O noble one, hear now the true nature of purity and pilgrimage. A mind that is corrupted within cannot be cleansed merely by bathing at sacred tīrthas, even if one washes oneself hundreds of times in their holy waters—just as a vessel tainted by wine remains impure though bathed repeatedly. Neither the sanctity of tīrthas, nor the merit of gifts, nor the discipline of vows, nor the austerity of hermitages can purify one whose heart harbors wicked intent, whose tongue delights in deceit, and whose senses run wild and uncontrolled. Know this: wherever a person dwells, if he has mastered his senses, there, in truth, lie the holy realms of Kurukṣetra, Prayāga, and Puṣkara. Therefore, O best of sages, listen as I recount to you, briefly and faithfully, the tīrthas and sacred places upon the earth, for even in a hundred years, their full glory—beginning with Puṣkara and Naimiṣāraṇya—cannot be described in detail. I will speak of Prayāga, Dharmāraṇya, Dhenuka, Campakāraṇya, and Saindhavāraṇya; of the sacred forests Magadhāraṇya and Daṇḍakāraṇya; of Gayā, the illustrious Prabhāsa, and the divine Kanakhala. Hear, too, of Bhṛgutuṅga, Hiraṇyākṣa, Bhīmāraṇya, Kuśasthalī, Lohākula, Sakedāra, and Mandarāraṇya. There is Mahābala, Koṭitīrtha which cleanses all sins, Rūpatīrtha, Śūkarava, and the meritorious Cakratīrtha. Remember Yogatīrtha, Somatīrtha, Sāhoṭaka, Kokāmukha, and the sacred Badarī mountain. Reflect on Somatīrtha again, Tuṅgakūṭa, Skandāśrama, Koṭitīrtha, Agnipada, and Pañcaśikha. Let your mind dwell on Dharmodbhava, Koṭitīrtha, Bādhapramocana, Gaṅgādvāra, Pañcakūṭa, and Madhyakesara. Recall Cakraprabha, Mataṅga, Kruśadaṇḍa, Damṣṭrākuṇḍa, Viṣṇutīrtha, and Sārvakāmika. There is Matsyatila, splendid Badarī, Brahmakuṇḍa, Vahnikuṇḍa, and Satyapada. Contemplate Catuḥsrota, Catuḥśṛṅga mountain with its twelve streams, Mānasā, Sthūlaśṛṅga, Sthūladaṇḍa, and Urvaśī. There are Lokapāla, Manuvara, Somāhva mountain, Sadāprabha, Merukuṇḍa, and the holy Somābhiṣecana. Visit Mahāsrota, Koṭaraka, Pañcadhāra, Tridhāraka, Saptadhāra, Ekadhāra, and Cāmarakaṇṭaka. Śālagrāma, Cakratīrtha, the unsurpassed Koṭidruma, Bilvaprabha, Devahrada, and Viṣṇuhrada are also renowned. Śaṅkhaprabha, Devakuṇḍa, Vajrāyudha, Agniprabha, Puṃnāga, and Devaprabha shine with divine merit. Vidyādhara, with Gandharvas, Brahmā's lake, Sātīrtha, Lokapāla, and Maṇipuragiri are sacred abodes. Remember Pañcahrada, Piṇḍāraka, Malavya, Goprabhāva, Govara, and Vaṭamūlaka. Snānadaṇḍa, Prayāga, the secret Viṣṇupada, Kanyāśrama, Vāyukuṇḍa, and Jambūmārga are holy as well. Gabhasti Tirtha, Yayati Patana, Shuci, Koti Tirtha, Bhadravata, and the great forest of Mahakala are sanctified grounds. There is another Narmada Tirtha, Tirtha Vajra, Arbuda, Pingutirtha, Savashishtha, and Prithasangama. Daurvasika, auspicious Pinjaraka, Rishi Tirtha, Brahmatunga, Vasu Tirtha, and Kumarika are also revered. Shakra Tirtha, Panchanada, Renuka Tirtha, the pure ancestral Tirtha, and Rudrapada are places of power. Manimatta, Kamakhya, Krishna Tirtha, Kushavila, Yajana, and Brahmavaluka are holy. Pushpanyasa, Pundarika, Manipura, the northern region, Dirghasattra, Hayapada, and Anashana are esteemed. The sources of the Ganga, Shiva, and Narmada, along with Vastrapada, Daruvala, and Chhayarohana, are sacred origins. Siddheshvara, Mitravala, Kalikashrama, Vatavata, Bhadravata, Kaushambi, and Divakara are sanctuaries of merit. Pundarika, Soma Tirtha, Munjavaṭa, Badarivana, Asina, and Ratnamulaka are sanctified. Lokadvāra, Panchatirtha, Kapila Tirtha, Surya Tirtha, Shankhini, and the abode of cows are holy grounds. The Tirtha of the Yaksha king, Brahmavarta, Sutitirtha, Kameshvara, Matritirtha, and Shitavana Tirtha are remembered with reverence. Snanalomapaha, Masasamsaraka, Dashashvamedha, Kedara, and Brahmodumbara are celebrated. Saptarshi Kunda, the goddess’s Tirtha, Sujambuka, Itaspada, Kotikuta, Kimdana, and Kimjapa are sacred. Karandava, Avedhya, another Trivishtapa, Panishata, Mishraka, Madhuvata, and Manojava are to be honored. Kaushiki, the divine Tirtha of liberation from debts, Nrigadhuma, and Vishnupada are all sanctified by the gods. Thus, O sage, have I briefly spoken of the tīrthas and holy places upon the earth. Their full glory is endless, but know that the true tīrtha is found within, wherever the mind is pure and the senses are mastered.
