Whoever listens to this daily, or recites it with devotion,
Whoever draws serpents, men, or those of dark complexion with various colors,
To him, satisfaction comes from the serpents, including Takshaka and others.
Therefore, with all effort, the wise should worship the serpents.
Having made serpents from kusa grass, one should worship them together with Indrani.
With wheat, milk, boiled foods, and various kinds of offerings likewise,
He should worship, O tiger among Kurus; to him, Shesha and others, O king, grant peace, and he attains the world of tranquility, rejoicing for eternal years.
Thus has been described, O hero, the excellent vow of Panchami.
(Om kurukulle hum phat svaha) Those who worship serpents with devotion and offerings of flowers on the hundred Panchamis,
Description of the Panchami vow: By charity, by austerity, by vow, or by discipline,
By recitation, oblation, salutations, or by various rites,
It was given to Vasudeva by the sage for the growth of mankind.
Vasudeva, having received her, whose breasts were full and high,
Whose radiance illuminated the directions, like the brilliance of the sun itself, enjoyed her, O king, with a mind wandering in delight.
She worshipped Vishnu, the conqueror of the world, the lord of the three worlds.
The whole world became joyful and nourished by her.
There was well-being, abundance, health, no lamentation, and no distress.
In heaven, the gods rejoiced, and the danavas and daityas departed.
In the heart, by the brāhmaṇas, and in the fire, the offering is consumed by the dwellers of heaven.
When this was seen by Virocana and the foremost among the Daityas,
Through sacrifices involving soma offerings, the establishment of oblations, the enumeration of cooking, and other rites,
Thus, by those who were devoted to righteousness, whose minds delighted in the teachings of the Veda,
From the play of Lakṣmī arose pride among the gods.
Abandoning those gods who lacked truth and purity, who were fickle,
By those whose bodies were endowed with Lakṣmī, whose minds became even more arrogant,
"We are the Vedas, we are the sacrifices, we are knowledge, we are the world,"
Recognizing those best among the Dānavas, deluded by pride,
With Lakṣmī, who had gone to the midst of the ocean of milk, whose store of wealth was depleted,
Thinking himself bereft of fortune, the slayer of Śambara,
By whom Lakṣmī is attained, once obtained, she does not depart again.
