Those who remember Purushottama, the Supreme Person, in that sacred land lying between the great banyan tree and the ocean—those who depart from this world at Purushottama—are sure to reach that very exalted realm. They attain the supreme abode there, without any doubt. Thus, O best of sages, I have described to you the eternal world of Vishnu, a realm that bestows boundless joy and grants both the pleasures of this world and final liberation. Hearing this, the sage addressed the Lord of the world: “O Lord, you have described Vishnu’s realm as wondrous beyond measure—ever-blissful, glorious, and granting both enjoyment and liberation. The field called Purushottama, so rare upon this earth, has been praised by you: whoever abandons their body there attains the very same supreme realm as Hari himself. You have thoroughly extolled the greatness of that field, where, by relinquishing one’s mortal form, a person attains Vishnu’s divine world. Indeed, this is the true path to liberation—the abandonment of the body, as you have described it, for the benefit of all who come to Purushottama. There is no doubt. O Lord of the gods, even without strenuous effort, the most virtuous of men, relinquishing their bodies in that field, attain Vishnu’s supreme, disease-free abode. Having heard of the greatness of this field, we are filled with awe, for not even Prayāga, Puṣkara, and other renowned fields and sanctuaries inspire such wonder. O best of gods, you do not praise all the other holy places, rivers, and lakes on earth as much as you exalt this field called Purusha. Now, by your repeated praise, we have understood your intention, O Pitamaha. Because you praise the liberating field named Purushottama so highly, surely there is no other place on earth equal to Purushakhya. O foremost of the wise, you praise it again and again, and truly, truly, O best of sages, what you have declared is correct: there is no field on earth that can match Purushakhya. All the holy places and sacred abodes that exist do not equal even a sixteenth part of the glory of Shri Purushakhya. Just as Vishnu stands supreme among all the worlds, so Purushottama is foremost among all holy places. As Vishnu is the best among the Adityas, so Purushottama is the greatest among all sacred fields. As Soma shines among the stars and the ocean is chief among waters, so too is Purushottama the foremost among all holy places. Like Pavaka among the Vasus and Shankara among the Rudras, so is Purushottama the most eminent among all sacred fields. As the Brahmana is the highest among castes and Garuda among birds, so is Purushottama the foremost among all holy places. Just as Meru is chief among peaks and Himalaya among mountains, so Purushottama stands above all holy places. As Lakshmi is among women and Jahnavi (the Ganga) among rivers, so is Purushottama the foremost among all sacred fields. As Airavata is king among elephants and Bhrigu among great sages, so is Purushottama the most eminent among all holy places. As Skanda is chief among commanders and Kapila among Siddhas, so is Purushottama the greatest among all sacred fields. As Ucchaishravas is the foremost among horses and Ushanas among poets, so is Purushottama the most distinguished among all holy places. As Vyasa is preeminent among sages and Kubera among Yakshas and Rakshasas, so is Purushottama the foremost among all sacred fields. As the mind is chief among the senses and the earth among all beings, so is Purushottama the greatest among holy places. As the Ashvattha is foremost among trees and the wind among things that move, so is Purushottama the best among sacred fields. O twice-born, as the crest-jewel is the foremost among all ornaments, so too is Purushottama the most excellent among all sacred fords. As Citraratha is chief among the Gandharvas and the thunderbolt among weapons, so is Purushottama the most eminent among all sacred fords. As the letter ‘A’ is foremost among all letters and the Gayatri among Vedic meters, so is Purushottama the most distinguished among sacred fords. O best of twice-born, just as the head is supreme among all limbs, so is Purushottama the most excellent among all sacred fords. As Arundhati has attained the highest status among virtuous women, so is Purushottama the best among all sacred fords. As the knowledge of liberation is supreme among all branches of knowledge, so is Purushottama the best among all sacred fords. As the king is foremost among men and Kamadhenu among cows, so is Purushottama the most eminent among all sacred fords. As gold is highest among all gems and Vasuki among serpents, so is Purushottama the most excellent among all sacred fords. As Prahlada is foremost among all Daityas and Rama among wielders of weapons, so is Purushottama the most eminent among all sacred fords. As the makara is chief among aquatic creatures and the lion among beasts, so is Purushottama the most excellent among all sacred fords. As the ocean of milk is the best among seas and the lord among rivers, so is Purushottama the most eminent among all sacred fords. As Varuna is chief among aquatic beings and Yama among controllers, so is Purushottama the most excellent among all sacred fords. As Narada is the foremost among divine sages, so is Purushottama the most eminent among all sacred fords. As gold is the highest among metals and the sacrificial fee among purifications, so is Purushottama the most excellent among all sacred fords. Thus, among all holy places on earth, Purushottama stands supreme, the very crest-jewel of sanctity, granting both worldly joy and the highest liberation to those who seek refuge there.
