta was born Vanaduha, and Pracetās was his son.
प्रचेतसः सुचेतास् तु कीर्तितास् त्व् अनवो मया बभूवुस् तु यदोः पुत्राः पञ्च देवसुतोपमाः
Pracetasa's son was Sucetā; thus the descendants of Anu are recounted by me; and Yadu had five sons, all comparable to sons of the gods.
सहस्रादः पयोदश् च क्रोष्टा नीलो ऽञ्जिकस् तथा सहस्रादस्य दायादास् त्रयः परमधार्मिकाः
Sahasrāda, Payoda, Kroṣṭā, Nīla, and Añjika likewise; Sahasrāda had three heirs, all supremely righteous.
हैहयश् च हयश् चैव राजा वेणुहयस् तथा हैहयस्याभवत् पुत्रो धर्मनेत्र इति श्रुतः
Haihaya, Haya, and King Veṇuhaya; Haihaya's son was known as Dharmanetra.
धर्मनेत्रस्य कार्तस् तु साहञ्जस् तस्य चात्मजः साहञ्जनी नाम पुरी तेन राज्ञा निवेशिता
Dharmanetra's son was Kārta; Sāhañja was his son; the city named Sāhañjanī was founded by that king.
आसीन् महिष्मतः पुत्रो भद्रश्रेण्यः प्रतापवान् भद्रश्रेण्यस्य दायादो दुर्दमो नाम विश्रुतः
Mahiṣmata's son was Bhadraśreṇya, renowned for his prowess; Bhadraśreṇya's heir was the famous Durdamā.
दुर्दमस्य सुतो धीमान् कनको नाम नामतः कनकस्य तु दायादाश् चत्वारो लोकविश्रुताः
Durdamā's wise son was named Kanaka; Kanaka had four heirs, famed throughout the world.
कृतवीर्यः कृतौजाश् च कृतधन्वा तथैव च कृताग्निस् तु चतुर्थो ऽभूत् कृतवीर्याद् अथार्जुनः
Kṛtavīrya, Kṛtaujā, Kṛtadhanvan, and Kṛtāgni were the four; from Kṛtavīrya came Arjuna.
यो ऽसौ बाहुसहस्रेण सप्तद्वीपेश्वरो ऽभवत् जिगाय पृथिवीम् एको रथेनादित्यवर्चसा
He who, with a thousand arms, became lord of the seven continents; alone, he conquered the earth with a chariot shining like the sun.
स हि वर्षायुतं तप्त्वा तपः परमदुश्चरम् दत्तम् आराधयाम् आस कार्तवीर्यो ऽत्रिसंभवम्
He performed austerity for ten thousand years, a most difficult penance; Kārtavīrya, born of Atri, thus pleased the giver.
तस्मै दत्तो वरान् प्रादाच् चतुरो भूरितेजसः पूर्वं बाहुसहस्रं तु प्रार्थितं सुमहद् वरम्
To him, the giver granted four boons of great brilliance; earlier, the boon of a thousand arms was sought, a most splendid gift.
अधर्मे ऽधीयमानस्य सद्भिस् तत्र निवारणम् उग्रेण पृथिवीं जित्वा धर्मेणैवानुरञ्जनम्
When unrighteousness prevailed, the virtuous restrained it there; having conquered the earth fiercely, he won favor through righteousness.
संग्रामान् सुबहूञ् जित्वा हत्वा चारीन् सहस्रशः संग्रामे वर्तमानस्य वधं चाभ्यधिकाद् रणे
Having conquered many battles and slain thousands of enemies, while still engaged in combat, he faced even greater threats of death on the battlefield.
तस्य बाहुसहस्रं तु युध्यतः किल भो द्विजाः योगाद् योगीश्वरस्येव प्रादुर्भवति मायया
O twice-born ones, as he fought, a thousand arms appeared for him by the power of his yoga, just as they would for the lord of yogis, through his own maya.
तेनेयं पृथिवी सर्वा सप्तद्वीपा सपत्तना ससमुद्रा सनगरा उग्रेण विधिना जिता
By him, this entire earth with its seven continents, cities, oceans, and towns was conquered with fierce might.
तेन सप्तसु द्वीपेषु सप्त यज्ञशतानि च प्राप्तानि विधिना राज्ञा श्रूयन्ते मुनिसत्तमाः
It is said, O best of sages, that by this king, seven hundred sacrifices were duly performed on the seven continents.
सर्वे यज्ञा मुनिश्रेष्ठाः सहस्रशतदक्षिणाः सर्वे काञ्चनयूपाश् च सर्वे काञ्चनवेदयः
All those sacrifices, O foremost of sages, were endowed with hundreds of thousands of gifts, all with golden posts and golden altars.
सर्वे देवैर् मुनिश्रेष्ठा विमानस्थैर् अलंकृतैः गन्धर्वैर् अप्सरोभिश् च नित्यम् एवोपशोभिताः
All were ever adorned, O best of sages, by gods in splendid aerial chariots, together with Gandharvas and Apsarases.
यस्य यज्ञे जगौ गाथां गन्धर्वो नारदस् तथा वरीदासात्मजो विद्वान् महिम्ना तस्य विस्मितः
At his sacrifice, the Gandharva Narada, son of Varida, sang a hymn, astonished by his greatness.
न नूनं कार्तवीर्यस्य गतिं यास्यन्ति पार्थिवाः यज्ञैर् दानैस् तपोभिश् च विक्रमेण श्रुतेन च
Surely, no kings will attain the path of Kartavirya through sacrifices, gifts, austerities, valor, or learning.
