At the sacred place known as Viraja, the mothers of the worlds themselves reside—divine goddesses who dispel all sins, bestow boons, and are ever fond of devotion. Flowing through this holy realm is the river Vaitarani, renowned for its power to wash away all sins; by bathing in her waters, one is freed from every transgression. There, too, abides the self-born Lord Hari, manifest in the form of a mighty boar. Those who behold him and bow before him with devotion are granted the highest state—union with the supreme Vishnu. Within Viraja are eight sacred fords: Kapila, Gograha, Soma, the ford called Alabu, Mrityunjaya, Krodhatirtha, Vasuki, and Siddhakeshvara. Whoever, with self-control and determination, visits these eight holy places, bathes in accordance with the prescribed rites, and offers reverence to the deities is cleansed of all sins. Such a soul, ascending a radiant celestial chariot and praised by the Gandharvas, is honored in the divine realm. If one offers the ancestral cake at Viraja, which is my own sacred field, the ancestors receive inexhaustible satisfaction—there can be no doubt. And those who, at Viraja, relinquish their mortal bodies truly attain liberation. O best of sages, any mortal who, after bathing in the ocean, beholds Kapila and Hari, and has the vision of the goddess Varahi, attains the very abode of the gods. Many other sacred fords and holy shrines are found there; at the proper time, O sage, these should be known and honored as well. On the northern shore of the ocean, in that land, lies a secret and supreme field—most rare, bestowing liberation and destroying all sin. This field, ten yojanas wide, is covered everywhere with pure, glistening sand and fulfills every desire. The land is adorned with groves of ashoka, arjuna, punnaga, bakula, sal, sarala, jackfruit, coconut, shala, palmyra, and kapittha trees. There are also champaka, karnikara, mango, bilva, patala, kadamba, kovidara, lakucha, and nagakesara trees; prachinamalaka, lodhra, orange, dhava, khadira, sarja, bhurja, ashvakarna, tamala, and devadaru; and mandara, parijata, banyan, aguru, sandalwood, date, amrataka, siddha, mucukunda, and kimshuka trees. The asvattha, saptaparni, madhudhara, shubhanjana, shimshapa, amalaka, nipa, nimba, tinduka, and vibhitaka trees also flourish there. This wondrous land abounds with fruits and fragrances of every season, radiant with flowers in perpetual bloom, pure and delightful to the mind, and alive with the melodious calls of many birds. The air is filled with sweet, enchanting sounds—birds strong and intoxicated with joy sing pleasing melodies, their voices charming to the heart. Chakoras, lotuses, bhringarajas, parrots, cuckoos, kalavinkas, haritas, jivajivakas, priyaputras, chatakas, and many others fill the groves, their sweet songs a delight to the ear and soul. The land is further graced by groves of ketaki, atimukta entwined with kubjaka, garlands of malati and kunda, and white and multicolored karavira. Jambira, karuna, ankola, pomegranate, bijapura, matulunga, areca nut, hintala, and banana groves flourish, alongside countless other trees, charming flowers, lush vines, and various thickets and sparkling bodies of water. Long ponds, tanks, lotus pools, wells, and sacred waters, all adorned with clusters of lotuses, are scattered throughout. Beautiful lakes of crystal-clear water shimmer, adorned with kumuda, lotuses, and splendid blue water-lilies. The surroundings are further beautified by kahla flowers, kadamba trees, and the presence of chakravaka birds and waterfowl. Karandava ducks, swimming birds, swans, turtles, fish, and madgu birds fill the waters, alongside dātyūha cranes, sarasa birds, koyaṣṭi, and baka birds. Countless other birds sing all around, dwelling in the water and on land, accompanied by aquatic creatures and water-born flowers. Thus, this sacred field is adorned with every kind of tree and flower, both land and aquatic, and is inhabited by brahmacharis, householders, forest-dwellers, and mendicants. People devoted to their duties, of all castes and walks of life, fill this land with joy and health, men and women alike. This is the abode of all knowledge, the repository of all virtues and dharmas, endowed with every quality and supremely rare. Here reside the foremost sages and the renowned Supreme Person, as long as the boundaries of Utkala are described. By Krishna’s grace, this land is most holy, for here abides the Soul of the Universe, the Supreme Person. The Lord of the Universe, who pervades all, is established in this field, accompanied by myself, Rudra, Shakra, and the gods led by Agni. We, the foremost sages, ever dwell in this land, along with Gandharvas, Apsaras, ancestors, gods, and humans. Yakshas, Vidyadharas, Siddhas, sages of strict vows, rishis, Valakhilyas, Kashyapa and other lords of progeny are present, as are Suparnas, Kinnaras, Nagas, and other celestial beings, together with the four Vedas and various scriptures. Histories, Puranas, sacrifices with generous gifts, sacred rivers, holy places, and shrines—all are found here. Even the seas and mountains are established in this land. Thus, this most holy field is ever served and honored by gods, sages, and ancestors.
