Eager to learn, the sages approached the Lord of the world and expressed their deep curiosity. "We wish to hear in detail the power of that god," they said, "especially about Narasimha. Tell us, O Lord, how this mighty god may be pleased, for the benefit of his devotees. Our salutations to you." They implored the great-grandfather to reveal what attainments arise from Narasimha’s grace, hoping for his favor. The Lord responded, addressing the assembled Brahmins. "Hear as I speak of the power of Narasimha, the unconquered and immeasurable one who bestows both enjoyment and liberation. Who can recount all the qualities of him whose form is half lion? Still, I will declare them in brief. Whatever attainments, whether divine or human, are heard of in this world—all are accomplished by his grace, without doubt. In heaven, on earth, in the netherworld, in every direction, in water, cities, and mountains—by the grace of Narasimha, progress is unhindered. There is nothing unattainable for him, in all that moves and does not move. Narasimha is ever compassionate to his devotees." The Lord continued, "I will now declare the procedure by which devotees may please this lion-bodied god. Listen, O best of sages, to the eternal king of rituals and the true nature of Narasimha, which remains unknown even to gods and demons. The foremost practitioner should subsist on barley, wheat, roots, fruits, cakes, gruel, or milk. Clad in bark and loincloth, absorbed in meditation, with controlled senses, he should dwell in a forest, a solitary place, on a mountain, or at the confluence of rivers. On barren ground, in a sacred place, or in a Narasimha hermitage, having established the image or oneself, one should perform worship according to the rule. On the twelfth day of the bright fortnight, having fasted, the practitioner should recite the mantra two hundred thousand times, with mind and senses restrained. Even one afflicted by minor or major sins becomes freed thereby; there is no doubt for the practitioner. Having circumambulated, one should worship Narasimha with auspicious fragrances and incense, bowing the head to the Lord. Jasmine flowers, anointed with camphor and sandalwood, should be placed upon the head of Narasimha; then success is attained. The Blessed Lord is never obstructed in any undertaking; even Brahma, Rudra, and the other gods cannot withstand his radiance. What then of demons, siddhas, gandharvas, humans, vidyādharas, yakṣas, kinnaras, and great serpents? Those other practitioners who recite mantras to destroy the asuras perish upon seeing the brilliance of the sun and fire. If the divine armor is recited once, it protects against all calamities; recited twice, it guards against gods and demons. Gandharvas, kinnaras, yakṣas, vidyādharas, great serpents, spirits, piśācas, rākṣasas, and other adversaries—if the armor is recited three times, it becomes impenetrable by gods and demons, protecting within twelve yojanas. The mighty Narasimha protects. After going to the entrance of the cave and fasting for three nights, one should kindle a fire with palāśa wood and offer palāśa sticks soaked in three kinds of honey to the blessed Fire. The practitioner should make two hundred offerings with the vaṣaṭ formula; then the entrance to the cave appears instantly. The wise one, wearing the armor, enters the opening without fear; as he proceeds, distress and delusion are destroyed. A royal road, broad and adorned with bees, is seen; remembering Narasimha, the twice-born enter Pātāla. Upon arrival, one should recite the immutable essence named Narasimha. Then, thousands of women, playing the vīṇā, come forth before the Brahmins, greet them, and lead the master of practitioners inside. They give him divine elixir to drink; upon drinking it, a divine body arises, endowed with great strength. He plays with the maidens until the dissolution of creation; his separate body merges into Vāsudeva—there is no doubt. When the dwelling no longer pleases, he departs, taking with him cloth, spear, sword, rocanā, and a jewel. He also takes the essence, the elixir, sandals, collyrium, black antelope skin, and a delightful pill. The accomplished master, taking the water pot, rosary, staff, reviving herb, perfected knowledge, and scriptures, if he places in his heart even once the three-pointed mantra surrounded by blazing sparks of fire, all sin accumulated over millions of births is burned away. If poison is placed upon poison, it destroys it; it destroys leprosy present in the body; and even after committing acts like abortion on oneself, one is purified by the divine practice. When seized by great malefic planets, one should contemplate the blazing mantra at the end of the heart; then, those fierce planets are quickly destroyed. Tied around the necks of children, it always acts as protection, destroying swelling, tumors, and boils. When disease arises, one should perform oblations with sacred sticks and clarified butter mixed with milk at the three junctions of the day for one month; it destroys all diseases. Thus, the Lord revealed the immense power and grace of Narasimha, and the means by which devotees may attain his favor and protection, fulfilling the sages’ deep longing for knowledge.
