Through sacrifices involving soma offerings, the establishment of oblations, the enumeration of cooking, and other rites,
Thus, by those who were devoted to righteousness, whose minds delighted in the teachings of the Veda,
From the play of Lakṣmī arose pride among the gods.
Abandoning those gods who lacked truth and purity, who were fickle,
By those whose bodies were endowed with Lakṣmī, whose minds became even more arrogant,
"We are the Vedas, we are the sacrifices, we are knowledge, we are the world,"
Recognizing those best among the Dānavas, deluded by pride,
With Lakṣmī, who had gone to the midst of the ocean of milk, whose store of wealth was depleted,
Thinking himself bereft of fortune, the slayer of Śambara,
By whom Lakṣmī is attained, once obtained, she does not depart again.
She should not be regarded as wealth; she is a maiden to be protected in the house.
Hearing these words of Śakra, Bṛhaspati, of noble mind,
That supreme vow among vows, which was formerly spoken by someone,
Hearing that, the lord of the gods, along with the gods, began to perform it.
By Viṣṇu, the mighty lord, together with the Siddhas of renowned deeds,
By some with a sāttvic disposition, and by others with a rājasic nature as well.
When the vow was nearly complete, with utmost resolve, O Lord,
By the strength of their arms, they churned the ocean, lord of rivers.
Thus, having made this agreement, they churned Varuṇa’s abode.
From the water being churned arose the moon, radiant and cool-rayed.
All the foremost among Daityas and Dānavas gazed upon her.
The vow was performed by Viṣṇu according to ordinance, and from that the ocean-born appeared.
Moreover, this was done by Indra with royal assembly-like conduct.
The Daityas and Dānavas, their minds covered by darkness, also performed it.
Thus, with fortune, it became an event for gods, asuras, and humans.
O best of the Yadus, tell what is begun and accomplished in its entirety.
One should quickly establish the rule of fasting with a friendly heart.
Whether made of gold, silver, copper, or clay, or even of wood,
With a lotus in hand, lotus-hued, Lakṣmī, with lotus-like eyes.
Then, when three watches of the night have passed, either at the river or at home,
