He beheld before him a wondrous sight: the Lord, radiant as the blue flax flower, with eyes as wide and gentle as lotus petals. In His four noble arms He held the conch, discus, and mace, and His divine form was adorned with a shining crown and splendid armlets. His limbs were perfect, His countenance auspicious, and He was clad in yellow garments. The sacred mark of Śrīvatsa shone on His chest, and a garland of fresh forest flowers graced His form. Every auspicious mark adorned Him; His body was resplendent with all manner of jewels, anointed with celestial sandalwood paste, and decorated with heavenly garlands. Overwhelmed by this vision, the sage was filled with awe; his hair stood on end, and, overcome with reverence, he prostrated himself fully upon the ground, offering his deepest respects. With a heart overflowing with devotion, the foremost of sages exclaimed, “Today my birth is fulfilled; today my austerities have borne fruit!” Thus, he began to praise the Lord with folded hands: “O Nārāyaṇa, O Hari, O Krishna, bearer of the Śrīvatsa mark! Lord of the universe, seed and abode of all that exists, witness of the worlds—salutations to You! Unmanifest, all-victorious, source of everything, supreme among Purushas, lotus-eyed Govinda, Lord of all worlds—I bow to You. O Hiranyagarbha, Lord of fortune and the lotus, eternal one, support of the earth, steadfast ruler, master of the senses—I bow to You. Without beginning or end, immortal, unconquered, ever-victorious, best among the victorious, undefeated, indivisible, Shri Krishna, abode of all fortune—I bow to You. Creator of rain and righteousness, difficult to cross, firmly established, destroyer of suffering and distress, Hari who lies upon the cosmic waters—I bow to You. O Lord of beings, unmanifest, master and soul of all creatures, undisturbed by the elements, dwelling within all beings, womb and support of all—I bow to You. Sacrifice itself, sacrificer, supporter and giver of fearlessness, womb of sacrifice, golden-limbed, born of Prishni—I bow to You. Knower, sustainer, indweller, destroyer, and creator of the field of existence, sovereign and soul of the field, beyond the field—I bow to You. Abode, dwelling, refuge, bringer, enjoyer, delighter, and renouncer of all qualities—I bow to You. You are Vishnu, you are Hari, wielder of the discus, you are the victorious one, Janardana; you are the elements, the sacred Vaṣaṭ call, the future, the Lord of becoming. You are the creator and supporter of beings, the unmanifest, Bhava, the originator of all; the gods call you the unborn Lord. You are infinite, the knower of deeds, nature itself, Vrishakapi, Rudra—hard to overcome, unfailing, you are the Lord. You are the maker of the universe, the victorious one, Shambhu, of bull form, Shankara, Ushanas, truth, austerity, and the people. You are the conqueror of the universe, the refuge, the protector, the imperishable, Shambhu, self-born, the eldest, the supreme goal. You are the sun, the sacred syllable Om, the life-breath of all, the dispeller of darkness, the rain-giver, renowned, the creator, and Lord of the gods. You are the Rig, Yajur, and Sama Vedas; you are the very self, so regarded; you are fire, wind, water, and earth. You are the creator, the enjoyer, the offerer, the offering, the sacrifice, the Lord, all-pervading, the best, the infallible Lord of the worlds. You see all, you are glorious, subduer of all, destroyer of enemies; you are day and night, and the wise call you the year. You are time itself, its divisions and measures, the moment, the instant, the atom; you are child, old man, male, female, and neuter. You are the source of the universe, the eye, the steadfast one of pure fame; eternal, unconquered, Upendra, supreme. You are the giver of happiness to all the worlds, the limbs of the Veda, imperishable; the knower and arranger of the Veda, composed and serene. You are the ocean in its depths, the sustainer, the wealth; you are the healer, self-controlled, beyond the reach of the senses. You are the leader, the chief, the Suparna, the first-born; the support, the greatest, self-controlled, the unfallen one. You are restraint and discipline, exalted, four-armed; you alone are the inner self of food, called the supreme self. You are the teacher, the greatest teacher, the left, the auspicious; you are the sacred fig tree, the scripture, the manifest one, the lord of creatures. You are golden-naveled, the god, the moon, the lord of creatures; you are of indescribable form, Yama, the slayer of the gods’ enemies. You are Sankarshana, the god, the creator, the eternal; you are Vasudeva, of immeasurable self, free from all qualities. You are the eldest, the most excellent, patient, Madhava; the thousand-headed god, the unmanifest, the thousand-eyed. You are the thousand-footed god, the cosmic form, the lord of the gods; you alone stand again, O god of gods, ten fingers in extent. Whatever has been, that is you, O supreme person, mighty Indra; whatever will be, that you are—you are the Lord, truth, and immortality. From you this world arises; you are the greatest, unsurpassed; you are the superior person, and, O god, you exist in ten forms. You are the universe-being in four parts, with nine parts immortal in heaven; nine parts dwell in the mid-space, eternal and belonging to the person. Two parts are established on earth, and four parts also exist here; from you sacrifices arise, which bring rain to the world. From you the cosmic person Virat was born, who abides in the heart of the world, surpassing all beings in brilliance, fame, and splendor. From you came the food of the gods, clarified butter; from you sprang all cultivated and wild plants, and from you came the cattle, the deer, and all other creatures. Thus, the sage, with heart full of devotion, praised the Lord of all, whose form is the source and support of the universe, and who is worshipped by gods and sages alike.
