'By the curse of Yayāti, this dynasty is now unworthy of kingship. While I remain as your servant, let the gods be commanded—what need is there for kings?'
Having spoken thus to Ugrasena, Bhagavān Keśava addressed Vāyu, and in human speech instructed him regarding the task.
Go, Indra, and speak, O Vayu; enough of pride, O Vasava. Let the Sudharma assembly hall be given to Ugrasena.
Krishna says: This matchless gem, the hall called Sudharma, is fit for a king; it is proper that the Yadus should sit in it.
Thus addressed, Vayu went and told everything to the lord of Shachi; and Purandara gave the Sudharma hall to Vayu.
The foremost of the Yadus enjoyed that divine hall brought by Vayu, filled with all jewels, sheltered by Govinda's arms.
The eminent Yadus, who knew all knowledge and were full of omniscience, made known the tradition of teacher and disciple.
Then the two heroes, Baladeva and Janardana, went to Sandipani, the Kashyan, dwelling in Avanti city, for the sake of learning weapons.
Having become his disciples, the two heroes devoted themselves to the duties of students, and displayed proper conduct before all people.
They studied the secret Dhanurveda, with its compendium, for sixty-four days and nights; O twice-born, it was wondrous.
Sandipani, considering their deeds beyond human possibility, deemed the two to be like the moon and the sun.
Having received the entire collection of weapons as soon as it was taught, the two said: Choose what you wish for your teacher's fee.
Seeing their superhuman deeds, the wise one requested his dead son, who was at Prabhasa in the salt ocean.
Then, having received the weapons, the two went to the salt ocean and said to the ocean: Give the teacher's son.
With hands joined in reverence, the ocean spoke to the eminent twice-born: I did not take Sandipani's son.
A demon named Panchajana, in the form of a conch, seized the boy; he is in the water, O slayer of demons.
Thus addressed, Krishna entered the water, slew Panchajana, and took the excellent conch born from his bones.
By whose sound the strength of demons is diminished, the brilliance of the gods increases, and unrighteousness is destroyed.
Filling that Panchajanya, Hari went to the city of Yama, and mighty Baladeva conquered Vaivasvata Yama.
Krishna and Bala, best among the strong, gave the boy, who was in the place of torment and had his former body, to his father.
Then, both Rama and Janardana returned to Mathura, governed by Ugrasena, joyful among men and women.
Kamsa, the mighty son of Jarasandha, married Asti and Prapti, O Brahmins; Hari killed their husbands.
Jarāsandha, the powerful lord of Magadha, surrounded by a mighty retinue, came in anger with his allies to kill them.
Having reached Mathura, the king of Magadha besieged it, accompanied by twenty-three divisions of his army.
Rama and Janardana, with only a small retinue, went out and fought together against his strong warriors.
Then mighty Balarama and Krishna resolved, O best of sages, to obtain the ancient weapons.
Immediately, the discus and bow, inexhaustible quivers with arrows, and the Kaumodaki mace appeared from the sky for the heroes.
The plough of Balabhadra descended from the heavens into his hand, and the desired Sunanda pestle likewise for Bala, O Brahmins.
Then, having defeated the army of the king of Magadha in battle, both heroes, Rama and Janardana, entered the city.
When the wicked Jarasandha was defeated, O best of Brahmins, Krishna did not consider him conquered while he still lived and departed.
