मत्स्यबन्धैश् च मत्स्यो ऽसौ मत्स्यैर् अन्यैः सह द्विजाः घातितो ऽसुरवर्याय शम्बराय निवेदितः
That fish, along with others, was caught by fishermen, killed, and delivered to Shambara, the foremost of asuras.
तस्य मायावती नाम पत्नी सर्वगृहेश्वरी कारयाम् आस सूदानाम् आधिपत्यम् अनिन्दिता
His wife, named Mayavati, mistress of the entire household, blameless, was made chief among the cooks.
दारिते मत्स्यजठरे ददृशे सातिशोभनम् कुमारं मन्मथतरोर् दग्धस्य प्रथमाङ्कुरम्
When the fish's belly was cut open, she saw the boy, exceedingly beautiful, the first sprout of the tree of Kama, which had been burned.
को ऽयं कथम् अयं मत्स्यजठरे समुपागतः इत्य् एवं कौतुकाविष्टां तां तन्वीं प्राह नारदः
Filled with wonder, she thought, 'Who is this, and how has he come into the fish's belly?' At that moment, Narada spoke to that slender woman.
अयं समस्तजगतां सृष्टिसंहारकारिणा शम्बरेण हृतः कृष्णतनयः सूतिकागृहात्
'This is the son of Krishna, taken from the lying-in chamber by Shambara, who creates and destroys all worlds.'
क्षिप्तः समुद्रे मत्स्येन निगीर्णस् ते वशं गतः नररत्नम् इदं सुभ्रु विश्रब्धा परिपालय
'He was cast into the ocean, swallowed by a fish, and has come under your care. O beautiful-browed one, confidently protect this jewel among men.'
नारदेनैवम् उक्ता सा पालयाम् आस तं शिशुम् बाल्याद् एवातिरागेण रूपातिशयमोहिता
Thus addressed by Nārada, she cared for the child, being captivated by his extraordinary beauty from his very childhood.
स यदा यौवनाभोगभूषितो ऽभूद् द्विजोत्तमाः साभिलाषा तदा सा तु बभूव गजगामिनी
O best of twice-born, when he became adorned with the enjoyment of youth, she, filled with desire, moved with the gait of an elephant.
मायावती ददौ चास्मै माया सर्वा महात्मने प्रद्युम्नायात्मभूताय तन्न्यस्तहृदयेक्षणा प्रसज्जन्तीं तु ताम् आह स कार्ष्णिः कमललोचनः
Māyāvatī bestowed upon that great soul Pradyumna, who was her very self, all her magical powers, fixing her heart and gaze upon him; to her, who was thus attached, that lotus-eyed son of Kṛṣṇā spoke:
मातृभावं विहायैव किमर्थं वर्तसे ऽन्यथा
"Having abandoned the feeling of a mother, for what reason do you behave otherwise?"
सा चास्मै कथयाम् आस न पुत्रस् त्वं ममेति वै तनयं त्वाम् अयं विष्णोर् हृतवान् कालशम्बरः
She then told him, "You are not my son; this Kālaśambara took you, the son of Viṣṇu, from me."
क्षिप्तः समुद्रे मत्स्यस्य संप्राप्तो जठरान् मया सा तु रोदिति ते माता कान्ताद्याप्य् अतिवत्सला
"Cast into the ocean, you entered the belly of a fish and were obtained by me; your beautiful and exceedingly affectionate mother still weeps for you."
इत्य् उक्तः शम्बरं युद्धे प्रद्युम्नः स समाह्वयत् क्रोधाकुलीकृतमना युयुधे च महाबलः
Thus addressed, Pradyumna, his mind agitated with anger, challenged Śambara to battle and, being mighty, fought with him.
हत्वा सैन्यम् अशेषं तु तस्य दैत्यस्य माधविः सप्त माया व्यतिक्रम्य मायां संयुयुजे ऽष्टमीम्
Having slain the entire army of that demon, Mādhava's son overcame seven of his magical illusions and engaged with the eighth.
तया जघान तं दैत्यं मायया कालशम्बरम् उत्पत्य च तया सार्धम् आजगाम पितुः पुरम्
With that magic, he slew the demon Kālaśambara, and then, rising up together with her, he went to his father's city.
अन्तःपुरे च पतितं मायावत्या समन्वितम् तं दृष्ट्वा हृष्टसंकल्पा बभूवुः कृष्णयोषितः रुक्मिणी चाब्रवीत् प्रेम्णा आसक्तदृष्टिर् अनिन्दिता
When he entered the inner chambers accompanied by Māyāvatī, the women of Kṛṣṇa, seeing him, became filled with joyful thoughts; and Rukmiṇī, her gaze lovingly fixed, blameless, spoke:
धन्यायाः खल्व् अयं पुत्रो वर्तते नवयौवने अस्मिन् वयसि पुत्रो मे प्रद्युम्नो यदि जीवति
"Blessed indeed is that woman whose son stands in the freshness of youth; if my son Pradyumna lives at this age—"
सभाग्या जननी वत्स त्वया कापि विभूषिता अथवा यादृशः स्नेहो मम यादृग् वपुश् च ते हरेर् अपत्यं सुव्यक्तं भवान् वत्स भविष्यति
"O child, some mother is surely fortunate, adorned by you; or, the affection I feel and your form—surely, you are the offspring of Hari, O child, you will become so."
एतस्मिन्न् अन्तरे प्राप्तः सह कृष्णेन नारदः अन्तःपुरवरां देवीं रुक्मिणीं प्राह हर्षितः
Meanwhile, Nārada arrived with Kṛṣṇa and joyfully spoke to Queen Rukmiṇī, foremost among the ladies of the inner chambers.
एष ते तनयः सुभ्रु हत्वा शम्बरम् आगतः हृतो येनाभवत् पूर्वं पुत्रस् ते सूतिकागृहात्
"O beautiful-browed one, this is your son, having slain Śambara, now returned—he who was formerly taken from your lying-in chamber."
इयं मायावती भार्या तनयस्यास्य ते सती शम्बरस्य न भार्येयं श्रूयताम् अत्र कारणम्
"This Māyāvatī is the chaste wife of your son; she is not Śambara's wife—listen to the reason for this."
मन्मथे तु गते नाशं तदुद्भवपरायणा शम्बरं मोहयाम् आस मायारूपेण रुक्मिणि
"When Kāma was destroyed, she, devoted to his origin, deluded Śambara, O Rukmiṇī, by taking on a magical form."
विवाहाद्युपभोगेषु रूपं मायामयं शुभम् दर्शयाम् आस दैत्यस्य तस्येयं मदिरेक्षणा
"In marriage and enjoyment, she showed the demon her auspicious magical form; this doe-eyed one is she."
कामो ऽवतीर्णः पुत्रस् ते तस्येयं दयिता रतिः विशङ्का नात्र कर्तव्या स्नुषेयं तव शोभना
"Kāma, your son, has descended; this is his beloved Rati. There should be no doubt—this excellent woman is your daughter-in-law."
ततो हर्षसमाविष्टौ रुक्मिणीकेशवौ तदा नगरी च समस्ता सा साधु साध्व् इत्य् अभाषत
Then, Rukmini and Kesava were filled with joy, and the entire city exclaimed, 'Well done! Well done!'
चिरं नष्टेन पुत्रेण संगतां प्रेक्ष्य रुक्मिणीम् अवाप विस्मयं सर्वो द्वारवत्यां जनस् तदा
Seeing Rukmini reunited with her long-lost son, all the people of Dvaravati were struck with wonder.
चारुदेष्णं सुदेष्णं च चारुदेहं च शोभनम् सुषेणं चारुगुप्तं च भद्रचारुं तथापरम्
Rukmini bore sons: Charudesna, Sudesna, Charudeha the splendid, Sushena, Charugupta, and also Bhadracaru.
चारुविन्दं सुचारुं च चारुं च बलिनां वरम् रुक्मिण्य् अजनयत् पुत्रान् कन्यां चारुमतीं तथा
She gave birth to Charuvinda, Sucharu, and Charu, foremost among the strong, and also a daughter named Charumati.
अन्याश् च भार्याः कृष्णस्य बभूवुः सप्त शोभनाः कालिन्दी मित्रविन्दा च सत्या नाग्नजिती तथा
Krishna had other wives as well—seven noble women: Kalindi, Mitravinda, Satya, and Nagnajiti.
देवी जाम्बवती चापि सदा तुष्टा तु रोहिणी मद्रराजसुता चान्या सुशीला शीलमण्डला
The goddess Jambavati, ever-pleased Rohini, the princess of Madra, Sushila, and Shilamandala were also his wives.
