Then, filled with anger, he went to the southern region, desiring a son, and performed austerities that brought fear to the Yadu clan.
Worshipping Mahādeva, he ate only powdered grain; pleased, Hara granted him a boon in the twelfth year.
The lord of the Yavanas honored him, though he had no son; from union with his wife, a son was born to him, shining like a bee.
That lord of the Yavanas, making him king in his own realm, named him Kālayavana, and then went to the forest, his chest hard as a thunderbolt.
Intoxicated with the pride of his strength, he questioned the powerful kings of the earth; Nārada also told him about the Yādavas.
He was surrounded by thousands upon thousands of mlecchas, equipped with elephants, horses, and chariots, and undertook a great endeavor.
With daily marches, his forces advancing through the forests, he set out against the Yādavas; the sages, angered, went to the city of Mathurā.
Kṛṣṇa also considered that the strength of the Yādavas was exhausted; seeing the advance of the Yavana, the king of Magadha would also attack.
The strength of the Magadhan king is diminished, and Kālayavana is powerful; thus, this calamity has come upon the Yadus in twofold measure.
Therefore, I will make a fortress for the Yadus, very difficult to conquer, where even women would fight—how much more so the Vṛṣṇis and Yādavas!
Whether I am intoxicated, distracted, asleep, or away, let the wicked enemies not overpower the Yadus excessively.
Thus reflecting, Govinda requested from the great ocean twelve yojanas of land, and there he built the city of Dvārakā.
It was adorned with great gardens, massive ramparts, and hundreds of ponds, crowded with many walls, like Indra’s Amarāvatī.
Janārdana brought the people of Mathurā to that place; with Kālayavana approaching, he himself went to Mathurā.
When the army was stationed outside Mathurā, Govinda, unarmed, went out; the Yavana saw him.
Recognizing Vāsudeva, that king, armed with his fists, pursued him—yet he, possessed of great yogic mind, cannot be attained.
Followed by him, Krishna also entered the great cave where the mighty king, Mucukunda, lies sleeping.
The Yavana too entered, and seeing a man lying on a bed, struck him with his foot, thinking him to be Krishna, that wicked one.
As soon as he was seen by him, the Yavana blazed with fire born of wrath, and at that very moment, the ascetic was reduced to ashes.
He, having gone to the battle of gods and demons and conquered the great asuras, afflicted by sleep, requested from the gods a boon of sleep for a very long time.
And the gods declared: Whoever awakens you from sleep will instantly be reduced to ashes by fire arising from your body.
Thus, having burned that sinner, and seeing Madhusudana, he asked, 'Who are you?' And he replied, 'I am born in the lineage of the moon.'
I am the son of Vasudeva, descended from the Yadu dynasty. Hearing this, Mucukunda recalled the words of the aged Gargya.
Remembering, he bowed to him, to Hari, the lord of all, and said, 'You are known to me; you are a portion of Vishnu, the supreme lord.'
Long ago, Gargya declared that in the twenty-eighth cycle, at the end of Dvapara, Hari would be born in the Yadu dynasty.
You have arrived; there is no doubt. You act for the benefit of mortals. Indeed, your immense radiance is too great for me to endure.
Indeed, your speech is deeper than the vast ocean. Thus, he spoke, whose feet are delightfully served by you.
In the great battle of gods and demons, the mighty Daityas could not withstand your great radiance; I too cannot bear that radiance.
You are the supreme refuge for the creature fallen in worldly existence. Be gracious, remover of distress for those who seek refuge; dispel my misfortune.
You are the oceans, mountains, rivers, forests, earth, sky, wind, waters, fire, and likewise, the person.
