चन्द्रमण्डलभूतानां भवभूतिपवित्रिता
Of those who are like the orb of the moon, purified by the essence of existence—
एवं स्नात्वा समभ्यर्च्य भास्करं भुवनाधिप
Having thus bathed, and having worshipped Bhāskara, the lord of the worlds—
देव सेनापते स्कन्द कार्त्तिकेय भवोद्भव
O commander of the gods, Skanda, Kārttikeya, born of Bhava—
एभिर्न्नामपदैः पूज्य नैवेद्यं विनिवेदयेत् ।।4.42.१
With these names and words, one should worship and offer the consecrated food.
पार्श्वस्थौ पूजयेच्छागकुक्कुटौ स्वामिवल्लभौ
He should worship at the sides a goat and a rooster, both dear to the Lord.
कृत्तिकाकटकं पार्श्वे संपूज्य स्कन्दवल्लभम्
He should also worship at the side the Krittika constellation and the sign of Cancer, beloved of Skanda.
एवं निर्वर्त्य विधिवत्फलमेवं युधिष्ठिर
Thus, having performed the rite properly in this way, O Yudhishthira, the result is as follows.
नालिकेरं मातुलुंगं नारिंगं पनसं तथा
A coconut, citron, lime, and jackfruit likewise—
श्रीफलामलकं तद्वत्त्रपुसं कदलीफलम् अलाभे कलकालौघफलमद्यादतंद्रितः
A wood-apple, amalaki, and similarly jujube and plantain fruit; if unavailable, he should promptly offer whatever seasonal fruit there is.
प्रत्यक्षो हेमघटितश्छागो वा कुक्कुटोऽथवा
A goat or rooster, either real or fashioned from gold, should be presented.
सेनायां स च संभूतः क्रौञ्चारिः षण्मुखो गुहः
In the army, he who is born as the enemy of the crane, six-faced Guha—
छागप्रियश्शक्तिधरो द्वारो द्वादशमः स्मृतः
He who delights in goats, who bears the spear, is remembered as the twelfth guardian.
ब्राह्मणान्भोजयित्वादौ पश्चाद्भुञ्जीत वाग्यतः
After first feeding the Brahmins, he should then eat himself, observing restraint in speech.
कार्त्तिकेयं समभ्यर्च्य वासोभिर्भूषणैः सह 4.42.
Having worshipped Karttikeya with garments and ornaments—
संवत्सरविधिं कृत्वा जपं होमपुरस्कृतम्
Having performed the annual rite, with recitation and offerings as prescribed—
एते विप्राः स्मृता दिव्या भौमास्त्वन्ये द्विजातयः
These Brahmins are considered divine; the others, born on earth, are also twice-born.
एवं यः कुरुते भक्त्या नरो योषिदथापि वा
Thus, whoever performs this with devotion, whether man or woman—
सदैव पूजनीयस्तु कार्तिकेयो महीपते
Karttikeya should always be worshipped, O king.
संग्रामं गच्छमानो यः पूजयेत्कृत्तिकासुतम्
Whoever, about to go to battle, worships the son of Krittika—
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन पूजयेच्छंकरात्मजम्
Therefore, with every effort, one should worship the son of Shankara.
यस्तु षष्ठ्यां नरो नक्तं कुर्याद्भारतसत्तम
But he who, on the sixth day, observes a fast at night, O best of Bharatas—
श्रुत्वैवं दक्षिणां मासं गत्वा श्रद्धासमन्वितः। पूजयेद् देवदेवेशं स गत्वा शिवमंदिरम्
Having heard thus, and gone through the southern month with faith, he should worship the Lord of gods, having gone to Shiva's temple.
स्कन्दं गुहं शरवणोद्भवमादिदेवं शम्भोः सुतं सदयितं गिरिराजपुत्र्याः
Skanda, Guha, born from the reeds, the primordial god, beloved son of Shiva and cherished by the daughter of the mountain.
विजयसप्तमीव्रतवर्णनम् किंफला नियमः कश्चिद्वद देवकिनन्दन

मौक्तिकैः पद्मरागैश्च नीलैः कर्केतनैस्तथा
With pearls, rubies, blue sapphires, and also karketana stones,
