You two heroes of great might, go on foot; I alone will enter with the chariot. It is proper for you not to go to Vasudeva’s house, for on your account, the old man is being cast out by Kamsa.
Having said this, Akrura entered the city of Mathura, while Rama and Krishna entered the royal road.
The two heroes, having arrived, were gazed upon with joyful eyes by women and men, and walked playfully like two young elephants.
As they wandered, they saw a dyer and a costume-maker, and the two asked them for beautiful garments fitting their own forms.
That dyer of Kamsa, struck with astonishment at their graciousness, spoke many harsh words loudly to Rama and Keshava.
Then Krishna, enraged, struck that wicked man with a blow of his palm and made the dyer’s head fall to the ground.
Having slain him, they took the garments, and then Krishna and Rama, clad in yellow and blue robes, joyfully went to the house of the garland-maker.
The garland-maker, with eyes wide in amazement, wondered in his mind: ‘Who are these two, and from where have they come?’
Seeing them wearing yellow and blue garments, exceedingly charming, he thought then: ‘Gods have descended to earth.’
Asked for flowers by those two whose faces bloomed like lotuses, he touched the earth with his hands and bowed his head to the ground.
With faces bright with grace, the Lords came to my house—fortunate am I! I shall worship them, said the garland-maker.
Then, with a delighted face, he charmingly gave them these beautiful flowers as they wished, enchanting them.
Again and again bowing, that foremost garland-maker gave them beautiful, fragrant, and spotless flowers.
Krishna, pleased with the garland-maker, granted him a boon: ‘Good fortune to you! Lakshmi, under my protection, will never abandon you.’
There will be no loss of strength for you, gentle one, nor any loss of wealth, as long as the earth and sun endure, and your lineage continues through sons and grandsons.
After enjoying abundant pleasures, by my grace, at the end you will attain remembrance of me and reach the divine world.
Your mind, blessed one, will remain steadfast in righteousness at all times, and those born in your lineage will have long life.
No affliction or fault will befall those born in your line, O greatly fortunate one, for as long as the sun exists.
Having spoken thus, Krishna, accompanied by Balarama, departed from that house, honored by the garland-maker, O best of sages.
Then, on the royal road, Krishna saw Kubja approaching, carrying vessels of ointment, radiant in the bloom of fresh youth.
Krishna spoke sweetly to her: 'For whom is this ointment being carried by you? Tell me truly, lotus-eyed one.'
She, filled with desire and affection for Hari, replied to Krishna with gentle words, and then looked at Balarama as well.
'Beloved, why do you not know? I am appointed even by Kamsa, renowned for my skill in preparing ointments.'
'No other ointment pleases Kamsa; it is only for his delight. I am indeed the recipient of his great favor and wealth.'
'This is fragrant, fit for kings, lovely one with a charming face. Let this ointment, suited to our bodies, be given to us.'
Hearing this, she respectfully said to Krishna, 'Take it,' and gave ointment suitable for both their bodies.
Their limbs anointed with fragrant ointment, those two best of men shone like a white and a dark cloud, adorned as if with Indra's bow.
Then the heroic Krishna, skilled in the art of lifting the chin, raised her chin with two fingers of his hand.
Then, drawing her with his feet, Keshava made her straight, and thus she attained uprightness, becoming foremost among women.
With playful charm, filled with the weight of love, she seized Govinda by his garment and said, 'Come to my house.'
